You notice, excluding Oswalt, there is no significant impact pitchers on the list.

That's who Japan beat in order to get to the finals.

    All that work for nothing....

The plea bargain logic seems rather flawed, as it assumes that he was, what, afraid that someone else was going to expose it?

Japanese media "FACTA" did report it first hand based on insider information not of Woodford. So yeah. "Immunity" angle is not that far fetched.

One could argue that U.S. didn't field their "best" lineup during the last WBC but I'm not going to buy to the notion that the players that participated didn't "try". They wanted to win badly. This was obvious when they had that comeback win against PR during the semi-final stage where they celebrated as though they just had won the World Series.

The WBC is not a valid measurement of which team is 'better', especially given the moronic point system that allowed Japan to win in the first WBC despite losing a couple of times to Korea (then beating them to win). They got through ONLY on points, albeit they fared better in the second WBC

    Still hurts huh smith?

The point system employed during the WBC is the almost the same as the one used during World Cup Soccer except for the fact that there are no ties during the preliminary and the semi-final rounds. When people complain after the fact that the rules were already established prior can only be seen as "sour grapes".

But a needs abortion is covered by the NHI in Japan. That's why I was splitting hairs with you. Not all abortion procedures are the same, Nigel.

Don't need to see the reason why you are splitting hairs but as I have indicated on numerous occasions, there is absolutely no need for the physicians to NOT report induced abortions. What's the point?

But living in an environment of Nuclear Fallout is a Disaster too. Right. Especially in the area ground zero.

As far as I know, nobody is living in ground zero unless of course you count the workers working there as "living" there.

No it's all thanks to TEPCO and JGovt. for dribbling out information like it's somehow better this way. Like a Mass exodus would have hurt the economy. So it's best to keep the people calm and give a positive spin on things like a cold shutdown is imminent.

Yep. I'm all for Mass exodus of millions resulting in secondary disaster. (sarcasm)

2 million irradiated, the price of a child's health, elderly immolating themselves, organic farmers suicide, the phsycological scars of children and adults shunned as nuclear refugees, the shame felt by those who left, the broken communities, young women from Fukushima rejected by prospective partners, the guilt of farmers selling their produce --- the list goes on and on.

All thanks to the fear mongering rants by the anti-nuclear mobs.

These games costs cities millions on dollars. Have you looked at the Japanese economy? Tokyo can't afford to run again let alone pay for the games. Where is the infrastructure going to come from? Who's going to pay for it? The majority of Tokyoites don't want the games. Why Ishihara can't get this through his head is beyond me. Tokyo has tons of places for sports. They don't need any more.

The funding is already secured by Tokyo and is collecting interest. If you're interested where the infrastructure is coming from, you can click on the last 2016 bid proposal.

Really, Nigel? News to me on the first point. And I am not sure what you mean by "induced abortions"? Does this also apply to needs abortions?

There are "induced" abortions and "spontaneous" abortions aka miscarriages.

As for the second point you raise, you don't think there are clinics/docs that will be more than happy to deal on a cash basis to keep things on the sly? Really?

Since it's not covered by health insurance, of course it's going to be paid by cash. Duh!!!

Actually Antonios_M, the government and the TEPCO officials already stated as early as March 14th that there was a high possibility of a meltdown. But a meltdown within the containment vessel versus a core melt through breaching the outer containment and into the ground are two different night and day scenarios. But the latter seemed unlikely simply because the water level after the injection of water into the inner core and the pressure within wasn't consistent with a melt through scenario.

How much of fuel rod melted is not a simple calculation where you can figure this out with a simple calculator. It takes analyzing many sets of data at long periods in order to determine this.

Nigelboy. Don't know where you originate from but my home country reports a lot on child abuse. Infact, my country was deeply shocked by one particular high profile case a few years ago which caused a lot of soul searching. We still have way too many 'bad' parents and some of the sentences handed down are a joke but it has been admitted there is a problem.

Not to play down this particular incident but are you going to tell me that such similar incident is going to be reported by the national media in your country? Please. Don't insult my intelligence. I've never stated that child abuse isn't reported by the media. But when a certain country has so many of them, only high profile cases ever gets the coverage by the media.

