There is no special age for contemplating suicide. People can feel suicidal at any age, especially the teen years. Those are the roughest years going. Emotions about even the smallest things are so much more intense in that stage of life. It is a really rough age and teachers should be more educated on watching out for the signs. And there should be far more places for teens to turn for help and people for teens to talk to. Lots more awareness is needed.

Hey that girl did the right thing! Some gropers are clever...the first few times, they might touch just enough to make a girl wonder if someone just bumped into them because the carriage is so crowded. If she didn't react at first, then he might have gotten braver and the next couple of times she realized she was being groped but was not sure where the hand came from. Eventually, she obviously had it figured out but had brains enough to know that a) it would be his word against hers and b) pointing the finger at the wrong guy could ruin him for life. She was brilliant to report it, the police were brilliant to call the railway company who were then brilliant enough to plant a staff member on board to act as a witness and back up both the accusation that she was being groped and to confirm the right guy was nabbed for it.

For a change, there is a story on here about some authorities not completely mucking things up. Nice work.

YuriOtani...that would be such a great idea! Charge a fee for the rail fans who want to come and take pics....nice way to subsidize guardrails that really should be built on platforms to prevent knobheads like this guy from jumping down onto the tracks or drunk girls from wandering over the edge of the platform, etc., etc.

Is there another story somewhere that gives more details regarding where the family went? People keep mentioning that the family was out because they were at the hospital; that isn't mentioned in the story above...am interested in reading the story with more details. Anyone have the link?

There have been many stories where things happen to kids with parents nearby but they took their eyes off their kids for a second, etc....many posters judge those parents far too harshly; sometimes things happen in the blink of an eye and could happen to anyone. But stories like this??!!! Just blatent stupidity and inexcusable. You just don't leave a toddler at home all alone!! Same with the mother who left her kid in the park with dogs in another news story. You don't ever leave your kids for any amount of time where they cannot be watched!!!

I have to agree with Heda_Madness...I would dare to argue whatever Japanese believe that only Icelandic whale is eaten in Japan are those in the minority...a very small minority. Knowledge that Japan whales (be it for pretend "research" or not) is pretty much common knowledge in Japan.

Those that do probably do not know how much of their taxes go towards it.

That is so true, michaelqtodd!! And there is a bloody good angle at which to attack. Tell the average taxpayer where his/her money is going when it could be used for so many other things and there will be a stink for sure! That is one chink in the armour that the SSCS are either not thinking of or don't want to use because it would mean lower ratings on the boob tube. Handing out flyers or spreading info like that just doesn't make for as good TV as "Smash'em Up Derby" at sea.

I would like to see major changes made to the whaling program, such as a return to this "tradition" they say is so dear. That would entail whaling sustainably in local waters; not killing thousands of whales thousands of kilometers away.

I agree with you michaelqtodd...it is great that he is taking a stand.

However, I still wish SSCS had the savvy to stop whaling long-term. They save a handful of whales each year at the cost of many more whales' lives. The reason I say this is that, what they are doing is extremely short-term and for their own glory. They hinder the whale hunt each year but they don't seem to have any plan to actually stop it altogether. If they did, they would be clever enough to win the Japanese public over to their side.

If enough Japanese were won over and would stand up and shout out against their gov't's whaling policies, that would be far more effective than constantly making the whalers look like martyrs in the eyes of the Japanese.

BBLeo...I think you didn't catch all that USNinJapan2 was saying. He was answering someone else's question above, regarding the space underneath trains.

Saw the footage of the interview with Sato-san...he is a cutie-patootie! If I was that age again... lol

Of course he is refusing to leave the ship. If he does, then there is no story and not enough media attention. And Japan has hopefully finally woken up enough to catch on to their media games and will play them too. They will bring him back to Japan but will let him go as some sort of gracious gesture of goodwill to the protesters.

No matter what the outcome, what few Japanese who will have caught wind of this story, will undoubtedly see all anti-whaling protesters as bad guys and thus there will still be no progress made with educating the general public as to why whaling needs to be reconsidered. Thanks for nothing, SSCS. Again, lots of attention for their own glory, whaling not stopped, and 10 more steps backward with regard to the public's attitudes toward other conservation societies that are working so hard for real causes and not their own 15 minutes of fame. So sad.

Ah...sorry to have taken your words out of context, Heda_Madness! I get what you are saying, now. And to clarify...I am anti-whaling with regard to how it is being done right now. Stick to real traditional whaling, which is sustainable (since, if done traditionally, it takes far fewer whales) in one's own waters. Thousands of kilometers away is hardly traditional.

