badge123 said: No country owns Antarctica or any parts of it. They can only claim parts of it, and Australia's claim is only recognized by four countries . Antarctic territorial claims are not recognized by most countries, including Japan.
Thats interesting, seeing as Japan is a signatory of the Antarctic Treaty, which regulates international relations regarding Antarictica, and is of course tied to all territorial claims. Fair enough though to excercise jurisdiction on board a vessel.
Japan has no claim itself, and could never make one as it would be ridiculous coming from a country which is ten times closer to the arctic, in the opposite hemisphere of the planet. The fact that Japan signed the treaty, is more likely to do with that the treaty is made to maintain the antarctic region as a place for scientific research, but you think as a signatory that they would respect the sentiments of the claim holders. Japan wormed its way in where it doesnt belong on the treaty, just on the sientific interest part. Fair enough for the legitimate scientific research, but the researching of the whales flavour is really stretching it.
It is a blatant example of Japans insensitivity to those with territorial claims, who despite having them, have agreed not to excercize 'ownership' of the territory, but rather to act as custodians. Japan barges in and does what it wants, regardless of what those claim holders/custodians would say. It is simple defiance of popular opinion, bloody-mindedness, insensitivity to anything that isnt themselves, and hypocracy in so many ways.
They are only getting away with this through a loophole, and doing it with a smirk on thier face. It is so obvious they are doing it for food, and for money, when they are neither poor or starving, and all through a "scientific research" loophole. That loophole should be slammed shut, so that they can not twist the rules to suit themselves anymore. The only way to stop them is for people to try and get the clause that they are abusing to be ammended.
The best part of it will be when noone has to listen to, or read about this whole drama anymore. If only Japan would just piss off out of there and stop treading on everyones toes just for some NASTY tasting meat, and to line the pockets of a small minority.

Because Japanese show business is so bad and talentless, the public need to be told who is good and who to watch. Bamboohat is right, its just advertising.

Pivot: give me a set of claws and sharp teeth to even out the odds and I"ll give it a go. Point is, didnt have to shoot it. One or two people could have tranquilized it and carried it out. They need a nation park service, or wildlife control or something, rather than calling in a recreational hunting club. It hadn't hurt anyone and it should have been fine to just relocate it. I'm curious weather these bears are approaching endangered in number yet? There can't be many places to live left for them.

haha, they look nice in those kimonos, and I bet its a fun challenge to get them off. I know you all must be vehement non-smokers, but don't you know that Japanese women smoke to make them more attractive to the Japanese man? They start smoking because they know they would nag thier heavy smoker japanese mate into leaving if they didn't share the same unfortunate passtime.

They should make some shows about people ( not just good looking women) who are struggling and floundering within a restrictive society. Each episode should critique some of the current social ills in Japan, and foster open discussion. Each star can be either a positive role model for the working poor, or a baddie who none want to be like. Mind you, at least these shows are an improvement on all the variety/ cooking/travel shows. I'm so sick of seeing the same pathetic faces on every channel talking about the same thing and squealing UMAII, or KAWAII, or YABAIIII.

When comparing this to chinese food contamination scares, most Japanese would just say 'hmm' and carry on. In other words, they wouldn't see a case of the pot and the kettle here at all. There will be no mass panic over Japanese made products being unsafe, no matter how many scandals there are. Japanese only panic about the outside world infringing upon them. That Tokugawa guy has a lot to answer for.

Way to go SouxGirl for calling it like it is. Medievaltimes: SO how about 35yo guy with a 20yo woman? Still a paedophile? A woman wont change much physically from 17 to 20 in most cases, although mentally and psychologically that may be different. How about 18 and 35? 19 and 35? Which arbitrary number will appease your self proclaimed medieval thinking process? All told, on duty, in the police car, Im more concerned with his abuse of power, and with his not being out fighting crime, with his other nightstick.

I didnt say you are old enough mentally to be having sex, but if you are biologically ready to reproduce, you are no longer a girl, you have become a woman. And therefore have the responsibility that comes with the ability to bear children, to both your own body and to the child. And nodame...thats sounds like a freak occurance, which has nothing to do with this story. Maybe you didn't notice teh ages of the "girls" in this story, 30, 23....not girls. Don't know where you came up with the word incest from, no incest mentioned here either, maybe you meant paedophilia, well, there are no children in this story except the ones abandoned on the floor of a cafe. Why do people feel the need to over-react to a single sentance without understanding it, or the preceding sentences before they rattle off reactionary garbage?

In a country supposedly worried about a dropping birth rate, you'd think they would make it free, easy, and safe for giving birth. For a "hospital" to turn away a pregnant woman in labour should be criminal. It amounts to throwing a harmless baby to the wolves, not to offer to help. The selfishness lies not only with the woman who would drop a sprog on the floor then read a manga like laa dee da, but with a society that would see only thier own inconvenience/expense, before the needs of a baby about to enter the world. That includes the hospitals, and the government.

go go gadget shoes!!!! These will probably be able to power anything with aa batteries...theres gonna be a whole new range of sex toys with adapter built into them...or hell, why not built a vibro into the shoes themselves. They could also harvest the static electricity of synthetic pants legs rubbing together.
