He told Ms Pee to run with the 7,500 bucks. That gives me a clue as to his mental state.

As a man 'with multiple drug convictions', he would have been naturally super paranoid that his family could be a potential target anytime.

Many people are not aware of what time of year it is or what festival is being celebrated. (Those who are deeply into computer games for example.)

The daughter is pre-Hallowe'en. It's evening and suddenly you see a bunch of strange people in masks approaching your door and it's OMG, Grab the money and run!!! Don't worry about me. I'll take care of the rest! ... ... ...

They are caught in a trap. Narrow-mindedness in religion is an easy mental trap to fall into. Others, usually innocent like many of the people in Bali, often get dragged in and die as a result. In this case these three lazy religio-centrics have also brought their own deaths upon themselves.

Not much of it left, but is it now now time to grow up and ask for help from 'the One Power that is keeping us all alive' to see the truth and help their young followers not to fall into the same trap. For the sake of the future. Please. Not for the sake of some narrow-minded interpretation of a 'Holy Scripture'...

What false accusations? If they happen, then I know how the accused must feel. "Boy, I wish I HAD groped her, since no-one believes me and I'm going to get done anyway."

SumoBob, you are right, but many of the police cannot be bothered to get the name of the card right. If they demand "passu-po-to, ...PASSU-PO-TO!" don't say no and try to head home for it. Everyone should be very careful to quietly show their Gaikokujin Toroku-shomeisho.

I have been assured on many occasions that the family often gets sent a massive bill afterwards. For stopping a train and disrupting the services or jumping off a motorway bridge and wrecking cars, you can completely bankrupt your own family. Common knowledge years ago, maybe it's time to re-educate the populace about how not to inconvenience others. In Edo times they seemed to manage it all right.

Jumping 'straight to hell' into the caldera of a volcano such as Mt Aso in Kyushu is quite common, a friend told me the other day. Not seen supporting figures myself, though.

When the police cracked down on drunken revelry in the London tubes a few months ago and banned open cans of beer, it was all over the news here. I think the J police have taken their cue from that...

In an ideal world, just as you can use antler from deer as a carving material, so you should be able to use ivory without causing the death of any animal.

CITES prevents the movement of ivory across international borders but allows sudden massive shipments, and then again blocks the movement of the resultant small carved objects... if they are "ivory of illegal origin". Thus, in Africa, in China, in Japan, local artisans are allowed to work and produce, but MUST sell only nationally and not to tourists or abroad, right? Or is it OK if they are of legal origin? Or is CITES avoiding the issue?

Hmmm... so it's like we have blood diamonds, and now blood ivory? Conversely we are aiming for certified legal diamonds and certified legal ivory, correct?

In the (pre-war) Imperial flying boats the passengers could wander up and down stairs, go to the dining room or the lounge, and even have their own cabins to change for dinner, sleep, etc., I believe. Flights to South Africa would stop on Lake Victoria to let the passengers enjoy the scenery. A different pace of life.

Have we really 'progressed' in our fabulous modern age?

Now it's hell. Constant body and luggage checks, pressure selling, bad air, cramped conditions, fiddly paperwork, restricted movements. Terrorists in their mistaken idealism have guaranteed that everyone's lives are a misery. Sometimes I imagine that convicted criminals could be condemned to fly constantly round the world for a period of several days. That would drive them mad. They might even make the resolve to go straight. Much, much worse than prison.

The blatant rudeness I have experienced by KLM staff pales by comparison.

Smythe. Most of the long guns they are firing weigh 5-10 kg, but the one you see at this end of the line looks like a 6-10 Monme Samurai gun, a Shi-zutsu, which probably weighs a bit more.

As part of the display some groups will fire larger 'hand cannons' of 20, 30, 50, or sometimes 100 Monme, which can weigh over 30 kgs.

PS Although we think of diameter of inside of barrel, Monme is the unit of weight for the ball. (Rather than 'caliber' or 'bore'.)Thus a 10 Monme gun would fire a lead ball of 37.5 grams, (.70 caliber?) and 100 Monme gun shot would weigh 375 grams.
