Maybe you spent a day going through all the Japanese and non-Japanese media on this issue (probably only non-Japanese, since Japan doesn't like to acknowledge its poor conduct of issues), but how do we know the water he drank is from where he claims it is? Maybe it was just a bottle of fresh Canadian spring water bottled in Hokkaido.

I don't get what you mean by "Japan doesn't like to acknowledge its poor conduct of issues" Please clarify.

A journalist "dares" him to drink the water and when he does it, it's still not satisfactory. And when you present the data, their reaction is "how do you know it's safe?"

It's like going in circles with these hack journalist and their followers.

Reckless -- bingo. Those saying that Japan's debt is "owned" by Japanese are just playing the denial/euphemism game played all the time in Japan. If Japanese were not so insular and risk-averse, they would be demanding a much higher return on their savings, and then the whole house-of-cards would fall apart.

LOL. Herefornow believes that if the population "demands" high interest rates, the financial institutions will cave in and give it to them. Well, I guess that's what happened during the late 80's when the interest rates were at 7%.

The reason that the Japanese population whether it be the financial institutions or the insurance companies buy these debts in record numbers despite getting record low level yields is because of what is termed 過剰貯蓄 which in the simplest form is an increasing disparity between the money held by these insitutuions versus high/moderate investments and loans disbursed. In other words, the money is there to be circulated to the economy but the current economic climate is putting a stop.

Naturally, when the economy picks up, this would result in banks lending and investing more which will result in less available funds for purchase of debts. On the flip side, if the economy was picking up, it would simply mean more tax revenues hence less reliance of debts.

Another thing to note is Japan's personal financial assets is well over 1,400 trillion yen with about 800 trillion yen owned by individuals over 65. Hence, it's as though the government is issuing bonds to finance the pension to these elders and yet these elders are not spending. In fact, one economist had indicated that the increase in government debt coincides with the increase in personal financial assets.

So in essence, "95% owned by Japanese" is simply a net sum zero on the Japan's balance sheet which is very different from Greece, Argentina, or U.S.

    You misunderstood me smith.

As with any employment related visa in developed nations, a skilled individuals can stay if and only if there is a employment sponsorship and that such skills cannot be filled by local workforce. That's why I placed the world "exceptional"

    Gee smith.

If some of these workers turn out to be exceptional, they will be offered sponsorship from the employers where they they can "fulfill the conditions" as you say. What the government does not want is an extension request where the employers' start taking advantage of this emergency visa.

I'm not counting on JT crowd to sympathize with the mother but according to Mainichi, the bus stopped in front of the victim's house. Mother went to meetnthe older sister but unfortunately, the little sister followed the mother and went underneath the bus without anybody knowing.

If the mother took her one year old with her, this would of never happened. If the mother simply stayed without meeting her 4 year old, this would of never happened. But then again, hindsight is always 20/20.

    Adam Brown,

Calm down. The courts are not involved unless the prosecutors decide to bring this charge which based on Japan's low % of arrests versus criminal trial, would most likely lead to release.

That's, of course there is more to this incident.

    Hategobo,

Welcome to JT. Unfortunately, you're sadly mistaken if you think those comments are doses of cynicism. As Hide alluded to, the law dictates that they would be paid in yen with at least a minimum wage even though in all likelihood, they will be paid higher. Secondly, even though their housing cost during their short tenure will be subtracted from their salary, majority of this expense will be heavily subsidized the employer via corporate housing. Secondly, if you checked other sources, the employers are quoted to saying that they want to bring "highly trained and experienced" individuals. Hence, an unemployed Japanese worker will not do.

Agree with your assessment that these employers are hardly philanthropists and this by no means is a gesture of goodwill on any party. It's simply trying to make a win-win situation out of this awful disaster.

    Smith,

To answer your question, it's 4 months. So I guess you've been donating 30% of your salary since the quake since you're not "impressed" with the recent move by the cabinet. (NOT!!!!)

Also, Japan has one of the lowest public employees per 1000 with barely over 30. (France over 80/ US over 77) I guess my question is if Japan needs "trimming", what do these countries need? Overhaul?

Thai wages? Give it a rest. Do people here posting this garbage know the difference between the average Thai wages that of Japan's minimum wage?

No $hit IRSN. Of course deep water fish and mulluscs are going to be susceptible to cesium pollution. This was predicted months before by experts in Japan with lower than expected results from the Fishery Agency. Why is this news is beyond me except for the fact that the source is In English.

Unemployment numbers are based on ILO standards. If people are going to make an assertion that Japan's numbers are understated, offer some proof for a change.

No Mr.Bird. This isn't about a Japanese company not being able to accept a European approach. Kikukawa was just being diplomatic when he cited cultural difference as a factor when in fact, it was just a case where an individual just went on a power trip.

When the Board required you to work in Japan for 80% of the time, you abide by it. When you want to implement you directives, you turn to the individuals who are one step beneath you which are usually Dept heads. You don't try to drastically cut R&D which is the core foundation of the company without consulting with the board. This isn't cultural. The only cultural aspect that was seen here is that he wasn't given a pink slip like most US/Europeans companies would have done.

If the goal of the tax increase is to reduce the number of smokers, then by all means go for it. If the goal is to increase tax revenues, history has shown that increase in tax resulted in lower tax revenues. I'm afraid LDP is right about this issue.

    Smith,

If you're worried about the long term health effects, Setagaya is 16th in terms of average life expectancy.

Let's review the government bodies that were involved in this recent incident.

Setagaya ward officials, Metropolitan Police Department, and Monkasho who tested the bottles.
The ministry that is responsible for Fukushima Daiichi is NIISA which is under METI. The Ministry that is responsible for health and well being of the citizens are MHLW.

Setagaya Ward top is Hosaka who had in April told in public that Japan should move towards removing nuclear power. Right after that, Ishihara, went on to ridicule Hosaka's said statement. Bear in mind that Metropolitan Police Department is under Ishihara. On top of that, Ishihara is well known to criticize the Ministries in Kasumigaseki. Finally, it is also common knowledge that each ministries aren't very fond of each other for they would would like to see them fall flat on their faces.

Hence, if this was indeed a coverup as some people here have suggested, Hosaka, Ishihara, Monkasho, METI, And MLHW are in on it.

The very same board that selected him had to get rid of him so quickly. What does that tell you?

The Board of Directors, especially Kikukawa made the wrong choice.

From reading various sources (Nikkei, mostly), it appears he attempted to drastically cut R&D expenses which didn't sit well with others. In addition, Kikukawa stated that the agreement was for him to be in Japan 80% of the time but turns out he was only there 40%. And as others have alluded to, instead of giving directives to the managers, he gave them straight to the subordinates.

With all due respect, your comments are based solely on what you perceive in U.S. With very limited knowledge on Japan.

In Japan, enrolling emplyees into kousei nenkin is mandatory under the law if the employer is houjin (法人). In the US, the enrollment of such pension as 401K is not mandatory but is used by employers as an incentive to keep their current employees and to hire new ones.
