dragonczar, I disagree.
China needs to show tolerance. The Uighur population is one of the many minority groups of China and they must be treated with respect. Any harsh crackdown resembling martial law will be met by mass unrest, to include hit and run attacks, IED roadside bombs, kidnappings, torture, and terrorist bombings, as experienced by the US in Iraq during the past 6 years.

China needs to tread lightly. If they deem it necessary to crack down with brutal force, it will only sow the seeds for deeper bitterness and unrest which could last for decades, if not centuries.
The US has plenty of experience in this regard, most recently with the invasion and brutal military occupation of Iraq over the past 6 years. Hundreds of thousands of civilians killed, wounded, maimed and tortured, with the end result being that almost every Iraqi civilian is now hostile towards the US.

If Japan wins the 2016 Olympic bid, it should be hoped that the nation also improves the quality of it's athletes.
During the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Japan trailed in the medal count badly, placing 11th in the overall, behind regional rivals China and South Korea, and 8th in the gold count, again, behind China and South Korea.
One would think a rich nation of 127 million with the 2nd largest GDP in the world in 2008 would perform better.

With such a drop in exports, Japan is on target to lose it's status as 2nd largest economy in the world to China, sometime this year or next, according to Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry.
http://www.terradaily.com/reports/Japanshouldpositionselfasglobaltroubleshootergovt_999.html
Tokyo (AFP) June 19, 2009 With China likely to soon overtake Japan as the world's number two economy, Tokyo should follow a new growth path as a "trouble shooter" on climate and other global issues, a government report said Friday.
"The Japanese economy's share in the world has been declining... Japan's status as 'the world's second largest economy' is drawing to an end," the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry admitted in an annual report."
"The International Monetary Fund has predicted China's gross domestic product will exceed Japan in 2010, it noted, saying its Asian neighbour could even take second spot this year if it achieves high growth and Japan stays in recession."
"Japan for the first time finds itself in the position of being caught up with and surpassed," the report said, noting that since opening up 150 years ago, and again after World War II, it had sought to match up to the West."
I agree with this article in that Japan should assume the role as global troubleshooter, in such fields as global warming. A drop in exports in such an export dependent economy that Japan has, along with an aging population consuming less, means Japan will have to scramble fast to find some area of leadership. Climate issues is one area where Japan can excel in.

So, when will Japan branch out with other fellow 2nd tier space powers? You know, the ones without manned space programs of their own.

yeah nigel, I think you are right. Japan would rather not attempt to send an astronaut to space for fear of having to self detonate their rocket, just like they did in 2003, one month after China successfully sent, and retrieved, their astronaut from space.
Gotta love Japan's cowardness.

So, when will Japan make the jump by sending one of their astronauts to space independently?
After all, Japan wants to land a man on the moon so it's pretty obvious that they need to have a true manned space program first.

If North Korea was not the buffer state that it is, China should have long ago pressed these nut-cases to at least revamp their economic model from being state planned to a partial market based one.
Since this has not been done, NK is the basket case of the world, and a continuous thorn in the US and Japan's side.

Ossan,
I agree with your 'forced growth' comment. As for the other comment:
'Of course in a country where you can run over the angry people with tanks maybe that doesn't mean very much.'
Are you also referring to the United States's horrendous killing and torture in Iraq and Afghanistan?

'The number of Iraqis killed through 2007 ranges from "a conservative cautious minimum" of more than 85,000 civilians[70][71] to a survey estimate of more than 1,000,000 citizens.'

Very possible. But by then China will lose her status the 3rd as well. Everyone is in the same boat.
Indeed possible. But as per the most recent news, China's economy is one of the few in the world that's still growing somewhat tepidly, in light of this economic downturn. Goldman Sach's growth forecast for China is 8.3% for 2009, a bit optimistic, we'll see what the numbers look like at the end of the year.

Looks like Japan relies very heavily on it's exports to justify the size of their GDP. With a 3.3% shrink this year, Japan should hold on to the rank of being the 2nd largest economy for no more than 2-3 years.

ShackleDingleberry, my response to your idiotic post, keep Yasukuni as a public urinal, or burn it down for entertainment purposes.
Either way, the yasukuni shrine should be treated as the piece of garbage that it is.

Japan, if you haven't noticed, the UNSC, and certainly the world, isn't listening.
It's best for Japan to come to grips with the limitations of their diplomatic reach, however repulsive the North Korean action may be.

In this drama episode with the nutcase North Koreans, Japan is perfectly justified in shooting down the debris from their crappy rocket.
We are all sick and tired of North Korea's behavior. When will they just go back to basics and feed their starving people?

At this point, does it really matter much for Japan to assume a more global military role? Who cares?
It's not like the Japanese have the capabilities of times past to invade any of their neighbors anymore, and even if they did they would be faced with a well armed South Korea, and nuclear armed North Korea, and a super nuclear armed China.
Times have changed so much. Japan, chained to the United States, will forever have her military options limited to whatever her master wants and requires. And her neighbors have certainly done what they can to arm themselves to the teeth in order to enact their national ambitions, whatever they may be.
