Sagecat: Why do people do it you ask? I wish I knew? But given the empty platitudes from the agencies such as Health and Welfare I'd say a lack of any concern by others outside family is the real problem. Basically, the Japanese a very, very lonely people. the loneliest people on the damn planet in fact. Often they are lonely in their work and even their personal relationships and of course the snobbery surrounding mental illness precludes any serious attempts to look at the problem.
I agree with RD Laing in as much as these sufferings, if correctly dealt with and nursed through can be great teachers through life.

This is a rare, but not unheard of case. As dreadful as it is to recall, I can remember a few stories overseas of women giving birth in toilets. Suffice to say these people are seriously demented and probably beyond all help. I don't think capitol punishment is a cure, anmore than charity is a cure for poverty. I doubt if there's any deterrent for people like this as they are far too gone.

Yeah, scripted all the way from what I saw on NHK and I'm with USNinjapan this, as it presents nothing other than role-play. 'you run over there, I'll fire three shots, you shout Bakkayaro! Then the dog comes, OK?' 'And then run over there'. Silly stuff...

I've been around Japanese jazz for quite a while. There are some good players for sure but at the same time, there is just this something lacking ... Terrific technically, often extrovert like. They know all the theory but robot-like and usually passionless. My guess is this kids in the same boat.

Well, given the rapid closures of maternity clinics in Japan, the number of med. students not electing obstetrics or gynecology as majors, things are looking bleak. Gynecology isn't considered a 'sexy' branch of medicine to study which is odd, as I'd say it's about as sexy as it gets....still.
Litigation suits against doctors here are taking off and few get it in the neck as much as gynecologists and obstetricians. Good luck for those wanting kids in the future.

Good thinking Japanese penal system dorks... Leave an ex-inmate without any means of support. Just open the gates and say; 'gambatte ne' sure ain't gonna work. Just as we saw the other guy who stabbed an infant in a pusher somewhere in a department sore a year or so ago. Penniless, he was sleeping in deserted cars, buildings and didn't have anywhere to go. What a retarded system.

There's too much of this hank-panky going on in eating establishments for my liking! I like my food served with a minimum of fuss and certainly not with a couple horizontal folk dancing on the next table... No siree. Just a quick look at the couple in the convience store on You Porn was enough thank you.

taiko666 Not for the money, huh? I met a one-man-band act from Australia who said he'd bought four, that's right, 4 houses in his country from many years of busking in Japan. Sounds like a sweet job to me but granted, he's been at it a while including the bubble years.

I have to agree from personal experience that this is a very, very costly business. Regrets? Not really, but what is of interest is the number of intelligent professionals not interested in families. Guess who's doing all the breeding... the poor and undereducated. It's not too hard to figure out where that's gonna take us, huh?
