How about people like homosexuals and apostates, whose fate under Shariah is death?

...except in the places that practice Shariah where this is not the case. See, you people who are violently anti-Islam think the application of Shariah is black in white - this happens, you must do this. This is true in Iran or Saudi Arabia but it's just not true in the rest of the Muslim world. I can - and have, repeatedly - talked here about places that practice Shariah and the things you just mention do NOT happen. You conveniently ignore this about spout the same lies.

The Copts are threatened because there is basically little government now, they just had a revolution, you might recall. Let's see how things go once there is a functioning government and NOT mob rule, whomever is elected.

Regardless, it's not the US's problem or business. So why bring Obama into it at all?

Ben, this is very big (and sad) news. People should be informed, and a lot of foreign residents can't or don't read the Japanese news.

I hope this guy is caught very soon.

What did Nishioka bat in 2010? .330 and all star and Nishioka is at peak of his career at age 26? Oakland A's, Chicago Cubs and Colorado Rockies had Matt Murten. He played in both leagues in MLB and could do much. Then he went into NPB in Japan and look what happened? 200+Record hits? How could this be?

You just haven't figured out they are two different leagues, have you? There's tons of foreign players who haven't made it in NPB, and there's more than a few the other way. People are different at different stages of their careers. Look at Colby Lewis - crap pitcher to start his career, pitches for two years in Hiroshima where he is solid but not great, comes back to the US to be a key starter for the 2-time AL champs. You just don't know how people will react.

I don't know why you bring up Nishioka's or Murton's 2010. Everybody was hitting the ball that year. Aoki also had over 200 hits. In 2009, Nishioka batted.... 260. Why don't you bring that up?

Well, he IS a .294 career hitter and steals a lot of bases, but yeah, he's no MLB player.

The Japanese say that even a monkey can fall from a tree. If you demand perfection, you will be consistently disappointed by everyone. If you demand perfection or they are out their door, you will be consistently lonely.

Nobody demands perfection. I don't think "not drinking before you fly a commercial jet" is perfection. It's "don't beat your wife" level of no-brainer. Someone with that poor of judgment shouldn't be at the controls of a jet.

Is it too much to ask what your cut and paste is supposed to be about?

You posed questions as if they had not or would not be answered, simple bit of reading showed the investigation is ongoing.

If you don't want my opinion, please don't ask.

You DO have reading issues. You said "Thus, I want the better test". I merely pointed out that you don't have a vote as you are not the pilot, the airline, or the police. Your or my opinion on that topic has nothing to do with anything. The other question was rhetorical.

When important details are missing, such as exactly how much he was drinking over how long a period, again, I am going to ask for the best commonly available. Are you trying to say a blood test is too much hassle? And do you realize that you don't even know if he had his last sip at 4:30 am or if he was merely out until that time?

Is reading the article too much to ask?

"The spokesperson also said that ANA is continuing to investigate the possibility that the captain and his copilot exceeded the maximum alcoholic beverage limit stipulated by ANA rules. "

Thus, I want the better test. I know from experience how bad the breathalyzer is.

It doesn't really matter what you want now, does it? Unless you are the pilot in question or his employer, and I am quite sure you are not?

So you cannot see the difference between wanting to fly drunk and refusing to fly drunk?

No, what I can't see is how anyone who needs to be responsible enough to fly a commercial airliner with hundreds of lives at stake can be so irresponsible to get drunk before a shift. Being wise enough to turn himself in is worthy of a "thanks" on the way out the door. People with great responsibilities need to be held to a much, much higher standard than the general public.

A democracy needs a framework; human rights, institutions, political parties, free speech, courts, boundaries. Simply allowing a radicalized majority to trample on everybody else should not not be our idea of democracy.

It's not OUR idea of democracy; haven't you figured that out yet? It's Egypt's right to self-determine. I'd argue it's a fundamental human right.

Have American politicians really learned nothing from their disastrous experience in introducing "democracy" to Iraq? Apparently not.

American politicians didn't introduce democracy to Egypt. They got out of the way and let Egyptians run Egypt.

The classic example is: Should a mixed group with a male majority have a simple majority vote if it is OK to molest the females in the group?

Of course not. It's also very, very much a strawman argument.

The breathalyzer is notriously inaccurate. I hope they took a blood sample to test so as to get this right.

He was drinking shochu - fairly strong stuff - until 4 hours before his flight. How much accuracy do you really think is needed?

But if he was already saying he was too drunk to fly and a test was demanded, then the foul is much less

Nonsense. The foul is just about the same. They should be prohibited from drinking by law 24 hours before going on duty. If that is too onerous, they need to check themselves into a rehab clinic ASAP.

nearly all are sealed in plastic, styrofoam, cling-film, etc., much more so than in other countries, where natural materials like paper are common.

Plastic IS natural, it comes from the earth as petroleum and is processed to plastic, much like paper is processed from trees.

