As a matter of fact, I clearly remember Troussier stating in Sydney in 2000 that the Japanese were tactically better than the Americans, but just could not capitalize on their opportunities.
It seems as if nothing has changed with the U.S. defeating Japan again in 2008.
"Japan created a lot more chances, but they couldn't finish."
This is so often the case with Japan. If you cannot put the ball in the goal, no matter how nice you look creating opportunities, then you are just not any good. Period.
"Ironically, The US team beating Japan isn't even newsworthy back in America. We just don't care about soccer."
The first statement makes no sense, and the second statement is absolutely not true. Soccer is a very popular participatory sport in the U.S.-from very young kids through high schoolers. The ambivalence…
What is your point, other than thinly-veiled grumbling about the U.S.?
Japan, under a provision since abolished, used its prerogative as host of the Games in 1964 to get judo introduced-not only to show some Japanese culture to the rest of the world-but also to help it improve its…
I bet President Obama will be jealous of Japan if the Japanese can pull that off, because the U.S. will not have a budget surplus by 2011 even if Obama gets everything he wants from the Democrat-led Congress.
"With less than six months left in office, Bush is out to show that the United States is engaged in Asia’s affairs, and that the economic and security dividends pay off back home."
"economic and security dividends pay off back home"
Well, Justice Minister Okiharu Yasuoka has said he is not against hangings, so why should he be against visiting those that were hanged 60 years ago for their war crimes and later enshrined at Yasukuni Shrine?
This is perfect for a Shintaro Ishihara-led effort to get the Olympics. He believes the Japanese occupy one world, and billions of outsiders on this planet another one, but let them have a little extra contact for a month in 2016 for good ol` Nippon.

The timing on this announcement is SO Japan.
Let us continue to do everything possible to make people turn their attention away for a while from the Games in China!
