Just read an article in the Telegraph that there was a tradition for these big ships to sail as close to the shore as possible and sound the foghorn, to please tourists on the island.
This time though, say the islanders, the ship came far too close. Some talk of one of the crew wanting to shout and establish human voice contact with a friend on shore. (?)

This is not the first time this has happened in recent years. Someone with a grudge against the airline is my first guess. Possibly even blackmail threats could have been made beforehand, but we will probably never know the inside story.

Syria reminds me of the old question, ie, what happens when an irresistible force meets an immovable mass?
Should outsiders even be taking sides? What is the proper role for outsiders? Monitors? Referees?

Surely the ship is pointing the wrong way?
The maps show its regualr course to be east of the island, so heading north from Rome the island should be on the left with the bow pointing the other way.
Did the ship turn round in a circle, trying to make this little harbor/harbour?

First news said it hit a reef, then follow-up news everywhere started to say a sandbar, but 'reef' as in this JT article seems most accurate. Underwater rocks. The bottom was ripped open and there is a huge rock jammed into the hole. Certainly not sand...

Lass than a day out of Rome and they hit a reef? Where was the navigator?

Some of these girls have been exposed to sex or even abused from an early age so they have a 'better' understanding of what they are getting into. Maybe they even think they can handle it and ride the system for what they want in return.

If she had changed her name she would not want to put the money in the bank. If she worked for 17 years, then it is quite a reasonable amount to save. Let her keep it. She'll need it in old age.

Quote: Van der Sloot said he was involved in her disappearance in a videotape clandestinely made by a Dutch journalist. He later denied it, however, and has told several interviewers that he is a pathological liar.
If he says he is a pathological liar, is he telling the truth?

Some of the stuff that Panetta is saying to his captive audience is not actually true. "The world community is united" (on Iran)...
er, no.
This feels like a deja vu.

He was carrying a 'fruit knife' when they caught him, according to this evening's news. Probably looking for an opportunity to grab some cash and maybe a car...
Glad they got him. Well-spotted that cop. Maybe he should have been wearing a mask.

Quote MaboDo: "What does underwear have to do with the fact that he escaped over a wall with scaffolding? It is the escape that matters.
Sorry, I disagree. I think catching him is what matters. The questions stands.
Would you hide inside a building nearby? Would you have an accomplice in a car nearby? Would you steal clothes from a washing line? Would you break in, steal a kitchen knife, kidnap someone and demand keys to the car, etc.?
I hope that the Police are asking these questions, even if you aren't.

Naturally the world community wishes Iran to be a healthy member, honest about what it is doing.
Creating a nuclear bomb? Fine, but just say so and let's get on with other things.
Everyone thinks Iran is lying and Iran itself says nothing believable to clear this up. Does Iran really want to imitate Israel?
Iran's predicament is that if they tell the truth now and admit that they are building an atomic bomb, this will prove that they have been lying so far.
To avoid loss of face, Iran will probably keep pushing the lie, even though to everyone else it smells like a lie, and we may all get dragged into a very stupid war as a result.

You'd have to be a very thick-skinned and hard idealist to exist in Teheran, Jeremiah. Not a sunny place for liberal flowers to grow.
Your liberal facebook friends advocate war then, by rejecting the capitalist alliance and joining the socialist alliance?
Only China and Russia standing peacefully on the sidelines? Who would 'a thunk it?
