There is an interesting article here, Nicky, which makes a lot of sense. What you are saying may be true to some degree. http://www.cnngo.com/tokyo/life/could-monster-tsunami-hit-tokyo-one-day-321226?page=0,1

Many of these nuclear 'gypsies' are actually Yakuza, procured by construction companies run by Yakuza. NeoJamal, it sounds as if you are saying: "Long Live Boko Haram!"
Actually some of those ingredients mentioned above are incredibly dangerous.
Then again, pathetic kids haven't learned how to handle stuff, and being underage they cleverly get let off the hook (if it hasn't driven them loco) and the blame gets shifted onto the 'legal' herb shop instead.

Not sure what honesty and Christianity have to do with each other, or is that sarcasm, 321? Many of the immigrants are honest, regardless of which religion they may or may not have.
There is very little pocketing of lost objects in Japan for example, and where is the Christianity in that? It is actually a crime to take leftover change from the change dispenser of a vending machine.
By the same token I do agree that there is a growing underculture of dishonesty in Britain that does not sit right. It seems that there are few people brave enough to stand up and say out loud what should be obvious. Too many people quietly acquiesce. A problem in the education of children? Too many conflicting value systems?

The IMF telling Japan to raise more in consumption tax?
This must be music to the ears of some in government.
It is at times like this that Gai-atsu can prove so useful.
I can just hear those proponents of a larger raise in the Sho-hi-zei shouting: "Hear hear!"

I bet none of the plants in Japan wanted an IAEA inspection. They probably drew lots, with poor old Ohi drawing the short straw.
Everyone else meanwhile quickly shut down for 'regular' inspections or simulated 'stress' tests.

Very nice timing to shut down all these plants at the same time, knowing they may not get the permission to restart.
Perhaps a) they suddenly realized under the torrent of mistrust and abuse that they need to clean up the mess inside these plants and b) closing them down means that the IAEA can visit any time they like as there is nothing to see.
You have to wonder how a maintenance schedule has absolutely no stagger, no compensation in it at all. All OFF together.
Are they stupid, or trying to play fiendishly clever?

One factor we need to remember is that many Middle East states have Shiite underclasses. Iran, being a Shiite Republic, (not really Islamic at all, according to Sunnis and Islamic purists) would like to encourage them to rise up and overthrow their Sunni ruling classes. Iraq next door is now controlled by Shiites and through them to some extent by Iran.
Because of Iran's interests in the Middle East and wish to take a leading 'revolutionary' role there, most of the Gulf states at least would like to see interfering and proud Iran taken down a notch or two, regardless of who actually does the dirty work.
If Iran were a little more mature and responsible, then there would be less nervousness in the region. Iran definitely seems to want to upset the status quo, but once the area becomes unravelled...

Talking about Kobe can be a good lesson for us today. A college professor friend of mine went out drinking that night. She came home as usual and parked her bicycle against the outside stairwell of the four-story apartment block. She slept right through the thing, got up and dressed as usual, and when she came down the stairs the bike was still there but the building had become only two stories high. Well, that's how she tells it.

Were these women hiding in their cabins for fear of discovery? Lots of cover stories getting blown. Too many unregistered women on board (?), drugs, (?) high jinks, false identities discovered. This ship seems to have been a slice of modern life, a sort of modern-day Pompeii, frozen in mid-act.

Ben_Jackinoff, "I'm sure this will help improve the situation for Iran immensely."
The Iranian govt probably does not do irony, so be careful when giving them positive feedback! ;-)

You could look at this a very different way, of course. There were those scientists just before March 11th who were predicting just such an earthquake/ tsunami at the very place it was to happen. No-one gave them the time of day.
No need to be timid now. Now anyone with the benefit of hindsight will be more willing to step daringly forward and publicly ratchet up the percentages.
You can say after the next event, "I warned you all!"
On the other hand if nothing happens you can always say it was only a percentage and nothing hard and fast.
Win-win.

Iran has the right to block the eastern half of the strait, perhaps, but not the western half, right?
Even to block half, at 15 miles of sea, that's an awful lot of ships to sink, JapanGal, and then Iran would be defenseless.
The recent news about mine-laying would seem to be the more likely scenario. Mines can break loose and drift, so they could be a nuisance for everyone, including Iran itself. Iran has a few subs and anti-ship missiles too.

If the next one brings a tsunami, the subway is not a good place to be.
Remember to put some blankets, thermal underwear and down jackets with your survival kit, at least until the end of March.
Plan C could be a similar survival kit in your car, if you have one, which can function as a temporary home if necessary. Many people who lost their homes in the Hanshin earthquake slept in their cars for weeks afterwards .
