DXXJP, don't be so upset. Japanese is a dieing language. You would think that everyone here, with 6 years of English could understand simple English, but most of you can't. So, if a westerner comes here, and tries to learn Japanese from the same system, even simple Japanese would be a waste of time because people here don't know how to teach language. If they did, people here would speak English. So the guy in the Chemical company just didn't want to waste his time with Japanese lessons taught by people how have no clue on how to teach language. To this day it amazes me that people learn Hiragana first... Not Katakana. Katakana is used everywhere and every western person with a strong Katakana pratice could understand almost every menu sign etc in Tokyo. Hiragana is only for Japanese words and when you go out having positive reinforcement by understanding things immediately would encourage people to learn more. I recommend everyone to learn Katakana the first week they are here. Basically you will learn how to miss-pronounce every English word you know. After you unlearn how to pronounce things in Japanese, your life would be wonderful. Then take it slow. Example. I would like a beer. Biru kudasai. Send me an email. Maru kudasai. Lets go to the supermarket. supamaketo ikimasho. Salad please. Saredo kudasai See.... learning can be fun.

If there was a FREE Version of the app available I would consider trying it, but only paid apps with no free versions are just money hungry. Also I heard that you can buy it and then return it anytime for 30 days. Thought about doing this, but didn't after I learned that the company still must pay Apple their cut of the profit, even if there was none. So, I'll wait until a free version is available.

I went to the BK near my office for the first time this week. Ordered a Whopper without Mustard. It took them 5 minutes to understand I wanted Mustard off of it. (And I was speaking Japanese.) After 2 meetings etc. They wrote it down and walked it back to the cook. After 10 minutes I got my burger. I can't imaging that BK got that big in American with this quality of service. Isn't their motto... "We do it your way".... Well not here in Japan. Robots can't talk to you to get it your way.

Facebook features Friends. Twitter focuses on content. Japanese having very limited social networks won't flock to facebook. They flock to content. That said, I feel sorry for Japanese people due to the face they really don't have real friend nor the ability to make them. Had one person actually say she would get tired to consonantly only chat with friends. She wants to be anonymous online and not followed.

emotionless faces, repetitive movements practiced billions of times so to attain nearly perfection, being cut out of everything for one mistake so that others with nearly perfect abilities can proceed unchallanged.... anyone wonder why Japanese are good at this?

Debucho, Most countries in the world have two languages to include everyone. English/Spanish and a mother tongue. The same thing could be said that why don't Japanese speak one additional language. Even in a large part of America kids for the last 20 years have been learning a second language in school. Enough to at least communicate.
This is a really good story. Had a friend bought up 4 houses in Nagano last year. He is renting them out in the winter to foreigners who visit for skiing. He got them all for under a half a million dollars.

"employees could enter the information later in the evening" EXACTLY. Softbank Service Sucks. To signup it took me nearly 2 hours. And where is any information regarding costs, plans, etc? Can't find them anywhere. If I am on a 2 year plan are they allowing the upgrade for free like AT&T in the US? I don't think so.

They are all often caught sleeping on the job. In fact I would say most companies in Japan it is ok to sleep. I had one job that they actually made an announcement to wake up. Japanese culture. Who's going to fight it.
