Thanks for that post societymike, on both points. Yes, the actual topic here is the 2nd Nigerian. I have to wonder if he was excessively troubled because of the other Nigerian, or if he too was a whacko. The article is no help in making that determination.

HonestDictator: As for the sex offense he was penned for in 2001 he was still over between 20-21, which makes him no longer a minor, and considered responsible for his actions.

Look dude, I don't mind people being held responsible for their actions. In fact, what I am pointing to is the idea that society also has to take responsibility for ITS actions. If society makes love a crime, there will be bad results. My trouble with you is, you think only one person should be held responsible for that.

Considering his sexual offense risk is listed as "High" not "low" or "medium" shows he did something pretty extreme the first time around,

Most probably true. And if so I would have had no problem with a life sentence for him. Seriously, I have no problem with people taking responsibility. I have a problem with what you expect people to be fairly punished for. I would rather all statutory so-called "rapists" of teenagers were free to walk, and all hardcore real rapists sat in prison for life regarless of age. Seriously.

SuperLib:OK. Any tips on how we're going to stop THAT? It would seem the only way to do it would be to literally strip search the guy.

Sniffer dogs. I would not mind being sniffed by a dog, but I really hate taking my shoes off and having to hold them with all my other things. Also, not being able to take water is extremely annoying. And so is having to ensure my tiny pocket knife made it into my checked baggage.

What I do find amusing is the same group of people who claim security laws are like a gulag are the first to criticize airport authorities for not stopping a guy that literally would take gulag methods to do so.

As someone criticizing such methods, I never once criticized any authorities about the fact that the guy made it on the plane. There will always be a risk to flying, and outside of some general checks, I actually don't expect much from the authorities. When I fly, I keep my eyes open, and plan to do everything I can to save myself, because no matter what, there is no way all risk can be eliminated by the authorities anyway.

What I find incredible is people nodding at every single security measure imagined, no matter how useless it is, so that they can "feel" secure on a flight.

ProfJuanColePhd: Oh my, this really must stop. Your crude misrepresentation of something as complicated as 9/11 and your talk of invasions and military takeovers is too much. It is disgusting the way you equate things as willy-nilly as is convenient for you at the time.

What is really disgusting is your declaration of the short posts here to be simplistic and crude (mis)representations. Space is limited professor. Also disgusting is your criticism without presenting your own viewpoint for examination. One might even call it cowardly.

And in case you don't realize, I am not the one who suggested Afghanistan should have been invaded sooner.

ProfJuanColePhd: Oh my. Such simplistic thinking, and your moralizing ( the Taliban are "evil" ) coupled with those violent urges about "containing" them.

How does "contain" conjure up violent connotations in your mind professor? Especially considering the other options aleady in progress?

And unless you would like me to write you a book, I am afraid all you are going to get from posts here are going to seem simplistic. Well, unless you have the gift of extrapolation. I guess you don't. Kill all the Taliban, contain them, or defeat them militarily, I am afraid that no one has suggested anything that a limited mind could not immediately declare "simplistic".

You, sir, are no better than the tiny, tiny handful of misinterpreters of Islam who have given the Taliban such a bad name. Your ideas have handed them credibility, and I would even go so far as to say you have handed them one of our soldiers.

First, how have I misinterpreted Islam? Second, as my ideas are not being generally employed, how have they handed the Taliban credibility?

SuperLib: Pretty creative. I suppose one could say that a cop sometimes shoots and kills people, so in reality they're no different from a criminal.

Add the caveat that the cop is outside of his juristiction shooting criminals that committed no crime in his juristiction, and you might have something. But no surprise that you just casually disregard inconvenient points like that.

That's the situation that happened in Afghanistan before 9/11. We knew it was an open playground for terrorist groups but we did nothing about it.

This suggests that 9/11 would not have happened if only we had done something about Afghanistan sooner. You seem to be somewhat ignorant of where the 9/11 terrorists lived, trained, and where they came from and also how they could pull off what they did. It is true that Afghan was a major place of training, but how special of a place do you need to train to brandish box cutters? The most important training took place right in the U.S. of A., the flight training, done with visas gotten as early as 1999. And where did all the hijackers come from? All from Saudi Arabia and one from UAE. In other words, invading Saudi might have done more to prevent 9/11. In fact, a military take-over of the U.S. might have! The role of Afghanistan in 9/11 was not minor, but it was not paramount either. So why the hell are we there again?

