WilliB, to quote from the article above: ...the backup equipment installed at the plant since the crisis began is makeshift and may break down. He said winter cold could test their strength. “A turning point was to have successfully established a circulation system for cooling water,” said Kazuhiko Kudo, a nuclear reactor expert and professor at Kyushu University in Fukuoka. “But the circulation system is not a proper one for nuclear reactors and is still a stop-gap measure,” Kudo said. “The system in Fukushima, which is placed outside the reactor and connected with long pipes, is quite unstable,” he added. “It is necessary to further improve the system as quickly as possible.”
Does this not say to you that a necessary water-driven cooling system is still in place and functioning , however crude and rickety?
External cooling is still needed, I am afraid, and no-one is denying it.

Sorry, lucabrasi, not quite right. Sweden is considering charging him with rape, at the request of two women.
The authorities need him to appear there.
Sounds like he's afraid there might be some truth in it...

The guy is a slimeball. No need to keep on re-proving how Western democracy works.
Get him to Sweden and get those charges out of the way. After that he's free to to what he likes.
At the moment he's wasting everyone's time, patience and tax money.

To people above who say they want to send him money, stick 10,000 JPY in an envelope and send it to:
Mr Naoto Matsumoto, Tomioka Town, Fukushima Prefecture.
Or copy and paste 福島県富岡町松村直人
He's world-famous. He will get it.
& Happy Hollystix to all!

Don't want to go too cold though.
What the experts above are saying about miles of exposed cooling water pipes, well, skipping around saying, is that these pipes might freeze solid.
Or put more simply, "Hey, TEPCO, almost time to start lagging some of those pipes, eh??
Nudge, nudge, wink, WINK!

If they are handing out latest-edition drones gratis to Iran, surely they could have sold the F22 to Japan.

"Warum?" sounds like German, not French. Or is it Flemish? Or is this area close to the border, with a German speaking population, I wonder?
There are 101 likely reasons but people are not encouraged to talk about them in public, so, pointless question.

unreconstructed, there was a giant tree there and people were shopping.
The elites won't want to cancel it, but I can imagine they won't allow anyone to call it Christmas.

An acquaintance was asked by a zoo in Japan some years ago to come and stuff their dead panda. (True story) Well, he and the people he was with did the job, but they didn't know how to dispose of the body, so, you guessed it...
The moral of the story is that pandas in captivity die, and something has to be done, but what, without offending anyone's sensibilities, especially when certain countries are involved?

One to you Maitake.
In the J version they mention that there was a stop/yield sign at the crossroads on the old(er) geezer's side. In this case the charge of 'ageism' against you is dropped. http://headlines.yahoo.co.jp/hl?a=20111213-00000096-mailo-l09

The Chinese skipper who rammed the Japanese coastguard vessel returned a national hero. This kind of thinking must be behind the aggressiveness of the fishing fleets.