Simply claiming that Japan has the highest number of abuse cases in the world based on what you read in the tabloid news is disingenuous. Even if we had a story similar to this one every day of the week for a year, that would still represent extremely low rates of abuse relative to the population. I understand that this is an emotional topic and people have emotional reactions but I don' think that gives you a license to change the facts.

    Good post.

You're going to have to get use to this here in JT.

News like the above barely gets "reported" by the media in their home countries and certainly not in the national level like Japan. Hence, there is a perception that there is a "growing" trend or a "worse" situation here in Japan as opposed to their home countries. This explains most of their comments. Think about it. There are estimated 2,500 deaths per year from Child abuse in U.S. Do you think the national media is going to report 7 incidents a day?

In regards to H. Matsui offer from the Giants, he was offered 5 year 5 billion yen at the end of 2001 which is a season before he could become a free agent. Going by the currency rates at that time (121 yen/$), that's roughly $4.13 million per season. Instead, he declined and signed a one year contract at 6.1 billion yen which is about $5 million.

nigelboy: and if you don't think it's an inferiority complex, you're kidding yourself

I see a lot of wishful thinking on your part there smith. Why would these protestors feel an inferiority complex when K-dramas ratings are not even in the radar? As some had already alluded to, many have already changed channels and turned off their TV during the day time. A few still want to see the repeats of J dramas and programming than the K drama so that's why they're protesting, IMO.

Also, I'm also with another poster in that I don't think this is protest is about K-drama which in the past was done in front of the Fuji TV headquaters.

But you said all Korean dramas are shown during the day. Can you explain your contradiction?

I don't think I used the word "all".

Change the channel, then. It's not prime time after all, right? :)

    I think they have.

    But the rentals are.

They're not. Go to Tsutaya's website and check the ranking.

And you are going to refer to the recent article in JT about Korean dramas outperforming Japanese/Foreign movies, this is already proven to be false.

    Who's confused, my friend?

You are. You see, Korean dramas shown in 地上波 channels are shown in day time which in the past were reserved for mostly repeats of J-dramas. The few Korean dramas that are shown in prime time are BS channels but you'd be embarassed to even compare the view ratings on any of these channels for they are notoriously low.

A simple googling of "ドラマ 視聴率”will give you a clue that K-dramas are nowhere in sight. (I should of thought about your incapability of doing such easy task. My apologies)

In any case, this whole thing is so amusing it's nearly sad. These people could be marching on behalf of the victims of the March 11th disasters. They could be marching about how poorly TEPCO has handled things. They could be marching about the shocking debt Japan is in. Nope... they are marching because of jealousy over foreign TV shows! Ah, Japan.

I agree that these people should be doing a lot of things but I don't think there is any jealousy involved here. I think these people are sick of watching K-dramas fed by the media outlets.

Gee smith. Is that the same clueless idiot you allegedly know that didn't know about the government official drinking decontaminated water during the press conference? And are you sure that you are not confused with the K-dramas shown in BS channels versus J-dramas shown in 地上波 channels on Sunday night?

btw I've never seen a Korean drama in my life. Are they really that good

A daughter of a wealthy corporate titan falls in love with a young man from lower class. Father is pi$$ed for he had already planned for her to marry his elite employee. Father threatens the young man and tries to convince him that his daughter's happiness can only be achieved by marrying his employee. Young man, convinced that he cannot make her happy, suddenly stops contacting her. Daughter later finds out that her Father is in on this and threatens him. Father finally accepts. Repeat ad nauseum.

In any case, K-dramas are shown during daytime which was usually reserved to show "repeats" of J dramas. If the current ratings are of any indication, the Japanese viewers still much prefer repeats over the above K-dramas.

I'm afraid you are wrong. Induced abortions conducted pursuant to Article 14 Section 1 of 母体保護法 is not covered under the national health insurance. Furthermore, under the same law, Article 25 specifies that such abortions must be reported to the prefecturer office by the medical staff who performed such operation.
