... and in the event of an emergency they'll probably stand around exchanging meishi and/or bickering about who is going to do what, whilst rejecting outside offers of help (eg JAL Flight 123, Kobe, and the sarin attacks.)

Taiko. What part of "Since then" did you not comprehend?

And let's not forget how this all started.

The Education ministry wanted to state the OFFICIAL position of Japan in regards to Liancourt Rocks on their Junior high textbooks including a statement where the said islets are also claimed by Korea.

And then, we have Korea who refused to discuss…

From a legal and human rights point of view, it will be a disaster, simply because most Japanese have their critical faculties removed courtesy of an education system which encourages rote learning rather than critical analysis.

Didn't we have this discussion before when PISA surveyed the academic scores including the…

The word "presumed" is extremely important there, and so many people mistakenly omit it.

Or when jurors omit in their minds the word "reasonable" when we talk about "reasonable doubt". (i.e. OJ Simpson)

So hopefully Japan has learnt from the past.

    Yes.

PM Murayama was heavily criticized for his slow response in dispatching the SDF during the Kobe earthquake.

Since then, rescue units such as Interprefectual Emergency Rescue Unit, Hyper Rescue Unit, and 緊急消防援助隊 (Emergency Fire Rescue Unit) were established

Can't say that it has been effective. But then again, which nation has been effective?

Why couldn7t they have just mentioned that the Islands were disputed and leave it at that?

Just to add, the education ministry did in fact proposed to do that. But Korea complained anyways.

It's tragic that Japan has to go an d be totally stupid, making such a mention of the disputed islands in school textbooks. Why couldn7t they have just mentioned that the Islands were disputed and leave it at that? Why did they have to go and claim possession of the…

nigelboy, Korea has tons of maps and old records to prove Dokdo belongs to Korea and that's undisputable. Japan must realize playing their childish textbook game with false information won't do a damn good.

False. Korea has no maps/documents of such sort regarding Liancourt Rocks prior to 1905. The maps/documents…

    Bottom line.

Korea doesn't have any maps or documents describing the location of current Takeshima/Dokdo before Japan's incorporation 1905. They simply didn't know about it.
