On the other thread following the earlier article I asked about the radioactivity of watch face radium.
Later, on the J evening news, reporters were asking the visiting experts about the possibility of radium, which they were unprepared to confirm of deny without further analysis.

Well, they've taken the bottles away for analysis. 30 microsieverts an hour they were giving off...
I wonder how much wristwatches gave off in the days when radium was used for night viewing?

Just checked J news sources and the poster(s) above was/were correct.
This radiation check in rice was for radioactive Cesium only.
The English plural 'substances' (above article Line 2) must be a mis-translation, I guess.

Here is what the head of the Fukushima rice and fertilizer cooperative had to say, and if you can work out what he is mumbling, then you are a better man than I am, Gungadin. (Taken from a Yomiuri TV interview, quoted in Yomiuri online.)
I guess what he wants to say is that the people may find this (blanket result) hard to swallow, but it will be his job to try and sell the rice from here on.

I have to say that I find the title of this article astonishing.
Such a blanket statement made no sense to me at all. ..."all newly harvested rice in the prefecture has passed inspection tests for radioactive substances"...
Does this mean rice harvested solely from agreed safe areas ?
Also, it does say 'substances' which sounds plural in English. Is that in fact not true? Some posters here are stating that it is only Cesium of one kind that was tested for. (?)
PS Cleo, no need to put the Kanji into italics! ;8)

"He knocked the girl over with his foot."
Does that mean he kicked her in the head with hard shoes, or that she fell over and hit her head on something else?
Either way a sad combination of bad luck.

The cynical line is the easiest to take, but the equal and opposite just might be true.
Maybe this NK defector does actually know something new and helpful.
Until then I will stand and wait.

Vettel on pole is no surprise, but the speed of the McLaren and Ferrari is interesting. I think barring strange accidents, Vettel will walk this, but if I had a television I would be watching the competition keenly to see what they've got.

Have to agree with bicultural.
I am a little surprised to discover that Hamilton's weak point may be his tendency to get flustered. Not a bad trait, coz it means he has humility, unlike some.
Anyway, good luck Jensen, Mark, anyone who can keep this championship alive.

If we want to cut emissions, we also need to cut the amount of power we use every day.
Humans need to take more exercise. Little things like grinding coffee do not have to be done with electric grinders.
Uranium Nuclear power looks at how much power we will need in a totally selfish lifestyle, and offers to provide that.
So by making more effort , to sleep earlier, etc., let's help bridge that gap between what renewables can provide, and what thorium reactors could generate if we all became slugs.
For a radiation-free planet! Yay!
(Well, already badly irradiated, but no more than this, please.)
