I saw an interview on British TV with Richard O'Barry, and he stated that the biggest problem with filming this film was the damned Yakuza. That would maybe explain the locals' refusal to co-operate.

"Found hanged" is fine. The past participle of 'to hang' when it refers to the method of execution is 'hanged.' "Found dead" would have been equally as correct, but "found hanged" gives more detail, so I don't see the problem.
