The mother's pre-emptive calling of a TV show to meekly ask her son to give himself in is a blatant back-pedalling, self-preservation move on her behalf, and only happened after the photo's were released. Damage limitation for sure.

...sort of more on point; the whole pedometer thing eludes me (as I am not a fatty).
The only time a human would need to buy something like this, is if they are being paid for the amount of distance walked.
Just walk.
Bicycle computers, I can understand, as serious road riders track some major distance, and are actually throwing themselves into aerobic exercise.

thywillbedone; you answered your own question; of course muscle shows up more on darker skin - gives sharper shadows.
These guys look fairly cut, but they just don't have the bulk to make it look any good. Like a lot of things in Japan, it is very much a case of a teenager imitating an adult.
Can't fault their effort though.

The truth is a mixture of the following;
More exercise at a young age, less junk food at a young age due to the pretty decent school lunch, naturally browner skin than the average white girl, loads of make-up and finally, the system of eugenics that occurs when an island is isolated to the extent that Japan has been.
And to be honest, aside from their thighs, I don't really see anything hugely impressive with the women here.
