A wet towel. This is one of the central techniques of waterboarding. To experience the sensation of drowning. One of the most horrible tortures, apparently.
With waterboarding though, you have to learn to stop each time before the prisoner dies.
If the son was braindead though, who knows?

Mohammed allowed his followers to defend themselves against attack. But yes Serrano, I believe he would have condemned this kind of gratuitous violence.
Another danger factor is that the dancing idiots in Egypt may well get copycat ideas from this. They attacked Christian churches last year at the Coptic Christmas.

I don't think they can be convinced, Willi.
But I hope that young people will think for themselves before getting sucked in by shining promises (ultimately lies) and then bullying violence and threats.
Kill, kill, kill, slaughter!
When the blood lust goes down, people may actually turn to Allah/God in a true way. They may be sorry for what they have done, but that will not bring people back to life.
In the meantime may I give thanks to Boko Haram for giving a moment of clear insight into the absolute wrongness of what they are doing. (Just a personal thing, Willi.) Actually I have just been reading opinions of Muslims who are disgusted by what is being done by BH in the name of Islam.

just-a-guy, I cannot understand your post.
Are you saying the Japanese see themselves as the oppressors, or the oppressed? And... right-wing nationalists... make a loud noise? Well, there are right wingers, but they are in a serious minority.
In my experience living here for well over thirty years, there are very, very few people who glorify the war against their neighbors. The huge majority on the other hand are quiet, responsible, hardworking people who rarely give war a thought. Their education was 180 degrees opposite to Japan's pre-war education. They seem puzzled by the things people from neighboring countries sometimes say about Japan.

Jack, he didn't run a red light. He was a pedestrian crossing the road with his son.
The old guy who told him off got punched, but hit his head on the sidewalk/pavement as he fell. Now that is very unlucky. They'll have a hard time proving murderous intent.

This proves to me that the A-Qaida/Boko Harama/Wahibi strict interpetation of the Islamic scripture is just plain wrong. A murderous illusion.
On any level.
Anti-human and anti-divine.
Mistaken, dangerous and wrong.

'yosun' has a valid point.
The battle was between occupying forces, and if the allied troops suffered months and years of brutality, the local mostly innocent Chinese living in Hong Kong and Singapore suffered far, far worse.

Korea has become more and more aggressive in dealing with flagrant violations by Chinese fishermen. Russia can be nasty if you try to fish without permission north of the Korean peninsula.
Is this driving Chinese captains over to 'softer' targets like Japan?

Nothing to get alarmed about. There have been lots of fires at nuclear facilities in Japan.

Agreed with gogogo. No reason to believe the state media when they say it was last Saturday.
This was traditionally done in Japan too. The death of the Emperor was announced weeks after the event; in the meantime they made sure that there would be no problems of succession. When everything had been ironed out, the death would be announced.
In fact I read an announcement of his death in the news on a Chinese(?) Taiwanese (?) site a few weeks ago, and I am still wracking my few remaining brain cells trying to remember where it was reported.
Perhaps that one was the real death?

Just this afternoon I was driving along and the lights changed against me. (Before I saw this article)
With a huge amount of effort, a mother put all her weight on the pedal and started to slowly wobble out across the road with two small children on her bike. She had bags of shopping hanging from the handlebars. I sat there thinking just how vulnerable she was, and just how tough many of these mothers are. The thought of my accidentally hitting her also passed through my mind, and for the umpteenth time I realized what a lottery it is for a driver or a cyclist on Japanese roads, especially as the J Police can come down so hard on you.
Every accident is different and contains a multitude of factors, and the insurance company apportions percentages of blame. If you kill someone you will likely end up in prison.
PS As someone pointed out above, a zebra crossing in Japan carries almost no weight with most drivers. It is safer for new arrivals in Japan to assume that most cars will NOT stop for you.

The unusual combination of dress is one thing, but there is no description or record of their attitude at the time.
Easy for them to sue over this. Easy for us to discuss clothing here, but they were on their way to a conference on Islamophobia! Challenging looks? Paranoid looks? Despising looks? What?
Had they been calm and respectful then he probably would have had no objections to letting them on.
My guess is that the captain made his final decision on their expressions and the look in their eyes. Without proof to the contrary, I am afraid I would have to back the captain's decision here. If he was wrong in this case, still nobody got hurt, even if many people were temporarily incovenienced.
Captains still need our support making such difficult decisions.

Tokyo Sky Tree is a very clever piece of engineering, but they were limited at the base by the narrow triangular shape of the old railway/railroad marshalling yards there. Have they been too clever for themselves? Hubris?
Although I admire what they did, I remember expressing the opinion here on JT that a Hundertwasser style of green gardens living complex would have been much more suitable for Tokyo, for a number of reasons too obvious to state here.