I have seen videos of things that SSCS has done that involved uncovering lies; like footage of shark-finning and such. It was done in such a way that no one was really at risk and it was really valuable information and footage that should be used to educate and spread the word to people about such things. Unfortunately that good work is not cool enough and dangerous enough for big ratings in the States and to get big money from rich celebs. With SS doing "Whale Wars", they are putting their lives in danger not to save whales but to be on a TV show. There isn't a whole lot of real education or true awareness going on, just a bunch of sensationalized crap for ratings.

yet SSCS crew are able to travel without fear of arrest, there are NO international arrest warrents for SSCS members.

Either Paul Watson is not a member of SSCS or you slipped with regard to research again. There are many countries where he will be arrested the second he enters their territory again.

As for the Japanese crew not wanting a camera crew on board, it could be that they are hiding something or it could be that they aren't into getting on TV while doing their work. No, I do not condone it, I am indeed anti-whaling, but putting myself in the shoes of the guys on board those ships, they are just simple guys doing a job. Oh and by the way, if SSCS were clever enough, they would try to see things from the whalers' side...getting into the heads of your enemy is a far more intelligent and effective tactic than just running around pissing them off. But then again, what media glory and celebrity elbow-rubbing would there be in that? None. SSCS will continue being the idiots that they are. Good intentions without a clue how to achieve them. I still think they are sacrificing the lives of countless whales in the longterm just for a shot at their 15 minutes of fame.

And as for LRADs being military grade...they are commonly used in all kinds of civilian situations as well for crowd control, safety warnings, announcements, etc. They are not all that dangerous unless you are at very, very close range. The Japanese ships have been using them to warn the SSCS ships when they are getting too close, asking them to stop what they are doing and have also used them to make getting too close to the ship annoying for the approaching ships. And as most can see from the videos, it doesn't really bother SSCS crew all that much.

I am with HedaMadness...it is possible to anti-whaling and anti-SSCS. They won't stop until someone is seriously injured or killed...and I highly doubt even that would stop them. Paul Watson doesn't care an ounce for the lives of the young people that SSCS recruits.

I doubt they were testing anything. But I also doubt they were using pepper spray. Whatever they were firing, it doesn't matter what they were aiming at because they obviously aren't very skilled at firing weapons.

taj...good point. Hadn't thought of that. True, all we have is Paul Watson's word, for what it's worth...and a betting person would know not to put money on that!!!

LOL...just saw the video and although it didn't look like anyone was hurt by whatever they shot and had sprayed back into their faces (trust me, if it was pepper spray they wouldn't just be standing there like that) looked really friggin funny! What were they trying to do???? And yes, they were firing into the water...or else they aren't quite as practiced at taking aim and firing shots at others as are the members of the SS. They couldn't hit the broad side of a barn! Not sure what they were playing at but they did look ridiculous.

skipbeat... bang on. SS's intentions seem to me to be less about saving whales than about getting to be on TV. Japan needs to face up to the flimsiness of its "research" and if truly researching in the name of science, do so non-lethally. It can indeed be done.

SS is really doing nothing to truly save the whales longterm in this particular case. They might save a whale or two now and again, but it is at the cost of lots more whales lives because the more they threaten the whaling mission, the more resolved the Japanese gov't becomes to protect it. This ensures that whaling will continue for many, many years to come. Ticking off a bunch of sailors on ships, causing them to portray themselves as victims, is not going to stop the whaling; it's going to strengthen it. It won't be stopped unless it can be stopped by those in control. The people that SS clearly are not targeting because it doesn't make for exciting TV to educate the public or have meetings to hammer out new agreements or create strict policies on research standards.

And as a side-note...hobbsy70: isn't Iceland a member of the IWC?

The education and knowledge is out there. If one still makes the choice to buy cigarettes, it isn't like they were misled into thinking it was a good choice! People know the consequences.

What would be really good to see is a massive wave of damages suits filed by non-smokers who developed health problems due to second-hand smoke. They should sue the pants off tobacco companies because the companies have failed to develop a smoke free cigarette! lol

The Olympics Network was smashing store windows to try and "disturb business as usual"?? And just how does that impact the Olympics? It doesn't. Threatening people with a chain wrapped around your fist?? Yeah, that'll win people over in support of your cause. Cripes. Buddy probably wasn't protesting anything or at least didn't know what he was protesting, just wanted to join the party...
