For those of you keeping score, Toyota’s troubles really started just about the time they were slapping themselves on the back for being the largest car maker in the world. Since then…
-122,000 cars recalled in China for defective power steering -700,000 cars recalled in China for faulty manufacturing in the power windows (a record mind you for recalls.) -95,000 cars recalled in the USA for faulty brakes. 3.8 million cars (yes, a record) recalled in the USA for possible design flaw, or probably worse, of the accelerator pedal. -Lawsuit in the USA claiming that Toyota chassis rust out prematurely. -Lawsuit in the USA claiming Toyotas rollover data for it’s SUVs has been doctored. -Lawsuit in the USA claiming Toyota batteries are being dumped on the US market. -Lawsuit in the USA claiming Toyotas hybrid engine utilizes American patented technology. -82,200 recalls in Japan over defective power windows.
Now the vast majority of these recalls and lawsuits have occurred in the past 6 months. Toyotas strategy appears to be to flood the various media outlets with “glitzy new cars” storys and meaningless “domestic awards” presentations. I mean just look at the vast array of stories about Toyota here at Japantoday, I mean you can’t be serious. For many of these news outlets like Consumer Reports, I would say your integrity is definitely at stake. Toyota is in self destruct mode right now, best stay clear till the dust settles.

Cicada, so let me see if I got this right. You are condemning the US beef industry for honest mistakes yet you concede that Japan engages in more deceitful and dishonest practices. So why not say so from the start? And what does my nationality have to do with this discussion ? Does labeling offer some kind of support to your position ? This might explain why you choose to ignore the science, out.

Cicada, one last simple question for you. Do you really think, with all of the food scandals, mislabeling, and corporate culture of deceit and lies found consistently in the Japanese food industry that Japan is really testing 100% of its beef ? A simple yes or no will do.

Mistakes you say ? Honest ones maybe, but nothing as maliscious or scandalous as what we see from the domestic suppliers. Who are still in business flooding the market with “who- knows-what” as inspectors are busy wasting their time with a scientifically proven product. As for 100% inspections in the US… what exactly is it that you don’t understand about the science. Again, BSE is impossible to generate in cattle at the ages the US is exporting to Japan. What exactly are you going to 100% test for ? And Badsey, speaking of mistakes, It seems some are more deadly than others. I imagine the Saylor family of San Diego would take exception with your comments. Highly insensitive don’t you think. .

Sorry Cicada but you are going to have to explain in scientific terms just how spinal cords from the beef being shipped from any US factory is “unsafe”. American beef is slaughtered at 6 months of age, common knowledge for anyone following this story year after year.. This explains the final paragraph that has the Americans complaining about Japan’s unreasonable and unscientific concerns. You simply can’t have BSE in beef under 21 months of age. The world knows this also, which is why American beef has been certified and licensed for export many years before Japan, which just got their certification earlier this year. Japan still insists on exporting it’s beef at the highly risky later stages. Japanese should really be much more concerned with their domestic supply. With the common practice of mislabeling food products you’d think the local market would be completely closed. In any case Cicada I’ll not be squabbling back and forth with you about this. I believe in facts, not scare tactics. American beef is proven safe, can this nation say the same thing about it’s exported products…. Like floor mats for example ?

Must be a slow news day. I mean really, front page ? I could understand if the piece of “bone” in question actually contained BSE. But as any educated person knows, the Americans are shipping beef products scientifically incapable of containing BSE. My suggestion is for the various news outlets to spare us the scare tactics and simply let us know if any BSE infected beef actually arrives on Japans docks. Or better yet, save the front page headline with some real news should any Japanese citizen actually fall ill or even die from tainted American beef. Floor mats are front page news here in Japan, not bones ? Gimme a break.

"I cannot understand why the Japanese would adopt this stupid American holiday custom."
Probably for the same reasons the Americans adopted it from the British and Irish. I mean really now, you didn't think this was an American original did you ?

"OK, so it was noy health care, climate change or war. Still, President Barack Obama’s high-profile failure to win the Olympics for Chicago could feed negative narratives already nipping at his heels—that he’s a better talker than deal closer, more celebrity than statesman."
What a load of rubbish. The Olympics go to the City and Country, not some lame arse politician who will probably be out of office anyway.

