globalwatcher, you make no sense. You say:

The world knew this was coming (destroyed) by 3/16 except Tepco and Japanese media.

    To which I say:

Everybody had a damn good idea what was going on once we had our hydrogen explosions - these were reported extensively in both domestic AND international media at the time.

    And now you say:

The US State Dept issued evacuation alert on 3/21 as a matter of fact while Japan was still in denial.

So which is it? The US apparently didn't know on the 16th as there wasn't an evacuation alert until the 21st, according to you. But everybody knew? But Japan? And the US State Department? And GE, TEPCO? So it's just everyone else but those parties?

Hmm, except the first 20km zones were established on the 15th: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-12740843

In a televised address, Prime Minister Naoto Kan said: "There is still a very high risk of more radiation coming out."

He said that 140,000 people living within between 20km (12 mile) and 30km of the plant were at risk and should not leave their homes.

Some 70,000 residents within 20km have already been evacuated, and the premier urged anyone left in that exclusion zone to leave.

"Now we are talking about levels that can impact human health," said the chief cabinet secretary.

He told residents: "Please do not go outside. Please stay indoors. Please close windows and make your homes airtight.

"Don't turn on ventilators. Please hang your laundry indoors."

The government also announced a 30-km no-fly zone above the plant to prevent planes spreading the radiation further afield.

Hmm, seems like Japan knew at least on the 15th, ne?

Actually 3 sets of parts from GE were still on the way from Florida to Japan on 3/18. It is very sad Japanese citizens are the last one to know the truth.as ALWAYS.

Do you have to make the exact same post in two threads? Especially when it's wrong in both. Everybody had a damn good idea what was going on once we had our hydrogen explosions - these were reported extensively in both domestic AND international media at the time.

My guess is TEPCO toyed with the spent fuel roads and accumulated more than the whole unit was design to be able to accommodate.

What use is baseless guessing like this? The situation is crap enough without utterly baseless speculation.

So you would agree that calling the current situation at Fukushima an abnormality is acceptable? Afterall the spokesman said they are seeing no NEW abnormalities, this suggests that they view the current situation as an abnormality.

I know you hate TEPCO, but step back and look at how ludicrous the argument you just made is. Saying there are no "new abnormalities" does NOT mean the current situation is merely an abnormality - though it certainly is an abnormal situation, ne? And more, obviously.

Seriously though when are these idiots at TEPCO going to stop downplaying what is happening at there disaster of a plant.

How is saying "We are not seeing any new abnormality" downplaying anything? The quake didn't cause any new damage - what do you expect them to say?

Yeah, and this evening there will be smoke rising from one or two of the reactors.

It was only a Shindo 4 there. Seriously nothing to worry about at this point.

When I say follow through this one would be incomplete if it fails to bring into the equasion the nuclear devestation in Fukushima, the aftermath of the evacuees who may never be able to safely return to their homes and the possible future health concerns of the population.

I don' t think that's in the scope of what they are trying to do with this film. There's just too much to be told to put it all in one documentary, so I'm sure we'll be seeing a host of films over the next few years dealing with all sorts of aspects of this disaster.

Is it really that simple? Give everything a bit of a washdown and skim off a bit of soil and boom - business as usual everybody?

It is and it isn't. Some surfaces can easily be decontaminated in such a way but soil definitely cannot.

Once the radiation release is stopped or mostly stopped it will probably be best to store the soil that is removed somewhere near the reactor site. Over time try to decontaminate as much land as possible and gradually reduce the exclusion zones. VERY gradually.

The Feds always get pissy when some state or municipality dares defy their edict. And it's usually 'for the children' as well. Business as usual.

If California wants this, let California have it. What's wrong with letting people decide for themselves what they want to put into their bodies?

Pawatan!! Mostly lose? 4 game winning streak. Not bad at all.

1985, NetNinja. If you are a Hanshin fan you just need to remember - 1985. Heck, they've only been Central champs 5 times.

Best of luck to Hanshin and their fans, but it's always a long road filled with heartbreak and loss.