HonestDictator: if you can't tell the difference between trying to support and build up a nation by trying to give them a stable government platform to work up from, compared to a group of rabid religious fanatics that behead, beat, murder people because of their supposed religious law, as well as ignoring

I can see the difference, but its not the point. Afghanistan is their land, not ours. And it being their land, what hope do we have of winning? We have nothing to lose, and them, everything. They won't quit. They CAN'T. They don't actually have a place to go, with the exception of Pakistan. Its much like the Viet Cong swimming through Cambodia.

And you accuse me of ignoring things? I never thought of the Taliban as anything but a necessary evil to be contained because they cannot be eliminated no matter how much you dream. And here we are 8 years later and they are as strong as ever. Your ideas have handed them credibility, and one of our soldiers.

HonestDictator: Leggs is an adult and knows when he's doing something wrong.

Leggs has not been found guilty yet.

Grasping at straws there Numbskull. Registered sex offenses can range from what you have stated as minor offenses, to sexual assault, rape, etc.

So first you say that I am grasping at straws but then you say that what I said is entirely possible? Ooooookie doki.

Wolfpack, its not just what Dick said, but what he said in response to me. That response looks to me like it takes issues with the numbers problem I pointed out. Had he not addressed it directly to me, I would have had nothing to say to his post.

Foxie: I didn't realize it was that easy getting into North Korea. They must tighten their security.

That would ruin the black market and North Koreans would starve. That loose border is how many people survive the insanity of that country.

Anyway, with a name like Park this moonbat can probably blend in. Good luck with that letter!

No, the article mentions "sex acts" and "obscene acts". It does not say they had sex, and if they had, I am not aware that its generally fatal or harmful, although there is that potential among the ignorant.

I ask you again: what bad thing did you think was going to happen?

cliffworks: sex offenders should have thier crime tattoed across the forehead.

The problem is that if his prior sex offense was statutory rape, he might have been within the law in another state because 16 is the age of consent in some states, and also because of Romeo and Juliet laws. There was only a four or five year age difference between the two.

As I said in my last post here, such ideas and attitudes may well be making things worse. Punish people so hard who did nothing or only very little wrong, then don't be surprised when they act like hardened criminals.

This rule says "Quick, make a pointless new rule to make it look like we are doing something!" Reminds me of color alerts.

This sort of reactionarism means the terrorists won this round I am afraid.

yabits: The continuing spate of these kinds of incidents is a clear indicator that society is not doing near enough to learn and take resulting actions.

I am inclined to believe that some societies may actually be doing too much Yabits. If the first rape charge was actually consensual but statutory rape, and he was put on a sex offender list for that, imagine living with the stigma and trying to get a date. If his motive was sexual, he may have considered her the only score he was going to get. Then he decided to get rid of the evidence or face a heavy sentence. I know people don't like to hear it, but recall the case that comes right on the heels of this one: the 12 year old prostitute and the repeat offender in Japan arrested just a couple days ago. It seems she is alive and well, and may well be because the guy did not feel he was facing a massive sentence, and you know he was not going to get the life sentence of the sex offender list. If you grip a glass to loosely, it slips from your fingers. But that does not mean its better to grip it with all your might. The result of that will be even worse than dropping the glass.

HonestDictator: There is a line that is drawn that if a person or group of people show that kind of disrespect towards a human being, they need to be eliminated from society.

A Talibani could not have said it better. Its just that his idea of disrespect and yours don't mesh well. Also your ideas of "eliminate" are different. He beheads with his own hands, and you have hired guns looking down bombsights. Its like you are standing in front of a funhouse mirror, pointing a finger at an image, it is pointing back!

cleo: I would have a hard time imagining anyone less antagonistic than a member of the Salvation Army.

Ones from Weirton, WV might be the exception. I used to live near there. I would not be surprised if he told these idiots off. Not that it excuses any of it. I hope those idiots find their karma...very soon.

And poor kids! Out of the frying pan and into the fire. Geez.

I hope the two sub-men who did this trip over their own feet and shoot themselves with their own guns.

    Very sad news for Christmas.

Also, a slightly irresponsible headline. Odds are that he is the culprit, but I believe the headlines usually say something like "suspect arrested". Yes, I know its boring, but trial by media is bad enough as it is.

And rather than label him as a registered sex offender, I think we could just call him an all around bad apple. Rape, assault, and burglary. Sounds like the guy is just a problem in general. But the thing is that the press wants to put "girl" "murder" and "sex" all in one headline whenever remotely possible.

At this moment in time, outside of the al-Qaida connection, this is pretty small pototoes. About the last thing we need is statements and actions from people so high up as to make this appear bigger than it really is. Such a thing would not create calm. It would ensure panic.

Further, the plane orginated in Nigeria. You cannot blame any U.S. authority for not seeing or being able to prevent it. Its the same as Richard Reid, whose flight originated in Paris.
