True, the yanks get dirt cheap cars and petrol, and still complain about prices being too high. Impreza 2.0i Sport here in Japan starts at 2,226,000 yen. Figure in the exchange rate at the moment and that's a roughly a $5000 premium.

Still, like mrsynik says, I'm not sure what this has to do with "Japan". Why don't they talk about what Subaru is doing in Japan? The Eyesight system, Outback Sports model with bilstein suspension etc.?

Maybe I'm getting old, but I find recent Pixar and Dreamworks animations to be somewhat lacking... they are entertaining to a certain degree, but I find their earlier work much more "family" friendly, with simple enough plots to keep little kids interested and a few innocent adult jokes for the parents.

My favourite Pixar movie line is from Monsters Inc when they Abominable Snowman offers Sully and Mike yellow coloured snow cones. Mike looks away in disgust and the snowman quickly adds "Don't worry, it's lemon". Classic! ^o^

hoserfella, I wasn't directing my post at you directly, or even indirectly for that matter. I was actually commenting on the thumbs down a few people seemed to be giving to anyone for daring to say that Lexus is perhaps not the best brand in the world. For reliability, yes, I'd say Lexus wins hands down over anything European. For exterior design and driver experience, I personally find European cars the better ride (though my experience is limited to BMWs, Minis and a Jaguar a few years ago - hardly extensive ), but that is my personal preference.

My beef with Lexus, which is more of a personal observation than a beef, is I just honestly don't understand the premium you are paying over a regular Toyota, considering parts, quality and engines are not all that different. It is not a so much a criticism of Lexus, rather praise for the regular Toyotas. Sorry it is coming across as me being anti-Lexus.

Now if you'll excuse me it's time to take my Subie for a spin to the supermarket : )

For the Lexus fanboys who can't stand a little criticism of the brand, you do at least know/admit they share the same parts as their Toyota siblings don't you? Just like Audi uses VW parts and engines on its cars.

So my question is, what "extra" are you getting by paying quite a large premium for the Lexus brand? I don't think Lexus is any "more" reliable than other Toyotas in the same class. Like I posted earlier, you could get a fully decked out Mark X Premium L package complete with leather seats, radar cruise control, sunroof etc. all for the same price as a base grade IS250 that has none of those.

Just so people don't misinterpret my post, I have no problem with Lexus cars (don't own one, though have driven one). Personally I prefer the design of Euro cars, but weighed against reliability, Lexus ultimately comes out ahead.

Still, I'd consider a Mark X or Crown Athlete, or even a Harrier (which is essentially the same car as the RX350) with the "less prestigious" Toyota mark over a Lexus, where you are paying a premium just for the brand name.

Lexus are way ahead of BMW

Way ahead in what way, exactly?

Lexus is just great marketing - an over-priced, re-badged Toyota car with a bunch of bolt-on goodies.

True, you could get a premium model Mark X and add on practically all the options you can think of, and the price will come out to be about the same as the base model of the GS350. They use the same parts, so why not?

Science - Day-by-day and year-by-year it continues to debunk religious myths one by one.

Some recent examples please? And please don't say "The world is not flat" and "The Earth revolves around the sun".

Unless you are Fundamental Christian that believes the Earth is 6000 years old and we are direct descendants of Adam and Eve, then you may find that many people who believe in religion also welcome new scientific discoveries. You cannot prove or disprove God's existence through science.

Those posters who think any of the last five PMs would have handled this TEPCO disaster better are not in touch with reality

I agree that Kan has done just as well as any other bumbling idiot politician in Japan would in the same circumstances. But it is humorous to hear about his plan to read up on nuclear power SIX MONTHS after the event occurred. As others have said, it's a bit late, isn't it? He should have been reading these books 6 months ago.

Papasmurf has clearly never been to my apartment or he'd understand the reliance on a.c

Maybe he has, you never know. : )

I can imagine you wanting to put on the a/c if your house is 35 degrees. I still think a shower, some fluids, an ice pack thingy and a ceiling fan will make you feel more refreshed, but that's just me.

    @ SRowan,

    I'm with hoserfella here.

If the parent was holding the kid's hand and somehow lost grip, then that is an accident and I won't fault them.

However if they weren't holding his hand, then that is negligence. I don't care what other circumstances are at play such as luggage or shopping bags etc.. the child's safety should be any parent's first priority.

And it's not even that hot this year... Last year was a killer, but this year's summer is pretty mild by comparison - at least where I live.

I don't really understand the reliance on air conditioners to be honest, at least not for people sitting at home all day. Have a cool shower in the morning and one in the afternoon, drink lots of fluids, put one of those ice things around your neck and you'll be fine. It's really not that hard to stay cool and conserve energy.

What really wears me out is the sudden temperature changes when walking out of an air conditioned room into the muggy heat.

It's about time... Domestic airfares are way too expensive here. Offer a 7000yen flight from Osaka-Tokyo and I'm sure tickets would sell like hot-cakes.

it will be nice if japan can have street names and stuff,

If they made a rule to use only Japanese words and kanji for streets, then that would be okay.. I get the feeling every second street would be Janglish written in Katakana... Here are some examples from near where I live:

    furo-raru abenyu-

    san hose sutori-to

    O-randa Doori

    and my favorite

    **Happi- sumairu sutori-to **
