There have been accidents in the news on here at times when I felt sorry for the parents because it was a case of something happening in the blink of an eye but posters jumped all over the parents in those cases. Sometimes things happen no matter how careful a parent you are.

ut this, there was no friggin excuse for what this woman did. A 2 year old child left alone in a park with some random dogs so she could take out the trash in the middle of the day??? Either she is incredibly stupid to have done that or she is incredibly stupid to think that the police are going to buy that story. I have a funny feeling we are going to see a follow-up headline to this story in the coming weeks.

LOL...Dine and dash is timeless...and apparently universal! It wasn't that serious a crime and yeah, scare the poop out of the girls for it so they don't do it again. That's what most folks do with teenagers who try to pull a fast one and get caught.

They don't really have much of a future as criminals anyway (a little on the stupid side, these gals), so might as well scare them straight before they commit another dumbass crime at an age where their record will be permanent.

The activists found evidence to shoot holes in the whaling "research" cover. I do concede that Japan is covering its butt legally; they really do research and publish their findings but the research papers are so flimsy that a child could see through it all. The activists will have to be convicted and made an example of so that Japanese can continue to live in passive non-knowledge about things like whaling.

I really think that things would change in Japan if more people actually knew more about it. There aren't that many who would feel that whaling needs to be conducted as it is, just to save a tradition. In fact, to save the tradition, back off from whaling for a while so they can come back to local waters. Then hunt them here in a sustainable, traditional manner.

As a side note, yes whales are a major part of the ocean's ecosystem. Everything in the ocean is intricately related and delicately balanced. Screw up the ocean, it screws up things on land...and screws up life for us. We need to learn to stop messing up the balance.

You would have a good point except the aid workers were giving the food to both sexes in the beginning. However, at least half the men who were given food either hoarded it from others or sold it; they didn't give it to their families. Everyone was at their wits' end trying to figure out how to deal with it, so it was decided that the women would be the more responsible with actually distributing the food amongst those who need it, i.e. their families, single men, others in need, etc.

Ready made meals are already being handed out at some spots. Handing out bracelets, stamping hands, etc. would be a wonderful idea were they going to a carnival or night club. If these men are willing to kill for food, rest assured, they aren't going to leave a bracelet on and will definitely scrub a stamp off their hands.

The aid organizations are constantly changing their tactics because thieves are constantly changing theirs. The women only thing worked for a little while but the aid workers will probably have to change that again. They have been struggling non-stop with how to deal with it all.

The disgrace is not the aid workers the disgrace is with those who choose to kill and rape other human beings. This state of affairs didn't just come about after the earthquake.

It is not the curriculum itself. It is the powerlessness of Japanese teachers, apathy of students and overprotection of monster parents who are a little on the dumb side themselves.

There is no reason a kid should be at school as long as a Japanese salariman is at work. I wasn't schooled in Japan, I didn't have endless hours of classes, club and then juku and need to stay up til 1am to get homework done and I was a lot further ahead mentally than most Japanese students nowadays. Although, I am sure it is the case with many countries...kids are getting lazy and don't have to think so much when doing schoolwork. But Japanese students do seem to lead the pack with lack of free-thought, maturity, and everything being spoon-fed to them.

Not super surprised at this. Slightly surprised that 9 out of the 10 had no clue at all. I was expecting that maybe 2 or 3 were working in cahoots with Silsby and the rest were being duped...but all 9...hunh. They are either incredibly naive or Silsby is one crafty gal. I am going with the naive theory.

It seems they really did want to help these kids but were ridiculously ignorant of many things. For instance, if they were unaware that there was no paperwork, where the heck did they think the paperwork was? In Silsby's briefcase? Obviously none of them had even glimpsed it, since it didn't exist.

I really do think that those 9 blindly believed everything Laura Silsby told them.

It will indeed affect how many others offer help...hopefully it will keep the inexperienced, untrained and unprepared away. It is indeed true, Haiti can be a dangerous place. However, some of the kids had parents still alive. You can't just steal children. As for saving them from the evils of Haiti (rape, prostitution, slavery, human trafficking, etc.), sending them to the Dominican didn't guarantee to keep them out of that danger. Dominican is notorious for child prostitution catering to tourists, as well as slavery and human trafficking. Haitians are also often treated as non-persons in DR.

Yes, there are proper channels to go through with adopting a Haitian child. Many people do so. Adopting a child from the Dominican who was actually stolen from Haiti is just plain wrong. If these kids were all actually orphans, I could condone what they did, but not even bothering to check if loved ones are searching for these children...it's just a step they should have taken before doing something so rash.

I am not slamming this group's intentions. I do feel badly for them. However, a lot of headache could have been avoided if they had just prepared for what they were trying to do. Preparation to ascertain that the children really were orphaned and had no relatives who could take them in. Once getting that ironed out, then preparation through authorities to get the kids out of the country or preparation to get around corrupt authorities to get the kids out of the country. Basically, it was like they were looking for a quick solution when it really required careful planning. That is the thing with going down there to help...you have to be willing to make a longterm commitment to stay there and really see things through from beginning to end.

