Well, I think anyone can answer the first question immediately. No, it is not under safe control. The whole clean-up operation is being played by ear, day by day and week by week. No-one has ever attempted to deal with such a scenario before. The best we can say is that they are trying to monitor everything and hope to be able to deal with any unexpected situation which arises. So far, so good...
In the meantime they have set various aims and goals to work towards to give everyone a sense of security. Naturally there will be wobbles along the way, and constant buffeting by aftershocks, but the thing for which we have to be most thankful is that it appears that the govt and the power company are determined to see this thing through, at whatever the cost.
Zichi will doubtless be here in a minute to answer more fully, but their goal of January 2012 has been moved back to the end of 2011. Look at that schedule closely and you will notice a one day difference!!!
As long as you are aware that 'cold' means not cold to the touch but 'under 100 degrees' and therefore it is not absolute or stable but something that has to be steered and controlled day by day, then you will be on the right track, IMHO.

Good informative article.
Interesting documentary on this subject shown on J TV the other day. Recommended if you are bored. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0799976/

The article gives no figures as to how many Japanese fans will or won't be allowed in by DPRNK.
How are we supposed to make a private decision on whether these figures are "acceptable" or not?

cactusJack, thanks for the pointer. A good lesson in how we should see things from all sides.

Good read zichi. Many thanks. I have now changed my position to totally anti-nuclear, whether uranium or thorium.
Just too many proofs that no system is perfect, and nuclear really needs to be perfect.
The results of any accident are too expensive and too depressing for the future of this planet.

Many colleges have had to ban alcohol during their festivals. Once one college did it, everyone else felt compelled to follow suit.

PS On the right of the diagram is the gas extraction and measuring facility. Above the reactor vessel is where they indicate the boric acid water is being poured. Presumably the water will hit the first heap of corium and then leak through to land on the second pile of corium either of which is where the criticality may have occurred.

Here is a diagram of where they think fission might have occurred. See the black arrows with the question mark, showing either inside the reactor vessel or on the floor of the containment vessel where the corium may have melted down into. Notice the temperature readings given for the used fuel rod pool and the bottom of the reactor vessel, but no temp reading is given for the bottom of the containment vessel. Hmmm... http://headlines.yahoo.co.jp/hl?a=20111102-00000035-mai-soci.view-000
Since radiactive Iodine has not been detected, which you would also expect in a fissive reaction, they say there remains the possibility of false Xenon readings and thus no fission after all.

They must have had some initial trouble working a new foolproof lighter to get this reactor lit up again.
Unfortunately it is upwind of most of Japan so when one of these SW reactors blows we are all stuffed.
Even worse is the thought of China building 75 new reactors within the prevailing winds, which blow from the Himalayas to Japan.

This new problem is in #2. There are still hot fuel rods lying around in the rubble of #3, according to zichi's infra red shots. I wonder what quantities they have now detected and whether this gas could be drifting through from next door?

I see on the news that they cannot rule out (to quote Tepco) the possibility that nuclear fission has been occurring in Reactor No 2.
They detected what seems to be Xenon gas.
They have started pouring water and boron into this reactor.
Step by step we get to Rome, I suppose.

Yes, I guess they must have taken it from the puddle and then put it through the filtration system. Maybe even had a mini system set up to do this in their lab.

Actually this was water from around the No 5 & 6 turbine buildings, not the ones in the explosions.
The water was treated by TEPCO, and the treatment included desalination, boiling and disinfecting so that it fell below the limits set by the World Health Organization.
From the Yomiuri 13 hours ago: 5、6

Many people say that F1 is boring. Much has been done to loosen things up. I wonder whether some of the saloon car racing ideas such as reverse grid races might not be workable.
I do a bit of circuit racing myself, so I know how exciting it is for each driver behind the wheel, even if that does not come across on TV. Every corner needs to be finely recalculated, every twitch of the steering wheel is different and the tyres/tires are living and dying things. The fuel needs to be constantly monitored. The driver needs to work out in milliseconds what is happening on track up ahead and what would be the best decision to make as flags are being waved. You need to be spatially aware of who is coming up behind or alongside and why.
Viewed from outside the cars all look solid and predictable, but from the crew and driver point of view, nothing is guaranteed, anything could go wrong at any moment and the adrenaline is simply amazing.

Buddh seems to be a good circuit. Let's hope they can make it stick, unlike some of the other Asian tracks.
Massa made a silly mistake. I am beginning to wonder whether he may have some residual periphery vision problems, especially to his left, from his big injury last year.
Hamilton seemed to hold back and play it cool as he approached two or three times. He must he having allergic reactions to Massa, and vice versa. LOL
Red Bull have a very smooth car for their boys. Congratulations to Vettel.

The danger here is that the Japanese expression Best Formalists, here being used directly mixed in with the English, is missing those vital quotation marks which should have let us know that we are not losing our brainpans.
