"Maybe its because when you have all the diversity we have in the U.S. military, one incident like this does not make an epidemic."

True, but the news reports I've just seen on the major U.S. networks lead me to believe that the you-know-what is going to hit the fan about religion in this case.

According to NBC, Hasan was "outspoken" in his criticism of the upcoming deployment to the Middle East for his unit. We'll see what comes out in the coming days, but I think this country is going to be forced to finally come to grips with the above issues, instead of taking the politically correct easy road and ignore them.

"I cannot say exactly how much it doesn't happen, but I can tell you it doesn't happen a whole lot more than it does happen."

    This is a numbskull statement.

"Why must these tragedies always revolve around a religion. Get over it. Islam is not the devil."

Not saying Islam is the devil, but if religious belief was at the core of what made this man snap and commit mass murder, then it needs to be discussed openly and frankly without fear of recrimination, something that all too often in the past couple of decades or so Americans have not been able to do.

"Look at what is being done by a "Christian" country throughout the world."

I have and the view has been a sickening one this decade. But for a soldier to commit mass murder against his own is no way to make a political statement against something you don't believe in.

"A law enforcement official identified the shooting suspect as Army Maj Malik Nadal Hasan."

Why does the United States of America continue to take the head-in-the-sand approach that such so-called diversity is good and creates an inclusive society when in reality it is divisive and facilitates exclusivity?

I would like to believe that President Barack Obama will take this massacre seriously and talk sincerely about the above problems, instead of making a mockery of things like he did with the "BeerGate Summit".

What a horrific tragedy. The longer I'm back in the U.S., the more I fear for the future of this once-great nation.

"Make sure the stadium has a pleasant environment."

Nippon Professional Baseball has never done enough to provide fans with a relaxing environment to watch a baseball game. Most of the stadiums in Japan are poor facilities compared to what is offered in the U.S.

It's time for Wii to start collecting dust in a corner with AIBO.

If you want a pet, buy one. If you want to exercise, go for a walk in a nearby park or swim at a city swimming pool for 400 yen.

If you want to socialize without the effort, go to an izakaya and eat and drink with your fellow human beings.

This technology is a waste of money and a waste of time.

USNinJapan: I spent several years in the Navy myself and can understand your point, but you should also remember that we are talking about Japan here, and to say that the accident is 100% the Korean captain's fault is not the way the Japanese look at accidents. If the reports are true, the traffic controller from the JCG will bear at least some of the responsibility, regardless of your take on the matter.

According to today's Japan Times, it's looking increasingly like another maritime foul-up of massive proportions to be blamed on Japan, and not Korea.

"In the difficult narrow strait separating Kyushu and Honshu, vessels are required to keep to the right as per international navigation rules. But the traffic controller at the JCG's Kammon Strait Maritime Traffic Center in Kitakyushu guided the freighter to the left in order to pass another ship, the JCG said."

"According to the Seoul-based operator of the containership, the captain said he had originally planned to pass the right but his ship was guided to the left by the controller."

"The direction from the traffic controller may have been the cause of the accident," a JCG official said."

"In an apparent effort to dodge responsibility, however, the JCG said the instructions given to vessels by its traffic control centers aren't binding. They are simply "traffic information" for ships to make their own decisions, it said."

I seriously doubt this story is as simple as some of the reports from the Japanese side are trying to make it out to be. In the aftermath of the fatal Atago debacle, there will be no limits to what the Japanese spin doctors will do to keep this under wraps. Let's wait and see what else comes out in the coming days.

This certainly complicates things. It will definitely be interesting to see how this case is resolved, and what impact it will have on the many others just like it.

By the way, after reading some of Cleo's comments, I'm more inclined to be sympathetic to the mother's side in this whole fiasco.

It sure does sound like Mr. Savoie wants to "have his cake and eat it, too."

"Tokyo has argued that signing the convention may not protect Japanese women and their children from abusive foreign husbands, but Foreign Minister Katsuya Okada recently said officials were reviewing the matter."

The great majority of international marriages in recent years in Japan involve a Japanese man and a foreign wife, more often than not from another Asian country.

Is it out of the realm of possibility that a foreign mother living in Japan could escape an abusive relationship and illegally take their children back to her home country? Is there no need to be concerned for their welfare because they generally come from "inferior" Asian nations?

We've seen the huge upsurge in domestic violence cases(I know it can go both ways) since Japan actually started paying attention to this issue.

Japan should be more concerned about these issues all the way around.

@Sarge: I didn't get screwed by the insurance system. I got screwed by incompetent doctors and what's supposed to be a leading int'l hospital in Tokyo a year ago.

My advice to people is don't live in Japan as you get a little up in years without a Japanese spouse-regardless of your language skills-because I know from personal experience where a single gaijin ranks on the priority list for the Japanese and health care.

Luckily I was able to get most of what I needed through the VA after I came back and things are O.K. now, but it was a helluva a way to be forced out of Japan and the life I had to leave behind.

    Thanks for asking, sarge.
