It's like you walk in to discover some guy on top of your partner. You ask him to pull out and leave, and he responds: "I will start leaving on Monday, depending on your attitude."
Sorry, mate, but it's time to leave, like NOW!!!!

In the UK there is something called "sending someone to Coventry." Some poor kid discovers that no-one will say a word to him/her.

Good thread this. Helping me to focus on what I've seen over the years here in Japan but never fully comprehended.

So, nutsagain, you are saying that the best way would be to create a snitch society where hidden spies report to the authorities to mete out some kind of punishment on the fingered person? Haven't we tried that in East Germany?

They have also taken Senaki. These two pincer movements southwards threaten to break Georgia into three pieces, attack the pipeline and cut her off from her sea ports. The idea that this Russian invasion was planned way in advance does make sense. Even if it was only a contingency plan...
One interesting development is the port of Sevastopol who say they might not let the Russian fleet back in. Ukraine sympathizes with Georgia's desire to join NATO.

Gotta make a couple of things clear here.
Bush and Blair never fooled anyone except fools. It was obvious to most of the world there was no connection with Al Qaeda. It was also obvious that Bush was looking for an excuse to attack Saddam, and it was obvious that with the military assembled after Afghanistan it was a golden opportunity to attack.
The motive? Saddam's words and gestures made it plain that he would be a formidable enemy if he managed to get hold of any serious weapons. That's why Israel bombed the reactor. Same thought. Self preservation. "Act now before it is too late!"
It was also obvious that Saddam no longer needed to build a nuclear bomb. He had money and oil ready to use as he liked. North Korea had developed missiles and nukes for sale. This exchange was not only likely in the near future, but 50 million dollars had already changed hands. The best method of defense/defence against a future threat from Iraq, an Iraq that had already invaded Kuwait, was pre-emptive attack. And the opportunity to redress the accusations of wimpiness against his father after the first Gulf War was tantalizingly close in front of him.
The excuse he put together never convinced me, and anyone who says they were fooled... well. I still think from a historical perspective that Bush and Blair did the right thing, even if it turned out to be a little messy to tie off.

sensei258 Similar thing happened here. Picked up a guest at Narita and on the expressway back to Tokyo he said the wheel was making a strange noise. I pulled onto the hard shoulder and checked. Someone had loosened the nuts on the left rear wheel and it was sooooo close to coming off completely.
Oh, and faulkmore, if 100 tires/tyres are slashed at 15,000 yen a pop, that's a lot of money someone has to pay out, 15,000 bucks, and think of all the gasoline wasted as they all drive to get new tires/tyres. That surely is a crime.

Happens all the time in Japan, from what I've heard and seen on the news. Tire/tyre slashing is actually quite common. Dead of night. (Paint scratching is another way to take out your frustrations with life.) You do sometimes see on TV individuals getting caught after the intallation of a surveillance camera. They usually have some secret agenda to justify it.

WilliB "Doesn´t matter. Jihadist are not afraid to die, because they go to muslim paradise."
I let this go first time around as I didn't want to appear pedantic, but it needs rephrasing. "Jihadists are not afraid to die, because they believe that they go to a Muslim paradise." Because the Mullahs have told them that this is so.
And in your comment above to Ossan, WilliB, "Are your lives worth more than someone in China?" you are missing his point completely, either deliberately or by mistake. His comment has nothing to do with the relative values of people's lives.

Can't say anything specific or I'll get moderated again, but it strikes me that the latest terrorist attacks are taking ideas from events that have grabbed the biggest headlines in recent weeks. Driving a truck into a place where a known body of people will be, jumping out and knifing some of them, ...
Hate to think what they'll come up with next.

Is the title really apt? (un-American vs non-American...)
Burning the flag is being un-American and unpatriotic, surely.
Not being American, = being non-American??? would be the advantage here?
