Goodness me. When some people get upset because their elected political leader bows to a Japanese emperor then you really do have issues.
I imagine that these kind of people would vote in favour of colour segregation on the buses and in restaurants.

Why are we bothering with this long drawn-out procedure ? This is taxpayers money and it is frustrating for the Hawker family who have suffered for long enough. It should be simple. Lindsay Hawker's body was found in Ichihashi's apartment. Ichihashi was the last person to be seen with her. Ichihashi went on the run for two and a half years. Ichihashi changed his appearance and his name. They should give him a deadline until 31st December to answer their basic questions (how did Lindsay Hawker's body appear in his apartment/ why did he run away for so long/ why did he change his identity) or they should charge him in court for murder. Give the jury the circumstantial evidence and tell the jury that he is refusing to cooperate and answer any questions. That'll get him and his lawyers talking pretty soon I can tell you.
All this taking the fifth nonsense (and this includes the soldier suspected of the hit and run in Okinawa) is rubbish. If you are innocent then you should put your defence on the record in front of your lawyer. If you refuse to say anything with your lawyer present then you should be put away.

Seeing glimpses of him here and when they put him in the police car at Tokyo eki, it begs the question. Does Ichihashi really look any different to how he looked when he escaped two and a half years ago ?

Yes it's true that the only way to get people helping out these days is to offer a financial reward, and that may have been a reason for these people to spill the beans, but Burakumin has a good point and we shouldn't really take the mickey. If Japanese society had principles about catching criminals like Ichihashi, then he may well have been a busted a long time ago by whoever helped him to escape from Chiba and by the construction company. He may well have been on the run for so long because a couple of people felt they didn't need to shop him.

It's a no-brainer, as highlighted by WilliB. Without the photo from the cosmetic clinic Ichihashi would have strolled straight through Osaka port and onto the ferry for Okinawa. He may well have got his new passport as well. The idiot at the construction company who lived with Ichihashi for a year would not have realised anything.

The assistant at the cosmetic surgery should get the lot (it wasn't the surgeon, but an assistant who saw his photo). If it weren't for the clinic assistant letting us all know what Ichihashi looked like now, neither the construction employee (lived and worked with Ichihashi for over a year !) nor the ferry terminal guy would have known who he was and Ichihashi would not have been caught this week.
