@niegelboy, I never had a chance to get back to you sooner until now. I am talking about the sovereign debt/GEP ratio here. I thought about writing about my own economic theory but it may cause more confusing, so here is a good post you may want to read.

The problem is that's all you talk about without really analyzing the overall factors.

Even the author you cited only gives a scenario where interest rates spike but never go into detail of why interest rates would spike. Interest rates would spike if the demand is going down but that's not the case since the demand is still there despite the low interest rates. This all goes back to Japan's real problem which is a deflationary spiral. Financial insitutions aren't lending so they have these excess cash which they choose to invest in JGB. If Japan can somehow get out of this funk, this will lead to more consumption, which leads to more lending, which will lead to more tax revenues and less reliance on JGB. The money is there. The problem with it is that it's just sitting there with nowhere else to go. This is different from Greece, Italy, or Spain.

However, from the underwriting perspectives, it does not matter.

How so? Please be specific because you're float words like "bankruptcy" and I just don't see it.

The high domestic ownership and the willingness to buy these debts are low rates simple means that any increase/decrease in the debt is basically net sum zero in Japan's balance sheet.

I guess many posts here oppose any tax hikes. Japan has tried everything in the past 20 years that all failed; GDP growth, public spending cut, now you have a new problem with Tohoku disaster and sovereign debt/gdp ratio (233.1%).

Rather than focusing on one ratio, you probably need to look at various other factors to ease your mind. (low interest rates, excess cash holdings by financial institutions, personal financial assets 1400 trillion yen, CDS, domestic ownership %, etc)

As signers of the Hague Convention on Jurisdiction and Foreign Judgments in Civil and Commercial Matters under the Hague Conference on Private International Law, Japan and the U.S.A. have the recognized right to sue organizations in each others countries.

I don' think it has to go that far. Diversity in jurisdiction in which one of the parties is a U.S. entity while the other is foreign entity kind of automatically gives the federal court jurisdiction of this case.

The PLAN is garbage. Just like everything else China produces.

Reminded me of their "new" Aircraft Carrier which lacks arresting cables. I wonder how they got that solved.

@nigelboy, please tell me why US decided to leave Korean penninsula the way it is while General MacAuther wanted to go all the way? Why did US decided to leave Vietnam? Why US is having problems in Afganistan and Pakistan?

Do any of those conflicts had Security Treaty in place? There is a reason why there are so many U.S. bases in Japan. There is reason why Japan hosts a U.S. aircraft carrier. There is a reason why U.S. was able to engage in those conflicts (Operation whatever) and it's all based on a single document. Now the question is, is U.S. willing to lose all of these by not adhering to the Treaty? I doubt it but IMHO, Senkaku scenario is an ideal litmus test for how far U.S. will go to protect Japan's interest. If U.S. does not assist, it basically proves the right (like Ishihara's dad) that Japan needs to remilitarize once again and will no doubt silence the left wing nuts, thereby enabling the once silent and non commital Japanese populance to favor the view of the former.

Sorry smith. As Ossan alluded to, China won't take the risk simply because they would of done so if they could. That is proven in South China Sea. And please. Why do you underestimate the JMSDF?? It's neck and neck with China with Japan having superior technology while PLA having more stuff.

If Japan builds a base there, there will be less intrusion from the Chinese. Ishihara is right on this one.

If your hometown is a major metropolitan city on the West Coast, your 30 minute local news will not cover this. First, they have to report the daily murders. Perhaps an armed robberies which involves several victims. Then comes the national and local politics. By then, it's time for sports and weather.

Now, care to answer why this incident was reported Nationally in Japan??

    Note to tkoind2

There is a reason why this incident made national news including NHK news. Conversely, there is a reason why such similar incident will never be reported nationally or even locally for that matter in your country. Think about it and then get off your high horse.

    Thank you.

I believe if the current security agreement has to be tested in terms of interpretation, Senkaku would be a good scenario since no one is living there. If U.S. doesn't act, more power to the Japanese conservatives and the right for they prefer to see Japan increase her military spending and increase presence as opposed to relying on U.S.

    Smith,

Please do some research on the Tokyo Trials and Nuremburg Trials. Compare them especially what the accused were charged of and found guilty of.

    Smith,

You do realize that U.S.-Japan Security Agreement emcompases Senkaku, right?

There is more risk to China by testing if U.S. will act on it's agreement.

They still are, and many Japanese really believe it. Knowing what happened in the past and understanding those events is the most important way to prevent it from happening again.

It hasn't happenned for over 65 years with not a single civilian killed by the hands of the Japan's military. Perhaps it's safe to say that Japan has reflected herself very well which is recognized by majority of the world nations.

Even in this Naking issue, Japan has contrasting views with scholars positioned in totally opposite sides. Hence, to simply label or characterize the entire population based on actions of a few is weak.

Finally, when people talk about Japan's past actions, they seem to always bring up the German's example when the situation is completely different. For instance, Japan was guilty more so for conducting aggressive war against the Allieds while Germany was guilty more for violating crimes against humanity. Hence, the apologies and reparations were given to individual states by Japan, while Germany were given to individual groups, per se. furthermore, since Japan was more eager to resolve this issue immediately after the war, their entrance to U.N. (1956) was much faster than that of Germany which gained entrance during the time when Japan almost completed the payment of reparations.

Actually, there is no physical evidence to support the Chinese claims of this massacre.

Don't need physical evidence to prove it's a "massacre".

"Massacre" refers to killing of civilians, intentional or unintentional, by the Axis. Similar actions conducted by the Allieds are not "Massacre" for they are the winners. (Tokyo Aerial bombings, Battle of Okinawa, Bombing of Dresden, etc.)

Interesting thing about Japan is that nobody complain about it.

If nobody complained about it, it wouldn't be a scandal. If nobody complained about it, there wouldn't be any need for so much resignations in the past.

Will people starve without this whale meat? I doubt it.

No. But you can say that for other protein food as well. From an environmental balance standpoint, it makes sense to utilize sources that are sustainable.

We live in the world where most all food items are somewhat contaminated with aflatoxin, hormones, irradiation, residual chemicals, etc. Simply singling out mercury while ignoring others has been the norm for anti-whalers. Furthermore, if you're worried about mercury contents, you should be more concerned about the whales caught in local areas as opposed to Minke whales caught in Southern Oceans for they are virtually minimal in terms of mercury contents.

Have you watched, or read or even heard of any of the National Whaling Conferences in which every country attends and discusses the current situation?

There is no such thing is "National Whaling Conferences". Do you mean IWC? If so, not every country attends it for not every country is a member. Furthermore, if you are referring to the IWC, your statement that the "large portion of the world said no" is completely false.

Within weeks of the world’s worst nuclear crisis since Chernobyl, TEPCO dumped more than 10,000 tons of low-level radioactive water into the Pacific.

A quick reminder of the harmful effects of this past action.

"To put this in perspective, the Pacific Ocean holds about 300 trillion swimming pools full of water, and they are going to release about five swimming pools full," said Timothy Jorgensen, chair of the radiation safety committee at Georgetown University Medical Center. "So hopefully the churning of the ocean and the currents will quickly disperse this so that it gets to very dilute concentrations relatively quickly."

It doesn't even amount to a "drop in a bucket".
