If you approach them with a friendly attitude and respect, that's what you get in return."

Do you work for Yokoso Japan? Try taking the blinders off and being a little more objective, please.

Tokyo will not win its bid for the 2016 Games; they will go to Chicago or Rio de Janeiro. I hope the successful city is Rio.

“I’d like to see more foreign wrestlers allowed in but it’s not my decision,” Hakuho, a Mongolian, said Wednesday at the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Japan. “I think it would be good for the sport.”

    Spot on, Hakuho.

No, I do not want the Olympics held in Tokyo in 2016.

The next Football World Cup will be held on the African continent for the first time in 2010, so why not give South America a chance to hold the Olympic Games in Rio?

    1) News stories debated on the old JT and this one for the past several years have made it abundantly clear that Russia will not give up the Kuriles (Northern Territories) for various reasons, including the rich mineral resources that Russia is giving contracts to Russian-owned companies to extract. I pointed this out in the first part of my post.

    2) Japan has lived in "heiwa boke" much too long. Russia, Korea and China view any strong-sounding statements about disputed territories by Japan as idle threats at best. And part of this is due to Japan's insistence on having it every which convenient way at the time with its constitution, #9, the SDF, etc. Only when Japan is truly willing to take responsibility for all facets of its defense and foreign affairs will its neighbors take it seriously outside of the economic realm. I pointed this out as well.

    3) The Kuriles (Northern Territories) DO belong to Russia at present, Takeshima (Dokdo) is a Korean possession, and the Chinese will take the lion's share of the oil/gas from the disputed areas of the East China Sea in my opinion, regardless of Japan's wishful thinking to the contrary about "agreements" last year.

And I further think Japan is stretching international law to the breaking point with its actions on Okinotori Rocks, and many reasonable arguments to support my assertion have been made in newspapers and elsewhere.

    4) I think Mino Monta became too big for britches a number of years ago, and it's not just his job on "Omoikkiri TV" that needs to go. Mino Monta may sincerely believe that Japan should buy the islands back from Russia. As he is entitled to his opinion on this matter and others, so am I.

Japan will not regain possession of the Kuriles (Northern Territories) for the foreseeable future. PERIOD.

Mino Monta had better live to be a centenarian if he wants to see the Kurile Islands returned to Japanese control. It won't happen in Vladimir Putin's lifetime, and it also won't happen until Russia mines the islands for their mineral wealth. Even then, it would cost Japan a pretty penny to regain possession of them.

Honestly, I can't see it, especially when Japan has lived more than a half century in a dreamy peaceland, while expecting the U.S. to protect the country.

Not to worry, though, as Japan can keep making maps that show the Kuriles as Japanese territory.

The Kuriles belong to Russia, Takeshima is Korean territory, and China will take what it wants from the East China Sea, so Japan had better console itself with building up the Okinotori Tetrapods to expand its EEZ.

It is high time for Mino Monta to retire anyway-move up the date.

"the developers who incessantly tinker with the urban landscape, helped along by a collective amnesia which ensures that whatever they knock down next will be swiftly forgotten."

I really liked this line in the review.

Noripinhead: I think the dearth of comments is more reflective of the overwhelming number of books on Tokyo than anything else. This book might be a somewhat interesting read, but is it really necessary? What's new?

john113: I bet you I do know the JMSDF has been wearing it since 1954. I worked alongside JMSDF members in the '90s on Atsugi and Yokosuka, but thanks for asking.

Let's see what the JMSDF and Japan Coast Guard members do when they encounter hostile fire from some Somali pirates.

And with no one to protect them like in Iraq, so good luck, Japan!

Campbell Brown is not interesting, and her temporary replacement, Roland Martin, is nothing other than an affirmative action poster boy.

If I see Nancy Grace on, I immediately change it to another channel.

Larry King outlived his usefulness many years ago.

Lou Dobbs is annoying and dominates every conversation, instead of letting his guests express their opinions.

It's good to have a variety of sources for news, rather than a too-big-for-its-britches CNN trying to control everything. People need to hear and read real news. CNN losing the ratings war is a healthy development.

Pakistani Taliban chief threatens strike on White House

Not to worry as Pakistan will use the additional $1.5 billion in aid from the U.S. to chase down the bad guys in their country.

"The White House says Obama is staying out of it. “The president believes that the case should run its ordinary course, and neither he nor his representatives have had any involvement,” spokesman Ben LaBolt said last week."

A more likely explanation for the president's seeming ambivalence is that he doesn't want to draw attention to questions surrounding his own birthplace, and, therefore, his eligibility to be President of the United States of America.

The simple fact of the matter is that the world recession is going to continue for the foreseeable future, and the U.S. and Japanese governments do not have the cure for what ails the patient.

The Christian Conspiracy that has billions in the 21st century still believing passionately that a virgin gave birth to a male who was actually the son of god and all the mumbo-jumbo about his life, death and resurrection.

What Hath God Wrought? A lot of pain and misery for so many for two millenia based on fiction and propaganda used and abused by the Church and its offshoots.

"The reconciliation proposal is arguably the most novel part of the new plan, which is focused mostly on increasing the scale of ongoing initiatives—promising 4,000 additional troops to train the Afghan army, hundreds more civilian specialists to help Afghanistan rebuild and $1.5 billion in annual civilian aid to Pakistan for the next five years."

Dangle enough carrots in front of the horse and you can get it to do almost anything.

If the U.S. under the George W. Bush administration had not put the cart before the horse in its misguided, doomed-to-failure, preemptive war in Iraq, and concentrated its efforts against terrorism in Afghanistan and Pakistan the last several years, perhaps the situation would be much better at present.

As it is though, the U.S.-led effort in Afghanistan and Pakistan will ultimately end in failure, or history seems to say so.(How does the Obama administration define ultimate success in these countries? Don't tell me they borrowed from the peace, freedom and democracy chapter of the Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld Iraq playbook.)

There is an eerie similarity to what is going on under the fledgling Obama administration with regard to Afghanistan and Pakistan, and our buildup in Vietnam under the guidance of Kennedy and the early part of Johnson's days as president. Only time will tell, I guess.

I think Obama has too much on his plate thus far in his presidency, but he is still a media darling during the honeymoon phase of his administration, so it's full speed ahead with this war, and hopefully not on the road to perdition.

"At this year’s “North Wind” exercises, annual maneuvers held with the United States, U.S. commanders said training involved more joint attacks, more collaboration, closer command and control—just the kind of thing that would be needed if the Japanese were to be fighting alongside the U.S. in Iraq or Afghanistan."

We already know the "contributions" Japan made in Samawah, Iraq while being protected by forces from other countries, so it's rather ridiculous to expect the SDF to "fight" alongside the U.S. and other NATO forces in Afghanistan down the road, and this doesn't even take into account limitations imposed on the SDF by Article 9 of Japan's Constitution, which was so magnanimously bestowed on Japan after WWII by the victorious U.S. and its allies.

But then again, Barack Obama's "Yes, We Can" is all the rage right now, so perhaps the Japanese will have the courage to amend their constitution, and show their fighting spirit in something other than a few sports.