Go easy on Ishihara here, he learned his lesson well. After New Zealand was awarded the 2011 Rugby WC Japan moaned and whined on about the “old boys network” and proceeded to bluster it’s way into finally getting the 2019 Rugby WC. Ishihara is simply repeating that tactic. Whether you like it or not is beside the point, it worked once, it just might work again. I for one find the method childish and unproductive in the long term. Japan should consider its international standing more carefully before pointing fingers at victors and award winners.
Ishihara does have a beef also, I just don’t agree with the way he is going about getting answers. In short, he should simply ask the IOC to explain, in detail, the final votes. This Olympic bid was Japan’s to lose. They had the highest scores coming out of the preliminary rounds. They also outscored Rio in 10 of 11 categories at the time. To finish in third and not even make the final round is shocking.

Alright, enough of the "blame the driver" posts we see driveling out here. You "hindsight 20-20" folks are showing a lot of disrespect for the driver and his family. What we know for sure is that the car accelerated out of control. He tried to brake, but lost power in the brakes. As for the 911 call, it wasn't the driver but his brother in law in the passenger seat. He was a 19 year California highway patrol officer, and for all we know he knew he was about to fly into an intersection (where know they were eventually hit, flipped over, and killed in a fiery crash) and was trying to get the traffic lights switched to red or some kind of poilce help to block traffic so they could pass through. Blaming the driver for anything here is absurd ! As for Toyota, well, they are about to go through one hellish legal battle to save their company. A combination of previous reports, an obvious design flaw, and the presidents most recent whining about how bad is market is, yeh, the same day he dropped a "too bad" comment regarding the deaths of a family of four including a young girl, well I sense some angry consumers and a very stunned American public. Talk about callous !

My daughter already looks a lot like Marie here, blondish hair, slim build, fair complexion. And it annoys me to no end the Japanese school girls that prattle on in broken English with their "Harros" and "whatzu yuru namu" garbage. The kid was born and raised here in Japan, she's just a toddler, and already she's being treated differently by almost every Japanese person she comes in contact with. Fortunately we have no plans to stay here long term, I can't imagine going through the teen years having to shoulder the burden of different colored hair, skin, eye shape in todays Japan, talk about out of touch with the times.

"in MEXICO, GUNS, GUN SALES, RIFLES, MACHINE GUNS ETC...are ALL 100% ILLEGAL! Why so many guns in Mexico? The USA is the No.1 provider of all of these illegal weapons to the mafias in Mexico."
Hah ! Marijuana, crack cocain, heroin etc are also illegal in the USA, and they are vastly supplied by Mexican drug cartels. So what's your point elbuda ? You might find a more sympathetic ear if you approach the story from a gun lobbyists point of view. It's exactly the reason that guns are illegal in Mexico that is fueling this vast expanse of violence.

Masai has his work cut out for him. After years and years of protecting domestic markets Japan has gained a reputation as a place that does not welcome foreign business. China has done just the opposite, as has Hong Kong, Singapore, and even Viet Nam. Todays Yomiuri reported that Japan has fallen well off the pace in terms of global competiveness. Maybe the new government can put some direction in this rudderless ship.

"Reported crime is lower, because the cops..."
Believe that low crime stats indicate an effective police force, subsequently they all get to keep their jobs and lounge around in the koban doing nothing for another year. Japanese citizens are very much aware of this. That is why so few even bother to report crime. In this case though I guess all the screaming and yelling from the house must have alerted even the most apathetic of individuals there in Fukuoka. I mean 8 suspects ? Sheesh.

Sorry but I'm willing to swallow this whole story hook line and sinker. I've met so many Japanese out there that will bite off their nose to spite their face at the drop of a hat. Anything to prove their point, and this time it was.... her bad attitude !

Hah ! If Japan was so livable why aren't the worlds immigrants knocking the door down to get in ? Japan is fine for singles who have no problem living in squallered cramped conditions. But if it's a family you want, well just follow the lead of the local citizens and... don't ! I'm right there with hokey on this, the prices quoted seem accurate and that final comment on suicides is a fair observation. Pawatan makes me laugh. Seems to me if the morning commute is so short, comfortable, and stress free, then why bother going for a seat ? Hell stand like I do, rub shoulders with the cutey on your right !

"The best way for any non-American to understand why health care is being debated is to look at the areas of the country where health care reform is most opposed and comparing that with said state's educational ranking."
Wrong ! The best way for any "non-American" to understand this health care debate is to first look at the facts. Fact- almost 85% of Americans between 22-44 have health care. Fact- Almost 90% of Americans aged 45- and up have health care. Fact- the vast huge majority of Americans have health care. What we are really talking about is the 18 million illegal aliens in the US that drain the coffers for millions and millions in free health care benefits every year. That is the issue here people ! It's no wonder the average American with health care sees no benefit in paying more and more for illegals. Obama needs to debate his immigration reform act first before health care. Dudes got his cart ahead of his horses.
