There is already a system in place where the employer matches the emplyee's contribution at approximately 8% each. It's called kousei nenkin.

Over 32 million are enrolled from approximately 57 million employed. Hence, your "99% of the companies cannot offer pension" sounds appears to be inaccurate.

Because since Fukushima we suddenly have an elevated interest in measuring radiation, so lots more people with geiger counters and other detectors running around measuring their neighborhoods, and we have a media that thrives on reporting such things to feed on the hysteria and paranoia such as that displayed by many of the comments here?

    Unagidon

If I may add, there appears to be reports of hot spots by "citizens groups" as well.

This is case where the group reported 5.81 microsiverts on the 12th and when the city official checked the same location, it was measured at 0.91 microsievers.

Anyone who eats rice from that region is simply out of their mind. For one, how can you possibly trust the officials as we all know they have outright lied to us on countless issues since 3-11 (No Meltdowns! Impossible! Ok, 3 meltdowns...).

    Because they're different "officials".

Prefectural government =/= Kasumigaseki. To best describe their relationaship, they're like cats and dogs.

And for your information, the "likelihood" of a meltdown was announced by Edano as early as March 13th.

Note to Japan: these are talks on denuclearization, NOT the abduction issue. So please save bringing that up for bilateral discussions with the North. Good luck to both nations and the US in getting them back to the table.

Note to Smith: That's what Japan has been doing all this time. At least now you acknowledge the fact that there are separate working groups among the six nation talks.

    Progress!!

I don't know which bonds you are talking about but the ones issued during the wartime became worthless after the war because of the inflation. There was no "default" in that case.

Nigelboy, I recently saw something quite different to what you are saying and shall need to look around to find it.

And the link I provided also gives translated articles of how the anti-whaling supporters used threats, coersion, and monetary payments to nations to support their stance. It also states that some of these nations appointed Commissioners who were not even citizens of the country they were representing.

    http://luna.pos.to/whale/iwc_vb.html

The fundamental problem in your argument is that there are in fact many nations who received substantial aid from Japan who voted against St. Kitts Declaration. Secondly, those who voted against St. Kitts Delcaration without Japan's aid are all "developed" nations. Thirdly, those "poor" nations who voted for St. Kitts Delcaration have received aids from those "developed" nations as well. Hence, the articles you cite is just pure allegations with weak arguments to support it.

Than shows some facts to support why whaling should continue and that Japan has not been using a loophole to do its whaling.

When the IWC specifically states that a state can condcut research and harvest those materials for consumption, it is not a "loophole". It can only be a "loophole" when the convention doesn't state what to do with those harvested samples. The only "loophole" I see in the IWC is allowing states to join the Convention who are not interested in the "orderly development of the whaling industry". This goes for both anti and pro whaling nations that entered since the 80's.

The issue resurfaced in South Korea in August when the Constitutional Court ruled it unconstitutional for the Seoul government to make no specific effort to settle the matter with Tokyo.

    False.

The issue resurfaced in South Korea in August when the Constitutional Court ruled it unconstitutional for the Seoul Government to make no specific effort to settle the matter PERIOD.

In other words, it's up the Korean government to pay compensation to these so-called comfort women.

Member countries of IWC have been bribed and it is, as I earlier posted quite easy to follow. The 22 countries that have received financial aid from Japan are all on Japan's side. The countries that have received no aid are opposed. You do the math for yourself.

The math indicates that those who voted against received aid from Japan as well.

    http://www.mofa.go.jp/mofaj/gaiko/oda/shiryo/kuni/10_databook/pdfs/05-42.pdf http://www.mofa.go.jp/mofaj/gaiko/oda/shiryo/kuni/09_databook/pdfs/08-06.pdf http://www.mofa.go.jp/mofaj/gaiko/oda/shiryo/kuni/10_databook/pdfs/06-23.pdf <<http://www.mofa.go.jp/mofaj/gaiko/oda/shiryo/kuni/10_databook/pdfs/04-07.pdf>> http://www.mofa.go.jp/mofaj/gaiko/oda/shiryo/kuni/10databook/pdfs/04-07.pdf http://www.mofa.go.jp/mofaj/gaiko/oda/shiryo/kuni/10databook/pdfs/04-07.pdf

Since it appears there is a limit on how many links I can post, Japan has given aid to Argentina, Belize, Brazil, Chile, Czeck Republic, India, Mexico, Oman, Panama, Slovak Republic, and South Africa all whom voted against the St. Kitts declaration. Aid given to India alone overwhelms any aid given to those "22 countries".

"Vote buying" was basically initiated by the anti-whaling nations.

"Dr. Tillman and others claim that, in the years just before the vote on the worldwide moratorium, conservation groups paid some small island nations to join the Commission," he said.

"There was what we called 'common knowledge' that a number of countries joined and that their dues and the travel support was reportedly due to conservation groups providing it," Dr. Tillman stated on the program. Dr. Tillmann was the acting head of the U.S. delegation at many of the IWC annual meetings.

    http://luna.pos.to/whale/iwc_vb.html

In any case, let's put this "vote buying" pi$$sing contest to a rest and focus on the "facts" which is clearly lacking on the anti-whalers side.

Shouldn't be a request. I'm glad they noted that there was yet ANOTHER increase in the deaths of children from the year previous, and in many cases it's because of the ridiculous lack of enforcement on people who don't wear seat-belts (because the government didn't want to seem 'unpopular' by making punishment more severe than a zero fine and one point off a license for a driver who doesn't wear one).

You're "Glad" that JT noted yet another increase in deaths of children from the year previous. Well, it's obvious what their intentions were since they were probably waiting for response like yours.

