I'm not saying this is the case here but police DO plant evidence at times. There was a notorious narc in my home town with the nick name Santa Claus because he was known to leave behind little "presents" to be picked up by other narcs. The name was given by other cops, not the druggies. It's amazing this video could be accepted if it's the one I saw, as all there was were two grey blobs morphing into the night. Gimme a break...

Then things have changed and that's of course, good to know. I did my application process in Japanese and already had an Amex card with more than ten years membership, but was refused a Visa card at that time. Must have been the stocking over my head? Kidding...

Years ago, I applied for a Visa card. The woman at the counter was very helpful and positive and guided me through the paper work. She smiled and said she'd jut go over an have everything verified and be back. When she did come back, her expression had changed and she regretted to inform me that it wasn't possible to have a Visa card. She'd of course been told to say no to the foreigner which pissed me off no end I can assure you...

I didn't want to make an issue of it there and then as the woman was most helpful and she also thought it wouldn't have been a problem. Initially at least so I kept on my best behavior.

My retort was this and I advise anyone else to do the same when confronted by this BS. "Show me the rules where it says I can't have one?" They couldn't of course but the incident left such a bad taste in my mouth that I decided to stick with American Express (free plug...)

OK, here we go; round three in this year's pro/con whaling debate.

The point is clear; whaling is about as relevant to the 21 Century as morse code is to IT. It's patently absurd to sail down to 40 degrees, ad further latitude to prop up an industry that not even the Japanese themselves want much. This is all about belligerence in the form of national pride. So be it... Good luck and God bless all the crew of Sea Sheperd.

With a bit of luck they will cause some serious mayhem for the Japanese this time. Quite simple really... Warn them first, then ll one need do is fire poison into the carcasses with 12 guages and they won't be eaten for sure.

Gotta make a buck I suppose but please, leave the jazz alone mate because you're just hopeless at it. Easily the most forgettable jazz vocalist in history by far.

"Asked in late October if his frequenting of expensive hotel bars made him out of touch with the common man, he lost his cool."

This explains the photo op of PM Aso drinking with the students in the pub the other day.. A typical politician's maneuver.

The law changed six or so years ago, making passengers and those that knowingly allow a DD to drive, culpable by default. It's both a good law and sensible. I support it. I don't believe the cops' action had anything to do with the lowlife's predilection to crime

To be sure; a 'nice gesture'. No doubt about it. Great publicity also. Wonder if he'd tried it without the cameramen around? You'll notice all the 'freeters' have security ID tags around their necks. Nice gesture indeed... Yawn.

Very sad. Being a crim. is bad enough but being a crim and a codger is doubly sad. Still, this is in keeping with my overall impression of the Japanese themselves, in as much as they are a remarkable but lonely people.

The malaise of the 21'st Century which is everywhere: loneliness. Empty, utterly worthless platitudes from politicians and silly campaigns offered as some sort of solace. And now the breakdown of family ties and deep sense of obligation, together with social mores which for centuries was the glue that held it all together. All it seems, are now rapidly eroding.

Did the phones have a Kitty chan or Miffy motif in diamonds? If so, the absurdity is complete. Perhaps an idea for the next air-head bimbos that want these.

Guess they've tried 'em all. First, they tried the socialist bogey man lurking in the cupboard, didn't work. Next, the 'terrorist sympathizer'... didn't work either. So would you believe Muslim? Nope, didn't work.

The man has too much brain power and class to devolve into this stupidity. WHen asked what he thought about Pailin's daughter being unwed at 18? Obama could have tried the shrewd; 'no comment' Or some other way to score a few points. So what did he say? 'Hey, my mom had me at 18.' Now that's a classy guy and a clean fighter. As a non American I say congratulations. Well done.

Go ahead, measure the drapes, pick the wall paper you're in and the thinking world welcomes you!

LostinNagoya: I'll find that book and read it for sure. I've read a few titles by HH Dalai Lama and found them of great interest. What irks me is that Tibet's past was not all peace and compassion, far from it. I don't support the Chinese invasion but the rule of thumb by Lamaism was archaic and barbaric without a doubt and many hated it.

Basically, I like the Dalai Lama but we in the West are given an incomplete picture of the Tibet story. This place was never a Shangri-La but a backward theocracy with its own priest police, and that taxed peasants through the roof and did pretty much as they pleased for centuries. the method of control? Fear of the afterlife and deep superstitions. Eye-gouging and amputations were common for tax avoidance. His Holiness doesn't talk about these things as they interfere with the Shangrilan image so loved in the West.
