Ah, now I have figured out why I was given two negative marks above for presenting the Japanese version with a picture and a free translation.
My bad. It wasn't butyric acid (a concentrate of the substance found in rancid butter) this time. It was paint they were throwing. Apologies folks.
I was beginning to think that neutrality on this subject might actually be impossible. You are either heart and soul for, or heart and soul against! No objectivity permitted. Now wouldn't that be silly!
Incidentally, there is a small acknowledgement in this evening's NHK news that some protestors were hurt.

Admittedly I have a simple sense of humor/humour but I could watch the Yoshimoto Kogyo slapsticks for hours.
The Japanese really love to laugh but most TV talk and laughter shows are a particular kind of comedy that is hard for non-Japanese to appreciate. My wife lies slumped in the kotatsu chuckling away, when she is not watching Korean dramas or ice skating. Me, I don't even want to be in the same room.

To satisfy my own curiosity I just had a look at the J news for the other side's view.
The pic shows one rubber boat actually coming under a ship's rope with what (?) on the other end? The article says the two attacking boats threw over 30 bottles of butyric acid and also threw ropes with grappling hooks on the end, presumably in an attempt at boarding. (?) They also had a kind of sickle and cut and stole at least one of the side buoys, again supposedly in preparation for climbing aboard. Two of the ship's crew were splashed with the butyric acid in the bottles but there were no actual injuries to the J crew. http://www.sanyo.oni.co.jp/news_k/news/d/2012011801001261/

The article says that the objects were 'thrown', but does anyone know if they were tied on the end of ropes and thus pulled back again, or were they lost?
Is there any possibility that the rubber dinghy found itself under the poles and hooks for a moment in the heaving seas?
Who should we believe here?

You could say Peanut666, relatively speaking, that with the astronomical value of the Yen, now is actually the best time for Japan to buy energy from abroad. Must be way over 17% ahead these last few years.
Well, the hign Yen has to make the unpalatable option more palatable for some people up there.

Sure Fukushima nuclear plant was destroyed by the earthquake and tsunami in March 2011, and most of the seven Kashiwasaki Kariwa nuclear reactors were knocked out by the Niigata earthquake of 1997, but the Japanese government has been pushing HARD for Cool Biz (less so Warm Biz) since way back in 2005. Anyone remember Koizumi?
That is six years now that offices have been warned to set for 28 degrees in the summer (20 degrees in the winter). Granted it was part of a world drive to reduce energy consumption and release of CO2, but the business population here has been struggling for years to show they are cooperating with the guidelines. 2011 was even harder than the previous 5 years. This year, 2012, threatens to prove even worse, and they will be putting up corporate electricity rates?
Perhaps people have been cooperating too well. Does TEPCO need more revenue from what little comfort people still receive???

Normal part of speech and not offensive? Hmmm...
It's offensive if you describe someone as "Fkn nuts".
It's also offensive if you tell someone to "Pass me the Fkn nuts!"
The only thing they must have judged not offensive is use of the single actual swear word "fkn", which we cannot even write here as it would be offensive to JT readers and the general public.

This is exactly what Watson has been waiting for. Year after year of provocation and finally he has got some of the Japanese whalers to break ranks and lose patience. However this is spun, it can only be good news for him, thanks to the brave Guinea Pigs on board his inflatables. Even the injured parties will be happy now as they have a story, and material for claiming damages or whatever. Win-win.

Sadly we do not get enough bike or car racing on J TV. It's thrilling stuff to watch, and this lady will have known that, but I guess the TV companies work on audience numbers to rake in the cash. "If people want mash or pap, give it to 'em in bucketloads!" More 'Oto Resu' here please!

A friend in the construction industry here told me that cities like Hiroshima controlled by one gang are easier to work in. If there are several gangs and you pay a weaker gang protection money, then a stronger gang will come along and harrass you. (Same in Hong Kong apparently.)
The traditional advice was: do your homework and pay the strongest group to protect you, hahaha.
The local drinking establlshment Mama san here says she absolutely refuses to pay extortion, but they see her strength of character and leave her alone.
This Mr Kurose sounds like he understands the risks. Good man. Gambare!

Sure, but let who have the country? al-Qaida must represent less than 5% of the population there, although they would like to take over and control it, not as a home, but as a base for aggressive militancy around the world.

The word of one credit rating agency can make or break a country? And we cannot question them or doubt them? The country should do better? Hah! Nuts.
Then M&F disagree with S&P and suddenly we see they are not almighty, but just one company offering a different opinion. One is right and the other is wrong, then??? In-fighting among ratings agencies?

Now some people must be hoping that all of this will join up with Somalia over the water where something quite similar has been happening, but where the political believers in extremist Islam call themselves al Shabaab.

So there are the regular armed forces, ok, then there are the opposition demonstrators, ok, then there are the various competing tribes who are probably a law to themselves, fine, and finally there is the army of al Qaeda who are stepping in and taking everyone by surprise.

Uh oh, here we go... Romney may be rich, but it is said he dragged that wealth from the hands of everyone else he was involved with. A corporate-wrecking lemon squeezer? Some recent newspaper articles have paint him as quite an unsavory vulture-like character.

Borscht, yes, several of the readers thought she was driving a car, which accounts for some of the off-the-wall comments. At least she died doing what she loved and probably had no time to register what was happening. Flying through the air at over 90 mph is fast for the human body. RIP

The title does not say 'cut' off, but 'sliced' off. They are different.
Cutting would be one swift stroke and job done.
Slicing gives a series of fine lean cuts. Different kind of character.
