ReaganLegend: There are many Americans on this board who strongly support our fellow countrymen and women, and love to hit the Japanese every chance we get. But, in the interest of fairness, adults from any country should give credit where credit is due, and Kosuke Kitajima deserves credit for being an Olympic champion once again.

"pathat; bush has steered the Us through 8 years of economic growth."

    You sure about this?

"In Japan the LDP has been in control of a recession lasting almost 2 decades."

Man alive, you tell some whoppers! Japan has been in a recession for almost 20 years? Really? Japan`s economic performance since the economic bubble burst has been generally poor, and at times in a recession by any terms, but what you are saying makes no sense.

Yes, the LDP has historically looked to the construction industry and farmers as some of its most loyal supporters through the pork-barrel spending it has done. So what? This is not news.

The hammer would have fallen on the LDP long ago if the public thought there was a palatable alternative. The DPJ is too much for them to stomach.

Congratulations to Kosuke Kitajima. You are a true Olympic champion.

    Hansen was a huge disappointment.

Congratulations also are in order to the Aussies who won gold and bronze and the American who won silver in the women`s 100m butterfly.

ReaganLegend: Taking the liberty to speak for the majority at JT, we hope that your comments about Bush are a joke.

"The massive national debt will inevitably increase if growth keeps slowing and tax revenues inevitably follow suit. Deficits must therefore expand unless the government is prepared to accept the politically poisonous remedy of slimming spending programs and begins to reckon with the likelihood of tax increases."

The public has heard about the proposed tax increase for so long that they now believe it to be inevitable, regardless if the majority even truly understand the rationale for it. Just end all the dilly-dallying and announce a firm timetable for tackling the nations worsening fiscal situation. The uncertainty is making things worse.

By not doing anything, the public can say, "See, they only care about keeping power in the next election."

The LDP will probably get away with it, though, because the DPJ is so inept.

We have the Olympics underway, and the Russia/Georgia conflict escalating, yet an affair that washed-up politician John Edwards had is generating tons of responses.

    Whatever....

Good bye John Edwards. < :-)

The public said さよなら quite a while ago.

    Rajakumar:

What is your point, other than thinly-veiled grumbling about the U.S.?

Japan, under a provision since abolished, used its prerogative as host of the Games in 1964 to get judo introduced-not only to show some Japanese culture to the rest of the world-but also to help it improve its medal chances.

Japan used its money and influence to get women`s wrestling introduced for increased medal opportunities.

All countries want to see certain sports they are traditionally strong in in the Olympics to enable them to move up the medal standings.

Japan so desperately is working to get baseball and softball readmitted as sports in 2016 because it has so few other medal opportunities in large numbers besides swimming and judo. The slogan, "Baseball in 2016," is part of the advertising on the Nippon Professional Baseball site, for example.

If you look carefully at the history of swimming in the Olympics, you will find that other countries have done very well, even better at times, than the United States.

Perhaps with a lot of the same successful techniques and training regimens being used the world over, as well as the same equipment, there might not be much of a gap between the best anymore.

My guess is that the U.S. will win the most medals in swimming again. Australia and Russia will do well, too. Some other countries will surprise, but, Japan, outside of Kosuke Kitajima and couple others, will disappoint. Anyway, we will see how things play out soon.

"With less than six months left in office, Bush is out to show that the United States is engaged in Asia’s affairs, and that the economic and security dividends pay off back home."

"economic and security dividends pay off back home"

This is truly an amazing statement.

I served three of my years in the Navy here and have long thought the permanent U.S. military unnecessary. That being said, until Japan is willing to make the necessary changes to its constitution, as well as getting the public out of its dreamy peace condition for the past 60 years and accept that the Japanese people themselves should be responsible for the great bulk of this nation`s security, nothing will really change.

It is easier and cheaper to continue paying the "sympathy budget" each year, with the majority of the money supporting thousands of Japanese workers on the bases, and construction jobs that the Japanese benefit from as well.

It is easier to buy weapons from the U.S., and, in many cases, do licensing agreements with the U.S. to eventually provide big money/jobs for Japanese at companies like Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.

When it is all said and done, I think most of the Japanese like the status quo.

Do you think the Olympic Games will be a success?

    No, I do not.

And I think it will be a particularly disappointing Olympic Games for Japan.

Rodney King: If you read carefully on this thread and the other related ones about Fukudas Cabinet changes, you would hopfully be able to understand that the bulk of the criticism from the JT crowd is that he simply shuffled a number of the same ol LDP people in and out of different positions, without much thought it seems to ability, but more toward rewarding party loyalty.

In general, it seems no one is particularly impressed with Fukudas new Cabinet-Japanese and foreigners alike. If Fukuda thought these moves would truly spark a lasting surge in his abysmally-low popularity ratings, hes probably quite mistaken.

How do you feel about Fukuda`s seeming indifference to the "postal rebels" that Koizumi punished, Rodney King?

How about the fact that Bunmei Ibuki once held the post of Education Minister, even though he freely admitted to not knowing much about education matters?

How about the fact that Seiko Noda used to live with another Diet member outside marriage? Not much of a role model for the youth of Japan.

Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda and his new cabinet pose at the prime minister’s official residence following an attestation ceremony at the Imperial Palace Saturday.

    Attestation or prostration?

The guy at the top right looks ticked off not to be in the front row.

The guy on Fukuda`s left looks like one of the Keebler elves.

Sarge: They should call it "Bare Biz" for women.

Keep it up, Japanese women, with the summer exposure. Perhaps a good part of global warming would be to get the women to start the downward migration earlier each year in the spring, and have the U-turn unrushed each fall. Thanks, Japanese women!

I am eternally grateful that so many Japanese women reveal much of their true selves in the summertime. The peaks and valleys make the long train rides much more bearable.