Why am I not surprised that everyone is speculating wildly about how this poor worker died when no facts at all are known? I could have been radiation related, but it could have been heart related, or stress, or any number of other things. Maybe he's a heavy drinker or is in poor shape. It's stupid to speculate before any actual facts are known.

    Win or Lose, Tigers Pride!!

    Mostly lose.

Quite a few teams treat their foreign players well. My Chiba Lotte Marines built a lot of their marketing last year around a Korean player, even though he pretty well sucked. Sikorski was loved for year by Lotte fans, too.

Unfortunately, the average Japanese has not clue about how dangerous the situation is

Why do people continue to say this? Japanese people are not stupid, backwards children. Westerners are not so much better informed - probably much LESS informed as the average westerner in Japan isn't so proficient in Japanese language to know what the press and actual people are thinking and saying.

@utrack, that map tells us noting about current conditions in Fukushima or elsewhere. What sort of particles were released? For how long? We know that radiation levels in Kanto were elevated for a while but they went down and are now normal. Is it the same in Iwaki? Seems they are still a bit elevated according to http://radiation.goo.ne.jp/

beangry, apparently you can't read Japanese as that map has radiation levels from over 6months ago! We all know there was radiation then. What dos that have to do with now?

I read Japanese just fine. I said the labels do not say the level of radiation, and they don't.

Yep, they don't as it would be pretty pointless. Not all food is going to be tested, it is physically impossible and prohibitively expensive to test ALL food. You can only test a representative sampling. So why have a meaningless label on a package?

As to paranoia those are just meaningless insults from someone who has no objectivity and attacks all I say.

Sorry? Where is my lack of objectivity? I've looked at the facts, talked with experts and read experts' opinions and I base my opinions based on those facts. Not because activist groups tell me something and I neither know enough or am incapable of thinking critically for myself that I accept what people tell me (like Dr Kaku!) blindly. I suspect you are using the term "objective" to mean "doesn't agree with me and my hysteria".

I stated before, and it was published in the NYTIMES, Japan Times, and even Japan Today - that food was sold in all prefectures which had radiation. I know for a fact - and can verify it - that several supermarkets I shop at sold that beef, some of which was not labelled Fukushima.

Yeah, and supermarkets by me sold contaminated gyoza from China a few years back - people got really sick from that. What's your point?

Bottom, the race car driver has EVERY right to avoid Japanese food if he wants to

Absolutely. They can also not come to the race if they so choose, and you have the right to move to your home country. We have all sorts of rights.

even if you're too closed minded and dictatorial to accept his human rights.

??? I think you need to watch your blood pressure again there, beangry. You're going to pop something if you continue to be this angry.

Sounds like you're just a japanophile who has to attack everything I say.

No, only when you are irrationally paranoid, which just seems like it's everything you say. Especially when you say stuff like:

The govt claims radiation doesnt harm people.

NOBODY says this. YOU say the government and TEPCO say this. Nobody says this at all.

Lastly your stats are wrong: "Independent readings show the radiation levels in the air and water are pretty much at or below where they were before 3/11." Really? What data do you read? Greenpeace doesnt say that, nor the scientists who published.

Really, outside the 80km zone? BS. And note that I specifically mentioned the 80km zone in my first post before you get your blood pressure up and start calling me a government shill or TEPCO apologist.

That's not irrational fear, it's based on scientific tests and the fact the J-system sells radioactive food without labels.

You must not be able to read Japanese because all the food in my local supermarket has the prefecture and city of origin. Steer clear of contaminated areas and you are way more likely to catch e.coli or listeria or some other non-radiation related bug than you are to get radiation-tainted food.

If you are THAT worried about the lack of labeling, and the lies, and the possibility of further contamination, and you kids' health, why the heck would you be living anywhere in Japan near Fukushima?

I would argue that the explosion at Reactor 3 was NOT a / or only a hydrogen explosion. From the outset I have argued that it was in fact a powerful exothermic one, the red flash at the time confirmed that, this widening dispersion of Pu underlines it.

That's pretty funny! I want you to show me examples of explosions that AREN'T exothermic! Pretty much by definition massive amounts of exploding hydrogen is ridiculously exothermic. I think you need to reference the definition of exothermic!
