Where on Earth do Americans dig up this paranoia from.? Secret governments, secret plots, conspiracy theories, men in black, covert action against ordinary folk. The country seems full of this garbage. Not a good sign of a country's mental health when half the population it seems, imagine these absurdities.

Oil at $250 a barrel? Good... This will force us perhaps, to take alternative technologies more seriously. A case in point, cars and trucks and even buses running with compressed air engines. can't get any cheaper fuel than air and the prototypes run on a full tank for 270 kilometers. The researchers say LA to NY will be possible on a single tank in a few years. Cost? 2 dollars to fill the tank or around 30 minutes. This will get better and faster as the technology develops. Why haven't we heard of this before? Because big oil doesn't like it, that's why. http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=QmqpGZv0YT4

This has just gotta be the silly season in old Japan? What's the summer gonna be like here? I mean really... 'the Dog man strikes again!' Does he also wield a reign of terror with a balloon on a stick? Plain stupid doesn't describe it...

The peace sign is so stupid it's great... Whenever any J person breaks out a camera, I give it at absolutley every opportunity. Love it.

All valid points, the chopsticks, the pet bottles etc. Like charity, this must begin at home and just what is it with silly Japanese people eating daily with 'waribashi'? You might have mentioned the people lolling about, feet up with car engines idling. The worrying thing about this is Seiko Noda will sleep with a good conscience thinking she's done her bit for this issue by holding up a poster. Nothing more than loopy J logic at work once again. Gotta be mor than cute posters at this late stage of the earth's devolvement. Why not promote something real, like air cars that run on air? That makes real sense for a change.

Cleo: 'entrenched' my choice of word, yours to play with. Still, I stand by it; you live in a cocooned environment and it shows. Nuff said.

Cleo; your predictable response offers neither any surprise nor insight. Plenty of people, if not the majority here know exactly what I'm talking about.

The general rule of thumb is; the Japanese are polite to 'guests'. And while you're a guest, you'll be treated well because that's the all inclusive social rule. Social mores if you like. Once you become entrenched to any degree the rules change and the usual exclusion tactics are the norm. So friend, always be a guest and you'll be just fine...

30,000 is about right for the works. The article is about Shinjuku, remember. I dunno about the 'losers' aspect though? It's a mutually understood charade by customer and operators from the moment one walks in and all pretty harmless... Except for the tab of course.

Like it or not, the manufacturing side of the J economy stays afloat in no small part due to illegal workers.
Lots of small factories dotted around Japan would go belly up pretty quickly without their input. What do they get? A stipend salary, no medical insurance, no pension, no recourse for abuse, no nuthin' . I'd say it's a good deal for the employers...

Damned if we do, damned if we don't. I concede your point, Cleo. I'm sure we all want the loonies off the streets, no doubt about that. Searches would seem an effective and sensible way of doing this I agree. What is annoying to see are the stereotyped generalizations of the 'searched'.
Last Sunday's nut-job looked like any salaryman. Clean cut, suited and approachable. Notice the guy in the picture... A typical stereotype troublemaker for J police aka tweedledum and sidekick perhaps. Looking at the wrong type here I'm afraid.

IF THE POLICE TRY TO TAKE YOU TO THE POLICE BOX (kouban):
they cannot do so against your will, unless they formally arrest you, under the Shokumu Shikkou Hou Article 2, Clause 2 and 3:
==================================== Clause Two: "It is possible to ask a particular person to accompany the [police] to a nearby police station, police branch [i.e. kouban], or any police administration area for questioning if it is determined that this place is unsuitable for questioning because it obstructs traffic or is disadvantageous to the questionee."
Clause Three: "Unless there is a regulation relating to criminal action, officials may not confine, bring back to any police administration area, or else coerce a person to reply to questions
against his will."
which means that a cop has the right to ASK you to accompany him to the Kouban, but you have the right to REFUSE, and he has no right to restrict your movements without a formal charge or arrest.

The revised law clearly states; police have no business with anyone unless there is the suspicion of a crime. It's a good idea to go to the Debito Aldwinkle site and print out the small extract in Japanese of this law, then carry it around to produce on such occasions.

As big a critic as I am of the keystones, they handled this pretty well, particularly the arresting officer. The guy would've looked like Swiss cheese and gone down in hail of bullets in the US and possibly others in the 'friendly fire' or ricochets... Good to self-restraint and coolness prevail.
Moderator: Readers, what police in other countries would have done is not relevant. Keep the discussion focused on Japan, please.
