alpha, the geographical positioning of Okinawa means that it is an isolated Japanese island of substantial area for attacking forces to build a bridgehead for a later attack on the mainland. An initial attack anywhere on the Japanese mainland would result in heavy losses for anyone attacking Japan until they firmed-up a base. Hokkaido could also be targeted as a bridgehead, but it is would be way too close to Japan's mainland forces and therefore Okinawa is perfect strategically. And please read my full sentence regarding the reason why China, North Korea and Russia have left Japan alone for 65 years. I said it was because of the presence of the US military all over Japan (including the 15,000 in Okinawa) and the political and military fallout it would cause with the US if anyone attacked Japan. If the Chinese or the North Koreans attacked Okinawa, they would be attacking the US as well.

Whilst I am personally unhappy with the continued plight of people in Okinawa (the way they were left by the Japanese government to suffer at the end of WWII and the continuing US military presence), Okinawa's geographical position makes is strategically crucial to the military defence of Japan. And those 15,000 US servicemen have been the reason why China, North Korea and Russia have avoided military conflict with Japan since 1945. We all know that 15,000 US servicemen cannot fight a war with any of the three countries mentioned, but the very fact that the US has a substantial presence in Japan has scared-off the likes of China, North Korea and Russia. At present an attack on Japan would also mean an attack on the US. If the US military were made to leave then Japan would be left to fend on it's own. Also, 15,000 troops are certainly enough to put up a fight for long enough before the cavalry arrive.

Proof that FIFA is a corrupt organisation absolutely not interested in running soccer in a fair manner and totally open to political bribery. It is beyond me how they find time to make a visit to the White House whilst not visiting all of the US facilities.
Proof that FIFA suddenly turns blind in the face of abuses of human rights (of it's own Chinese people) and abuses of international borders (Tibet).

Burakumin, these warmup games are exactly that. The results mean nothing and players are not going to risk injuries 2 weeks before a World Cup. New Zealand beating Serbia in a warmup match means nothing. Serbia would easily defeat New Zealand in a competitive game without breaking sweat. Only the minor nations (New Zealand, Japan) think these practice matches mean anything. Save your bucks and stick them on the Netherlands winning the World Cup instead.

Let me see now. Very hot Japanese model chick who you don't need to give up all of your time to because your globetrotting F1 career gives you an instant excuse just to sleep with her when you have the free time, and you end that relationship ?? Is he serious ??

What a joke. This took how long ? 2 weeks ? As expected, half a job just to keep the media happy. Despite the fraud and bribery discovered in Germany and other European leagues, plus the Champions League, they think a 2 week investigation (yeah right) is anywhere enough time to unravel anything.
To say what ? They discovered fraud and bribery in their own jurisdictions of Spain and Russia !

England versus Japan mate. There are only 2 teams involved in one game of football.
Psychologically Japan are much smaller than England, who are a big team, and the English players are stronger physically.

Easy solution. Get the station staff or cops to block entry through the ticket gates to anyone who is too hammered to walk straight. Allowing extremely drunk people to walk into your train station is asking for trouble and lacks responsibility for safety regulations. Train stations are not public places, they are privately owned.

And I must say that hosefella has written the most stereotypical, prejudiced nonsense thus far. Automatically labelling non-Japanese posters here with Roppongi. Utter nonsense.

And sadly hoserfella, some posters are too stupid or ignorant to realise that we are not thrown into some big pot labelled 'foreigners', but we each represent our own nationality. I do not represent 'foreigners'. If you imagined the scenario in this story and labelled the guy as a foreigner then you are looking through very prejudiced eyes indeed.

hosefella, in no way have I condoned this guys behaviour. And there is a very good chance that there may be domestic abuse at home (I did not say that this guy does not abuse his partner at home). But I am ridiculing this very poor piece of 'journalism' (I use the word lightly) as stereotyping westerners, Japanese and the couple that Melissa Feineman thinks she knows so well but actually only ever caught a passing glance of one weekend whilst in Ebisu Garden Place.
I am challenging Melissa Feineman's ludicrous assumption (obviously she has not lived in Japan for too long) that this guys public show of anger is embarrassing amongst the so-called perfect and well mannered society in Japan. Just read the news. There is a huge amount of domestic violence here in Japan that goes on in secret at home and not in public.
Maybe Melissa Feineman would prefer that we all keep our ('western') domestic violence behind closed doors and pretend in public that everything is well. By the way, I find it very insulting that Melissa Feineman assumes that people from certain areas in the UK and the US are likely to be 'wife beaters'. How did Japan Today let that statement pass the editorial ?

Whilst it is very unpleasant to see somebody's partner lose their temper in public, especially when with a young child. Don't you think it is really none of our business to write about it ? And how do you know what caused the public rage in the first place ? Maybe his 'wife' (this journalist makes a lot of assumptions in her article) did something that justified his anger.
Now for the stereotyping. What you will find is that the big difference between domestic issues in the west and domestic issues in Japan, is that (as witnessed in Ebisu Garden Place) westerners will be very open about their anger or stress. Even if it means embarrassment in public. What you find in Japan is plenty of domestic violence that is hidden away and not spoken about. Your so-called polite society (on the surface) has plenty of violence suffered by partners going on under the well-mannered surface.
As for the accusation that people from 'wherever in Northern England' or 'wherever in the US' are the kind of people who are likely to cause abuse, that statement speaks for itself.

bobo, Melissa Jacobs abused her position, as someone who had met Triesman through his political work in government, to set him up with a secretly taped conversation. It was deceptive and dishonest. Especially since it was set up by an English newspaper and an English PR guru. I expect my private conversations to be just that, and not secretly taped for a newspaper story. It should be illegal and discarded as irrelevant.
