"As the world’s second-largest music market and number one in the Asia Pacific region, Japan has always been an important territory for us,” he said. "This is our chance to contribute something"

So that's why we don't see too many charity albums for Somalia.

Breitbart-- It's not a conspiracy, there's nothing opaque about it. The vitriolic anti-liberal tone has been growing for years (yes, thanks to those I mentioned and others, such as your namesake) and has spilled over into the mainstream of thought now that the economy's a mess. It's easy to pin it all on Obama's policies and for reactionary and simplistic 'solutions' to make their way to the fore.

If the rightwing media has such negligible force, how is it that you've chosen your monicker? Coincidence?

Perry will likely be the nominee (to my horror). A sizeable portion of Americans are looking for a strong-jawed cowboy type who will spout the usual clichés about big government, taxes, WASP "values" and the God & USA partnership. It will not matter to his supporters that most of the jobs created under his tenure are minimum wage fast food or Walmart jobs. The middle and lower classes are being conned by these teabag candidates and their backers (e.g. Rove, the Fox media machine, etc.) into believing that making the rich richer will trickle down to them. Most of these supporters will also conveniently forget Perry's suggestion that Texas has a right to leave the union if the federal government does what it doesn't like (i.e. regulate what the rich and powerful are allowed to get away with). A couple of centuries of progress in workers' rights is being flushed down the toilet and few seem to give a damn, particularly those who are being screwed. The Republican joke is getting serious.

What happens if they find out he didn't kill his wife? Do the reverse the suspension of his original sentence? Oh, wait, that's not going to happen. Suspicion = guilt.

Again, this is an event for the families of the victims. It is meaningful for them and my heart goes out to them. However, the 26th anniversary of a tragedy is not really newsworthy, is it? We've heard the details countless times before, including the pathetic response by the govt. Tune in next year, same story same comments.

"One Nation". Won't that disqualify her to be Rick Perry's sidekick?

Not to disrespect the victims or their relatives, but how is this story any different than last year? Is this news?

The band aid on the cover is appropriate. Represents the 5% of profits the victims will get.

According to SMAP’s management, Johnny’s Entertainment, many Japanese fans wrote to the agency following the March earthquake and tsunami disaster to say that SMAP songs cheered them up in the wake of the tragedy.

Johnny's can claim anything they like, but something tells me the victims living in cardboard cubicles have other things on their mind. This album might "cheer up" non-affected fans who are made to feel they've done a good deed by dishing out ¥3,570 for 15 songs and a handkerchief. Of course we're not supposed to criticize aid of any kind, but the motives behind this project are painfully obvious: self-promotion and profits for Johnny's in the name of good will.

about dictators in general and pointed to numerous specific examples

Virtuoso, so what? Then have them apologize for that segment. My grandfather was shot dead by the Gestapo in front of his own children. Teaching the rhetorical skills of Hitler to "jokingly" sell AKB48 is offensive to me and 10s of millions of others whose family members needlessly suffered and died because of the sway of fascist propaganda.

Ito is famous for milking his mother's legacy for his own profit. Misora was a great singer. Her son is just an opportunist. March 11 tragedy? That sells! AKB? That sells! People's nostalgia for the Showa Era? That sells! A collaboration with AKB16 is like putting a pearl necklace on a pig.

artists who will go beyond genres and age gaps

Yeah, it's all about artists and their music.

Remember the BBC program about the Japanese who survived both atomic bombs? And the calls for the BBC to educate Brits about the horrors of nuclear weapons? Well, that program was far less offensive than this one insofar as it didn't promote the positive applications of a horrible mistake in history. I think TBS should be called to account for this one. Public apology and a program on the effects of fascist propaganda, committed both by the Nazis and their allies the Japanese.

These right wing guys are just pissed off because their wives are more interested in Korean TV hunks than their punch-permed, toothpick-chewing husbands. Sexual jealousy is a serious factor in both nationalism and racism, and not just in Japan.

The LDP also demanded that the DPJ repossess all child care allowances and other pork projects, raise taxes on everyone but the yakuza and construction bosses, pave the sides of Mt Fuji to create jobs, undo the March 11 earthquake, guarantee that the next DPJ prime minister resign upon taking office, and erase all mention of itself in history textbooks. Anything else would be unacceptable and counter to the Japanese spirit.

48 girls guarantees an AKB story every day. And who is JT to say no?

The no boyfriend rule, scripted comments about wanting to get married before 30, and combinations of naughty and nice outfits guarantee the private happiness of geeks who should be trying to engage in real relationships with women their age. As long as the media machine has the right to promote lascivious drooling over girls who are designed to look underage, I will exercise my right to spoil the otaku's fun. I have a young daughter, and this AKB stuff sickens me. Enough already!

I agree with the basic sentiment, but I think these people need to see the difference between "peace" and "safety". Nuclear energy is not a peace issue, at least not in the sense that they're talking about it. By mixing these causes together they end up just spouting a bunch of, well, platitudes.

So we've got a grandson of a WWII general, a lawyer for Yasukuni and rabid denier of Nanjing, and a former military man with a WWII-era moustache. I doubt these three individuals are operating objectively toward the greater good of their country. They've got a few axes to grind or fantasy worlds to live out. What's kind of scary is how these fringe wackos still attract a sizeable portion of Japanese sympathies, regardless of how they may be chuckled at for their childishness. Is this the way political discourse has to take place in Japan? And don't these politicians have more important issues to take up at the moment?
