"typify the difficulties Japanese politicians can create for themselves when commenting on sensitive topics without considering how those outside their own circles might react."
A really sad commentary on how many of these people continue to live in their own little world. And that's why they usually screw up when thrust into the national spotlight.

What's scary here is that Chinese politicians don't always have firm control over a military that's populated by ultranationalists. Not many checks and balances.

"...Pyongyang’s perceived refusal to come clean has derailed efforts to normalize ties."
It's arguable that South Korea has "normal" ties with the North, so besides releasing these captives, what does Japan hope to gain from a country that will renege on any agreement reached?

Saw a street map in Tokyo that had graffiti applied so the info was still readable. Maybe Japanese graffiti is more polite.

"I wouldn't be shocked to see 100 to 120 Yen to the dollar within a year or so"
That was my comment Feb.16th when the yen was at 93.52. Now I think it could push towards 110 by summer's end(I'm not a trader).

Years ago I was in a pinch and needed a bottle opener, so I bought a plastic and steel one at a 100 yen shop. To my surprise it was made in Japan and the darn thing is still in good shape. But here's a just published article from "The Wall Street Journal" about how those shop's business model will be challeged by the weaker yen. "Tough Times Ahead for 100-Yen Stores"

@gaijintraveller: I wouldn't overgeneralize about dogs being fashion accessory. I think the vast majority of Japanese people love their dogs as everyone else does. I DO however agree with you about Japanese people gravitating to pedigrees and dogs that are "in style" at a moment in time.