    >It is not about him pontificating in his fabled speeches. It is about him putting diplomatic and financial pressure on Mubarak to step down and open the door to the islamists.

US foreign policy has it upside down.

Yes! They should have pushed HARD to keep the corrupt, unelected Mubarak in power, thus increasing regional hatred toward the West and the US in particular. What the citizens of that country want has no bearing on things whatsoever.

You support democracy or you don't, it's not a matter of "I support democracy when the people exercising their democratic privileges agree with my values." That's not how it works. Good on Obama for supporting the Arab Spring and people's right to freely choose the government they want. One of the few things he's done that I agree with.

I think that's a firing offense in my opinion. Twice the legal limit before flying hundreds of passengers? Yup...they have no common sense and need to go!

Yes, and it's a jail time offense, too! Thank goodness he was caught before he put the passengers' lives in danger.

The fact that I think the WBC is a waste of time in its current format and timing, and Japan's successes are vastly overrated by the Japanese, doesn't mean that I'm going to make blanket statements that trash NPB in its entirety.

sfjp330 does this all of the time. Every time NPB is brought up or the topic of Japanese players moving to MLB is brought up he/she finds every way to run down Japanese players and NPB. Although saying A-level teams can beat any NPB team is a new low for him/her.

    You are forgetting Fukudome.

WAR between 1.7 and 3.0 over the last 3 years - which is (quite obviously) well above average. He's overpaid but hardly a bust.

If he start losing 3-4mph in his fastball, he will get hit hard.

This can be said about 99% of professional pitchers.

He is too skinny and I doubt he has endurance to last long season of 162 games in MLB for many years. He will end up having arm problem in the MLB. He has a good stuff but how long will his arm survive in MLB?

I don't understand this. He's used to pitching a lot of innings, he is not some college pitcher who's never pitched more than 100 in a year. He'll be fine.

Because almost most teams that signed big buck Japanese players got burned.

Really? Let's look. Jojima was hardly a "big buck" free agent - $5M/yr is what you would pay a quality middle reliever these days. Kaz Matsui got paid a bit more and was a huge, huge bust. Uehara got a reasonable contract and has pitched reasonably well. Matsuzaka has not pitched to his contract, but this is not surprising as his contract was pure lunacy. Ichiro has been worth every penny. Gojira has been really good until he got old. Kuroda has been a high quality starter for some not very good teams.

The only expensive busts I can think of are Kaz Matsui, Matsuzaka, Kawakami, and Igawa, perhaps Irabu - though he was more mediocre than bad. Others like Nishoka, Kobayashi, Ishii have been bad but relatively cheap.

All MLB teams are shying away from Japanese players.

Nonsense. Aoki, Wada, Darvish, and the overrated and sure to fail Kawasaki will all be playing in MLB next year.

But NPB from top to bottom is inferior to MLB, hence there is no reason for the World Series champ to play the NPB champ each year.

We don't play games to establish who is superior and who is inferior. It's not a math exercise. Baseball tournaments are supposed to be FUN,entertaining! What could be more fun than a global club championship? European football does this with the Champions League and it is immensely entertaining.

I'm sure the Hawks could play a fun, competitive series with the Cardinals. Would the Cardinals win? Oh, most likely. But would people watch, be entertained? Definitely. Look how much fun the old MLB/NPB exhibitions used to be.

You got guys like Tsyoshi Nishioka, who is at the peak of the game at 26 hit .330 in Japan in 2010, comes over to Minnesota, and barely hits his weight at .200. The guy has weak arm. You tell me why Nishioka couldn't hit.

I could have and in fact did tell people the Nishioka wouldn't be worth a damn in the Majors. I thought his defense would be better than it was as he does have good range but it's not at all surprising that he wasn't a very good hitter this year.

Darvish will not make it U.S. He pitched too many 150+ and 140+ games. He has a flat fastball that doesn't do much. Better for him to stay in minor league ball in Japan.

Again, very glad to see that you know much more than the MLB scouts, some of which think he can be an ace in the US. And why do you insist on calling NPB "minor league ball"? Are we fans supposed to feel insulted by this witticism? I could just as easily call MLB "That league built on PEDs".

You know what, some of the top single "A" team in U.S. could beat any Japanese team in a 7 game series.

This is the most ludicrous statement I have read on the sports section of this site in a while. You are always spouting such nonsense, always very very negative on NPB. Why do you bother posting regarding NPB, then?

You'll see that Darvish is a very coveted MLB player this offseason with lots of teams offering lots of money for his services. But hey, I guess you know more than scouts and GMs from the 32 MLB teams, right?

He said no, he already owns an iPhone, and he wants a tablet to match it.

Of course. If you are an iOS user already you want a device that can sync with your other devices and has an interface you are familiar with.

Interestingly enough, my college-age nephew wants a tablet for Christmas and his mother told me he wants ONLY an Android tablet like the Galaxy, Iconia, or Transformer. This is largely due to him already being an Android user on his smartphone.
