This is a last desperate move by Japan to inject itself firmly in the leadership role of Asia's 21st century. It will fail because China and the U.S. see right through the charade.

Japan is hindered by history(mainly 20th century), cultural limitations, economy(a debt level approaching 200% of GDP with no end to its rise in sight), demographics(the nightmarish social expenditures now and the foreseeable future), paucity of natural resources, and its U.S.-written constitution that it doesn't have the backbone to change.

Japan and a leadership role in Asia don't go together.

Hatoyama says Japan should embrace more migrants

Unless there is more to this article that was not printed here, Prime Minister Hatoyama is not saying this.

What he is saying is vague and non-committal. It doesn't commit him to any course of action.

I guess it sounds good at such a meeting of international leaders in Singapore.

"but if you went there without Japanese language skills JLPT level 2 or higher, you will just feel discriminated. Even companies doesn't accept foreigners unless they are JLPT 2 or higher."

Outside of teaching English, the great majority of jobs should require foreigners to have a degree of Japanese language proficiency.

I don't see how anyone should interpret this as discrimination.

    SushiSake:

    "Sorry, I sense underlying racism...."

    (X2)

You should take President Obama's recent advice and not jump to conclusions.

    sonnoujoui:

"The big majority of the Japanese are quite happy that he represents Japan as the emperor.'

Most Japanese rarely think about the Emperor outside of the end of the year when he has his birthday and New Year's when he makes his second grand apperarance in little over a week behind bullet-proof glass to wave at some thousands of people.

"But I still like the Macarthur photo with Hirohito.... That really says it all.... Wasn't much of a General, but he sure knew how to play politics."

mindovermatter: He held all the cards in dealing with Emperor Hirohito, but failed miserably at U.S. politics-from the 1948 presidential election to getting fired by Truman for not respecting the ultimate civilian authority over the U.S. military.

In the end, all this says to me is that U.S. President Barack Obama will be popular in many parts of the world, but he should pay much more attention to what is going on in the U.S. I see a failed presidency along the lines of the one of Jimmy Carter, which will be almost unavoidable with his poor decision-making along nearly all lines, and once his Democratic party gets trounced in mid-term elections next year.

I guess I should wish Emperor Akihito a long life as a fellow human being, but it will be interesting to see the imperial succession circus after he passes away.

"What did you want your hero to do, high-five the emperor?"

C'mon, sarge, you know it's called "high touch".

I don't really care if President Obama wants to travel the world apologizing for America's misdeeds-real and imagined-while showing himself to kowtow to various religious and political leaders around the globe.

It seems to me that he's setting himself up for lucrative speaking engagements anywhere and everywhere after he finishes his one-term as president.

    Good for him!

I hope the Emperor and Obama didn't need the interpreter too much during their conversation. I'd like to think that Elizabeth Gray Vining did her job well teaching English to the Emperor, although it was a long time ago.

societymike: Obviously I know that LEDs save lots of electricity. I have them throughout my home. What I'm trying to highlight is the notion that I saw first-hand in recent years in Japan that the use of them somehow makes it O.K. to use a lot more lights for days or often weeks longer for displays. Why not use even fewer lights and for a much briefer period to save one helluva lot of electricity? Is it really necessary for places like Tokyo Midtown to have a Christmas lights exhibition up for 1 1/2 months?

"the display which consists of about 700,000 LED lights"

Let's save electricity by using LED lights.

Let's put up displays using more lights and for a longer period of time because we're saving some electricity by using the LEDs.

    Makes sense.

I think some part of the reward money should be awarded to Japan Today in the name of all posters who actively contributed to threads over the past couple of years to increase the exposure Tatsuya Ichihashi got throughout the world via Internet for his heinous crime.

Then Japan Today should turn around and give the money to Ms. Hawker's family to dispose of as they wish.

    Moderator: Thanks for the suggestion.

The death penalty was the appropriate punishment in this case, as a family member of one of the victims said yesterday, "He had a debt to pay to society."

Good-bye and good riddance, John Muhammad.

There would be a noose with his name on it, if there were any justice in the world.

But since Europeans don't believe in capital punishment, I guess a number of years in jail should be sufficient for his rehabilitation and return to society, and I suspect the Japanese court system will eventually concur.

Regardless, I hope the Hawker family eventually gets some closure to this terrible tragedy involving their daughter, but they'd better be prepared for the snail's pace of the court system in Japan.

Tatsuya Ichihashi-you will rot in hell one day.

Igarashi will probably run into a couple of big problems in the U.S. First, his velocity is nothing special for MLB. And, more importantly, he has a throwing motion where he "cocks" his arm and the batter gets a very good view of the ball before it ever leaves his hand. I'd be surprised if he doesn't have a gopher ball problem if he goes to the U.S.

I wonder if he'll do well in the U.S. If I were a GM in MLB, I'd also remember the case of Shinji Mori before doling out too much money to Igarashi.

    Kick him in the nads.

The fact that a gaijin attacked a Japanese would bring the cops running like speeding bullets.

"His anger was noted by a classmate, who said Hasan “viewed the war against terror” as a “war against Islam."

So then he should have resigned his commission at the earliest allowable date and returned to civilian life.

He reportedly served 8 years as an enlisted man prior to his medical education and service at Walter Reed Army Hospital. How much did the military do for this bastard at taxpayer expense?

But then again, President Barack Obama, our Commander-in-Chief, has cautioned against jumping to conclusions, probably in the hope that he won't have to deal with too many difficult questions in the aftermath of this tragedy as the mass media moves it to the back burner with the health care vote in the House of Representatives coming up, among other things.

"This is where I believe you see Political Correctness failing. I believe if someone was to raise a flag on him they would have been accused of being what many here would say intolerant. I really believe that."

Yes, this is something we agree on.

What I am doing is taking a hard look at this one particular individual and wondering how his beliefs could have been even remotely compatible with his duties as an officer in the U.S. Army, one who was to provide mental health services to other members, and one who scheduled to deploy to one of our conflicts in the Middle East.

I am not making a blanket indictment of Islam.

I'm thinking there was a failure of massive proportions throughout the chain of command because of blind subservience to the Political Correctness God.

Pass the buck in the name of religious diversity and hope that things don't blow up in your face someday.

Try explaining how this sick bastard was even still in a U.S. Army uniform yesterday to the families and friends of the at least 13 who died at his hand, and the dozens of others injured.

This guy should have been booted out of the Army long before this tragedy occurred.

When you read some more about the guy's background with his religion and the myriad problems he had in the Army, it makes you wonder why he was still in the service, let alone promoted to major in recent years.

All in the name of promoting fairness for people of all religious stripes, no matter how incompatible the beliefs with serving in the U.S. military, and damn the potential consequences.