They are being treated poorly because there is no air conditioning and no electricity?? Didn't anyone tell them or their lawyer that there was a major earthquake recently? I suppose that is no excuse. Really, Haiti should have gotten out the red carpet and fine china for them.

I am not saying these people deserve poor treatment, but complaining of no air conditioning and no electricity when so many people just lost their lives and those who didn't lost everything else, like family, homes, food, and on and on, is not right.

They meant well, but went in completely misguided and totally uninformed and from the impression I get from the news, they didn't seem to make any effort to find out how to do the right thing, the right way. Instead of helping, like they intended, they made a mess of things, got arrested, caused any new, legitimate adoptions to be stopped completely (for now) and now one of them needs medical help for a situation that could have been prevented if they had just taken the time to educate themselves on the conditions and proper precautions to take before going. While she could have avoided the situation, just the same I feel bad for Ms. Coulter and hopes she recovers soon. They really did mean well. Just unfortunately for them and for the resources they are now taking up, they are an example of why inexperienced folks can't just up and fly down there to help. They often end up as more of a hinderance.

While I get what you are saying elbudamexicano, the point here is not about how many children people are or aren't having. The point is about the colossal screw-up this group unwittingly committed. As well-meaning as they may have been in their hearts, were really daft on how they carried things out. You don't just fly into a foreign country, put a bunch of local kids in a van then try and take them away to another foreign country without finding out first if you have that kind of authority. Sure the Dominican gave the ok...but what about the children's home country? What about the children's surviving relatives? Can you imagine something like that happening in the U.S.? The British come over as angels of goodwill somewhere like New Orleans after Katrina, pick up a bunch of American kids and transport them to Spain, to be adopted by nice Spanish families, no questions asked, no one informed that it was going to happen or where these kids are about to disappear to. Sounds ridiculous and far-fetched, doesn't it? That is just what these people did. I know they meant well, but they really did not know what the heck they were doing.

The whole thing stinks...to high heaven. It is just ridiculously suspect to round up kids on a bus to another country and claim that was to get them out of the disaster zone. There are still HEAPS of legitimate places to go IN Haiti that weren't destroyed and have facilities where these children could be taken in until family could found. If the intent was truly to try and locate any surviving relatives of these children, it would have made more sense for the kids to be temporarily relocated within their own country. Would have been a lot less paperwork for this group and a lot easier logistically when relatives are found. It just doesn't add up.

On the other hand, if these people truly had their hearts in the right places and honest intentions, they were as dumb as posts to think they can just waltz in and save the day without the right procedures. And dumb to not have a clue that delivering these kids into a foreign country the group obviously knew nothing about, could have made the rest of these kids's lives a living hell. Wow. Naive is an understatement.

    LOL...good one, buggerlugs!

There were 4 in the car so that raises the odds that one of them will crack and spill the beans to the cops. It's still unlikely, but here's hoping.

I also hope this won't result in "beware of foreigners" attitudes, allowing all folks to completely forget all the other stories of those who were hit and killed by cars this past year; many of them dragged for kilometers...by non-foreigners. That being said, still, whoever is guilty of this, foreigners or not, deserve everything they get when caught.

I have to disagree with the viewpoint that one must be a citizen on paper in order to have a say. PRs should have a right to vote as well. I am not a PR and don't intend to be. I pay my taxes and insurance, etc. but I am fully aware that I am not taking a further step with being tied into the system here. I have no problem with the fact that I don't have the right to vote. I do however, feel that PRs should have some voting rights (i.e. local elections). And of course, citizens have full voting rights in all elections. It only makes sense.

I feel that in order to enjoy the right to vote, which is what we are talking about, you must be vested in that institution via citizenship.

As to where your money goes, well if you want a say in how your money is being spent become a citizen.

Ok, if one is to be a citizen to have a say where one's money goes, it only stands to reason that PRs should not pay taxes. They don't have to pay the taxes thus they don't deserve a say. Pay the taxes, you deserve a say. It's only logical. (My case is different. I am on a visa that indicates that I intend to be here only briefly; I am not indicating a vested interest in the system by virtue of the fact I have sought neither permanent residency nor citizenship.)

As for dual citizenship, many countries do it. Why not Japan? The world is a smaller place than it used to be. It is perfectly feasible to be a citizen of more than one place.

Jon Heese moved to a new place, had great experiences and wanted to make a difference about something he felt strongly about. Way to go! He didn't give up on his country of birth, he is making a difference in a new home. Great job!

And I am sure it will only be a matter of time before Japan opens up to dual citizenship. Tsurunen, someone who is fighting to make a difference, and people like him will work hard to make it a reality.

Nemoflow, KyokoSmile and WMD...it is true Japan is slow to change, but change does indeed happen. It just takes people who are willing to stand up for it. If you abhor it so much, we foreigners still have the option to go home; no one is forcing us to stay here.
