It's true, gangster groups have a big stake in this dog industry as breeders and sellers. Pups and kittens have best-bought-by dates, and once their shelf life is over and the kawaii factor no longer marketable, to the executioner they do go. Make no mistake.

There's a place near me that snack broads like to gawk at with loaded salarymen in arm and exclaim; 'Awww...hoshii ne!" "Kate kure?" Heitaro salaryman plonks down the 20,000 and the broad takes home the pup. Only to return it the next morning for a cut of the profit. A neat trick.

As an aside, I live in one of the Tosa dogs areas and every once in a while, they hold a traveling fight show in the area. Why the authorities allow this is another of the ongoing mysteries as to why the Japanese do some things. Masquerading under the highly dubious name of 'culture' it's a bloodbath. And quite obviously many Yakuza and their snack/bimbo companion types involved, if the people watching are anything to go by.

If you look ever so carefully and have enough language skills, the side betting can be observed as well. The cages of these dogs are open on only one side and the conditions whilst not filthy, defy description. They're caged right up until they enter the ring. Then the fights are broken up with a lit rolled up newspaper. Some of the most tattered and bloodied ears you'll ever see. Frankly, it's all a pathetic sight.

Cleao: Points taken but it's the unpredictability with the few that scares me.

"There is no such thing as an innately 'nasty' dog, only nasty owners. " What! I hope you're being serious? There are some very 'innately nasty' dogs around and plenty who've been bitten by the same. This is not 101 Dalmatians we're talking about here. Some dogs can just go off like time bombs for no clear reason.

I have to agree. Masuzoe has been pretty impressive, given the sea of muck he has to wade through day after day. Very professional and highly competent.

If there were even half the good samaritans on this board out there, the world would be a pretty nice place. Anyone out there laid down coats in puddles yet? Don't think I've ever read so much self serving-baloney stacked so high in once place, ever...

There's no cultural precedent for this in Japan. Buddhism, for all its hot air and talk of 'compassion' comes up short in the values department in the real world. This is a country that is basically areligious and at the same time amoral. Not that anywhere else is that much different mind you, but it certainly stands out here. Orphanages full of unwanted kids, abortions not much different from a visit to the dentist and divorced couples siblings deliberately isolated for the rest of their lives.

Odd people, just to put it mildly....

teaabe: Good post. I'm just bedazzled by the monstrosities they build in the US. Particularly in Las Vegas which is doubly absurd given the area already has and is due for some horrendous water problems. But no; jacuzzis and 'butler pantries' sic rule. Some of these places would make excellent ski lodges anywhere else and to be fair, I think the same stupid architecture is in other countries as well.

shuuu: A recession it is, granted. But Japan kept its GDP up. Think the US can do it? Doubt it... The US has cut production drastically and with the encouragement of George Bush increased consumption, all financed on credit spending and a basically unregualted stock market. What sure fire scenario for a crash.

He's halfway right. Japan had the same problem when the bubble burst in the late 90s. So what did they do? Slashed the interest rates to almost zero and made two huge cash injections into the economy in '97 and '98. Now what's really interesting is that through the entire period until now, they've kept their GDP from falling.

America on the other hand has cut its production base, yet unwisely increased spending and consumption then funded all this through credit. A sure fire recipe for a crash if ever there was.

I think America has much to learn from Japan's last ten years experience.

So what'll be different? Apart from technology and much less water, not much I'd say. Tribal warfare is what we excel at and have been doing since day one. Muslims will still be intolerant and Afghanistan will still be wracked violence, warlords blasting holes in each other from one side of the country to the other.

Pakistan will still be a basket case and Russia will be the new world power. So why's that Nuts? Because Putin said by 2010 they would be. They have the resources, a resurgent military and growing economy, intelligence and manpower. Europe will be intimidated by the bear like never before. Move over world power USA, Wall street brought you down. Russia is the new kid on the block. Scary times...

notimpressed: Good points, as were Cleo's. There seems to be a tragedy here and it's as much to do with nomenclature as much as events themselves. What do we call an 18 year old following my wife around some years ago, which did actually happen? The guy kept it up every Friday and one time she had the good grace and good sense to stop then walked back to talk with him softly.

It turned out the kid was hopelessly infatuated with her and was acutely embarrassed to find out that she was much older than he'd thought and moreover married. I've always admired her good sense in these matters. God only knows what some posters here would have done to this lad who is no doubt, a father and married himself living happily somewhere now.