To put it in perspective, there were 67 deaths of 15 years and younger the same period two years ago. There were 70 last year. An increase of 3 per year. Must be an "EPIDEMIC" that the government must address as a priority. (sarcasm)

Let's dismiss the fact that three years ago, the number was 87. Let's dismiss the fact that 10 years ago, the number was 172. Instead, let's focus on a GROWING TREND for the last two years. (sarcasm)

Nigelboy -- Wow, really? What an insight.

It's really not an "insight". Comparing "developing" countries and "developed" countries are like comparing apples and oranges in terms of economic growth, though I'm not surprised you didn't know the difference based on your past posts.

But, as usual, it misses the point. Japan is not simply a "developed" country, it is a declining one. Steeply declining.

Japan is one of many of the "developed" countries that's declining if you kept up with the news. From Obama's failed economic stimulus (high unemployment rate continue) to EU's debt crisis, the developed countries are facing an enormous hurdle.

And much of the reason it is is because it refused to give up social and economic models better suited for the 1960's than the 2010's. By basically pushing half of its talent pool, women, into a traditional role, it has lost ground competitively in a global economy. And, it is likely too late for that to be turned around, as young women today are still taught it is more important to be kawaii, than brilliant or successful.

Hmmm. Japan is ranked 9th in the recent Global Competetiveness ranking which is three places down from previous year which was 6th. Not great but I wouldn't put too much emphasis on "women in the workforce" as a big factor. Certainly the The World Economic Forum’s Centre for Global Competitiveness and Performance didn't.

And now the developing countries in Asia like China, Vietnam, Cambodia, etc. have replaced Japan as growth markets

Hence the classification difference of "developing countries" and "developed countries".

Today, 48.9% of married women work – many not so much out of career ambition, but rather out of fear that their husbands might lose their jobs.

Interesting. 48.9% of married women work because of fear that their husbands (mostly male between the age 25~64 ) might lose their jobs. Yet the unemployment rate for male between 25~64 is roughly 5%.

I may be off base here but perhaps 48.9% of married women work to "supplement their household income".

ocean it was significantly lower (a mere 7.x if I remember correctly) at Daiichi

a "mere" 7. Thanks. Now, let me change that to, "The cracks along the walls of the reactor building was DEFINITELY to be expected".

This is probably wrong. The cooling systems failed immediately after the earthquake. Whether a continuous operation of the generators would have allowed a fix of the cooling system before the core meltdown started is highly doubtful.

    http://www3.nhk.or.jp/news/genpatsu-fukushima/20110524/2010_gaibudengen.html

What initially compromised were the back up electrity system outside the plant as indicated by the above. Hence, the only source of electricty to operate the cooling system were the back up battery and the diesel generators of which the former operated but ran out and the latter was damaged due to the tsunami.

Japan is not a party to the conflicting claims in the vast South China Sea and its entry into the debate is likely to anger Beijing

What doesn't anger Beijing in regards to South China Sea recently?

Joint U.S.-Australia-Japan South China Sea Drill.

Joint U.S.-Vietnam South China Sea Drill.

Rejection by both Vietnam and Phillipines to discuss bilaterally regarding South China Sea.

Announcement of joint gas development between Vietnam and India.

This news, as innocent as it is written, is the confirmation that not only the cooling systems have been heavily damaged by the earthquake, but the basements as well. Apart from the fact that the legal rules for earthquake resistance of nuclear power plants are by themselves insufficient, the Fukushima Daiichi plant obviously did not even meet the legal requirements in practice. How did this happen? Flawed calculations or simulations? Botched-up construction? Material fatigue due to the age of the plant? These are serious questions for all other plants in Japan.

    ???

I believe it was common knowledge during the first weeks that cooling systems failed and the basement was compromised with sea water. The cracks along the walls of the reactor building was to be expected given the magnitude of the quake but since the workers couldn't get in (high levels of radiation) to fix the leak.

None of this would of been an issue if the back up generator wasn't placed where it could be compromised for all they had to do was fix the leak along the walls (no need for infusing large amounts of water into the reactor, hence no contaminated water buildup inside the reactor building).

Interesting. According to various reports I read, Phillipines refused a bi-lateral discussions with China on this issue recently, preferring to bring this matter to International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea and/or ASEAN summits.

Vietnam, which in the past were enemies with U.S., had U.S.S George Washington station near the coast of Vietnam after three days in which China test ran their first aircraft carrier. Not only that, during some time in August, both Vietnam and U.S. conducted joint military exercize under protest from China. India has also participated in joint exercize with Vietnam this past July. Now, there is report that Vietnam and India are considering joing gas development in South China Sea without China.

Sure, this is important, but the reality is different

I never said it was "important". It's AFP(the source of this particular article) that's claiming this.

    Let's review sfjp330.

“On the other hand, I am concerned about their reinforcement of national defense power, which lacks transparency, and their acceleration of maritime activities,” Noda said.

As you notice, AFP uses quotations as though this is a translated version his own speech.

Now, let's use the original quotes cited by Nikkei, Chunichi, and Kyodo

    日中関係では、来年の国交正常化四十周年を見据えて、幅広い分野で具体的な協力を推進し、中国が国際社会の責任ある一員として、より一層の透明性を持って適切な役割を果たすよう求めながら、戦略的互恵関係を深めます。

Hell. If you don't believe what the Japanese media , here's the actual video (0.42 min in)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_jvi6-eFxpo

"In regards to the Japan-China relations, as next year markes the 40th anniversary of our normalization we hope to engage in specific cooperation in many areas. Recognizing China as a responsible member of the international community, we wish for a proper role with more transprency thereby strengthening our strategic and reciprocal relationship."

Doesn't mention " I am concerned about their reinforcement of national defense power, which lacks transparency, and their acceleration of maritime activities".
