Sorry tmarie.
You stated that there were crimes unreported by the media during the crisis especially in the affected area. I asked how you could have known if it's unreported. I further went on to give you statistics indicating the crimes were down during the time period especially the affected area. Then you went on about how you knew a person who came from there and that women gathered around with their children because they were afraid. I asked where the husbands were for at this point it was blatantly obvious that you were making stuff up as you go.
As for the generosity being somewhat a formality as opposed having actuall meaning, I tend to agree. But I tend to think it's just an extension of the natural generosity, manners, and omoiyari attitudes of this society in general which is also displayed in their top notch service industry.

Weird.
According to Japan Automobile Manufacturern Association cite, it's lower Than UK, France, or Germany. I know the yen rates haven't gone up that much.

You countered nothing tmarie. I simply let it go due to the absurdity of it. I wanted to leave it untouched.
I don't find it strange simply because it's the same rant I hear where bunch of gaijin ghetto talks about. These people for the most part never adjusted to Japan due to lack of language comprehension, frustration from not fitting in, to just poor attitude from the beginning.
Japanese manners, courtesy, or omoiyari is known throughout the world and it's not the Japanese who are reporting this but the rest of the world. Countering this fact by citing your so-called experience or making stuff up as you go isn't convincing anybody maybe except for the rare few I cited above (ghetto types) who happens to be the majority in this site.

Strange tmarie. In my experience, i've experienced more of those bad manners that you cite more so in other countries than in Japan. Strange that a country with such lack of manners and civility can act the way they did during crisis. (Examples given in my previous post)

You're confused as usual. The government of Japan doesn't cry "Northern Territories is ours!!" when a Japanese fishermen is poaching within the area because Japan and Russia already has an agreement in place for the boundaries. It's a simple matter of whether the fisherman was within or outside the agreed boundary. Same thing with China. Japan and China has already an agreement in place. But what this fishermen and the one just a while back ago was violating this agreement because they were fishing within the coastal zone (within 12 nm).
When you preach for consistency, at least get the information correct and then determine if the incidents draw a parallel.

What's with this obsession with opening doors?? Seems like people are doing it just beause they want to be thanked.
What I witness in Japan is when somebody opens the door, the receipient either bows or say "suimasen" or both. In English speaking countries, it's "thank you" or "thanks" followed by "you're welcome" as though they're playing "right back at ya!" ping pong.

Agreed. Blame the source (AFP) who basically recited the Senkaku incident which of course would lead to many readers believing that this particular island is also under dispute.
And as for Patrick Smash question on how many Japanese have died at the hands of Russians, there was a incident in 2006 where a Japanese fisherman was shot in the head. The other was in 1956 but I don't have the numbers before that.

Marcelito,
After only four months of implementing the FTA between Korea/EU, Korea exports fell 5.5% while her imports grew 22%. And this is occuring despite the fact that Korean currency was hovering near the low levels after the Lehman shock. Also, let's not undermine what is going to transpire in the EU in the near future.

Marcelito,
As I alluded to the previous post, Japan has already established FTA or EPA with 6 of the 9 participants in the TPP with the 7th (Australia) under negotiations. So let's dispense with this "joining the 21st century" shall we?

Smith.
The operative word here is "supplemental". Please follow the discussion. I'm serious. You are more than free to not pay kenko hoken, pay your fees out of pocket, and see if your overseas insurance provider will reimburse you the fees ok? I'm sorry. You don't understand the concept since you're from Canada where you wait six month to get a simple MRI.
Secondly, kokumin nenkin premiums are SAME for everybody. Hence, the payout to those who enrolled at the same time and fulfilled it's terms at the same time will receive the same payments. The distribution amount can be estimated if you gonto the MHLW website. Now, if you feel that you could live off of that amount, by all means don't save. If you think it's not enough, start accumulating and invest privately. (most population does this). Do some research on Kokumin nenkin as opposed to relying somebody else like me to give you lessons every time. The establishinent of Kokumin nenkin was not intended as a sole source of once you retired. The law was enacted for the purpose of making it a society as a whole to take responsibility and well being for the past generation first.
And as for the interest rates, I have no clue what you're trying to say. But I hope I can clear this up by offering a scenario. Citibank, who has offices and branches throughout Tokyo, can very well offer 5% on their yen denominated time certificates. I believe the population of Tokyo will line up in thousands to open up the accounts there. Quick question. How is citibank going to make money where they could derive more than 5% on their accumulated yen??

Smith,
If U.S is not involved in the conflict, it means Japan voided the security agreement which in turns means Japan amended the constitution whereby their forces strength increased quite substantially.

Smith,
Any company whether it be foreign or domestic can offer supplemental insurance coverage. This is a no brainer for anyone who resided here for a year. Secondly, any individual that is hoping to get by with only a Kokumin nenkin only seriously needs to have their head examined. Thirdly, the low savings rates are as a result of deflationary spiral which in turn means that bringing in cheap stuff from overseas would worsen it.

AFLAC offers supplemental insurance due to Japanese laws. What you basically stated by giving this example is that foreign companies can succeed under Japanese regulations if they are savy, efficient, and intelligent.

You're right JapanGal. AFP has a habit of connecting two separate issues. But then again, this is typical of western media when it comes to Japan.

Netninja,
The only reason this made news is because this particular boat ignored JCG orders. There are several dozens of these intrusions every year by Chinese fishermen but they don't make the news because most of them comply.

Some guy just made a comment about having a cake and eat it to.
During the post war period, Japan made no secret that they wanted to maintain adequate amount of self sufficiency especially rice. Now let's look at the counterpart. Threat to enact protectionist measures to developing nations which resulted in Plaza Accord. Omnibus Foreign Trade and Competetiveness Act. Structural Impediments initiative which is basically ordering Japan to not spend government money to promote exports. Despite these measures, the trade surplus of Japan grew simply because they made no excuses. They exported industrial materials, machinery, electrical parts and components which are value added products which U.S could not compete. (not talking cost wise, I might add). They adapted as a result of Plaza Accord where manufacturers set their operations in U.S. Now, almost 70% of the Japanese vehicles sold in U.S are made in U.S.
And now they want free trade??? How convenient.

As I stated in a different article, this nothing more than a FTA/EPA agreement between Japan and United States disguised as TRans-Pacific kumbaya.
Japan has already FTA or EPA agreements with six out of nine participants in the TPP with a on going negotiation with Australia. So, any moron that implies that Japan is shutting itself out like the Edo period really needs to get a loan and buy a clue.

ExportExpert,
There was a time in 1972 when U.S. experienced a severe drought which propelled them to halt exports under government orders. Hence, there is a good argument for developed countries especially with a population of 123 million to maintain some levels of self sufficiency.

This is essentially a U.S-Japan FTA/EPA agreement forced upon Japan disguised as Trans Pacific nations kumbaya.
Japan has already in place FTA agreements with six of the nine participants not including the current on going FTA negotiations Australia. Hence, the question now that should be raised is whether its beneficial for Japan to enter such arrangements with U.S. at this time during a deflationary spiral and high yen rates.
