Well if the girl was hit by an oncoming vehicle then it was not a Motorway/Thruway; in Japan at present the law states that you have to buckle up in the back seat if you are on a toll-paying Motorway/Thruway, but I believe it leaves it open or up to the driver's discretion on regular roads. If this is the case, then the Police do not have anything to charge him with.

As the above posters have repeated, "Hello, Japan! Make your kids wear belts, even if you choose not to!"

jeancolmar and Richard I, good posts.

As long as science keeps working on less harmful methods of propulsion, then I see a long and useful existence for personal private transport systems. For most non city-bound people the car is a necessary tool, and in many cases can extend the ability of older people to be independent and to avoid relying on state help.

There is the possibility that the first two or three chambers are loaded with blanks for just such eventualities.

Yes, my university kids seem to have little interest in owning a car, compared to a few years ago. (Out in the boondocks here on the edge of a medium-sized city safely away from the influence of Tokyo.) Out of a class of 30 19-yr olds, there may be two or three who show interest.

When they were kids most of them didn't play with model cars; maybe transformers, or computer games perhaps.

So, let's get this right. The businessman with the chair is attacking the fat bloke in glasses, tights & slippers who is trying to ward off the blow with a bamboo sword? There is something limp slumped in the corner?

Just supposing Israel decides to cede to the Palestinians the territory that they claim has been stolen from them. (In the interests of a lasting peace.)

    1. What lands are we talking about? Is this 100% clear to all concerned?

    2. If Israel does/did give such lands back, will/would that end the conflict?

Who is the real victim here? A) The guy who just wanted peace and quiet to watch the movie and took the law into his own hands because no one dares fight for common sense? B) The bad-mannered guy with the noisy family who just couldn't take a hint to shut up during a movie? C) All of us today?

PS Personally, it depends how you cut the cake. My savings have taken a drop of 42% against the JPY... that's more than the 10,000 USD that the good lady from California put in her cracker box.

USA Ronin, what you describe is certainly happening, but I suspect the subprime loans problem set off the whole chain reaction, to savings insecurity, loan refusals, loss of jobs, drop in commuting by car, fall in gas sales, drop in gas prices...

    Thanks guys.

Slowly losing the battle here, but I am still alive, so some of it must be right.

My workplace forces me to think and do things that my naturally lazy brain would not allow me to do if I retired.

I use the stairs instead of the elevator 50% of the time.

Been on the banana diet for two months now, one or two bananas and some lukewarm water for breakfast. Usually holds till lunchtime and the brain functions pretty well, but it's all downhill from then on. The diet tends to be non-meat, but the wife feeds me stuff that I would avoid if I could be on my own again.

Visited a little fishing village yesterday and climbed a hill and that felt good.

My motto: "You really need to do more exercise, but don't force it."

Well, I don't know... the old lady was right about one thing. She had lost faith in her bank and decided to keep her life savings in a cracker box. It came back too, again, a better bet than the banks!

Yup, I can see where she's coming from.

"Some Asian nations"? Why zero in on Japan alone?

Taiwan comes to mind first. Then Vietnam, and Malaysia are obvious candidates as they've had bitter run-ins with China over islands disputed between them. Japan will also be one of such Asian nations, for sure, as will South Korea.

But hey, as long as there is a common enemy everyone will be happy. Whether 'Terrorists' or 'Pirates'. Maybe the UN should fund the bad guys, just to keep the world at peace! :D

Why do people have to use foul language to describe such women? They are the very ones who use/abuse them, and then look down on them afterwards. Maybe they are looking down on themselves? Trying to stamp out something inside themselves that they feel is a weakness? It's self-perpetuating.

There was a clean part of Iijima Ai that no-one managed to touch, not even the rapist in her childhood.

If there's anything to learn from this. From my experience.

Some women should definitely think more about how their actions can affect men. Some are just too cavalier.

Make the break mutual... or at least take the time and soften it as much as possible.

Some men need lessons in how to deal with jealousy/possessiveness. Reminds me of the Iranian guy who threw acid in the face of the woman who rejected him just so no-one else could have her.

Guns are just incidental in this, IMHO.

Having said that, what a cowardly loser.

It was not big in the news but a large Japanese oil tanker was hit by an RPG round from one of these pirate groups off Aden not too long ago, spilling oil into the sea. It would make sense to have a naval ship in the area.

Potsu, "Geez...she was a drug addicted former porn star...from some of these posts you would think she was Mother Teresa."

Well, she didn't have the body of Mother Theresa, but she did have the heart, and a bubbly personality on top. To me she was a saint, despite what anyone says. (Think of the lotus, which grows up out of the muck, to make the world a brighter place.)

Her death makes the world a sadder place. May her soul rest in peace.

I respected her. She was human, warm and intelligent, and she had principles. I am sorry that she died alone. Perhaps people put her on a pedestal, thinking she was some kind of unattainable Goddess, when all she really wanted was someone honest and caring to share her life with.

    Salvation. Hmmmm....

A bit like the world economy?

That is, I cannot save myself. I have a sense of falling, or failing, and I cannot stop myself by my own power. I have tried, but it doesn't work. Is there someone or something that can help me, something stronger than me that can set me in balance or equilibrium or stability and give rest to my panicky heart?

Some people reach a time in life where they sense no way forward except a choice between going insane, committing suicide or joining a religion.

To such a person with the temptation to try religion the banner above would be very appealing, I should imagine... It's in black and white and there is no doubt.

To most of the posters on JT who are not at such a time in their lives, the banner looks illogical, because the Muslims etc., say exactly the same thing.

Through Mohammed and Allah, or Christ and Jehovah, etc.

In the meantime, Happy Christmas, and Happy every other day of this year and next to everyone!
