Aya Ueto in a commercial? A commercial featuring a fictional family? A Japanese woman dreaming of being a kindergarten teacher? A crowd showing up to suck up this news? How refreshing.

The winner: the continued fetishization of "unspoiled" underage girls among socially inept geeks and the further promotion of sexual retardation. But hey, it's just entertainment and business, so so what.

This photo is not news. He could have had his eyes closed for a few seconds, he could have been sound asleep--in any case, both political malaise and photos like this are cliche. You see these photos all the time. Means nothing, except how stagnant public discourse is in this country.

I'm waiting for Ozawa to come out with his two pet phrases, the first being that he will risk his political career on this move, and the second that he is working for the people of Japan. Neither is true. Ozawa's career is built on these destructive acts. It is also clear that he has little interest the welfare of this nation. If he did, and if his sycophantic weenies and botchan such as Hatoyama within the DPJ cared about the country, they would be working with Kan toward reconstruction, rather than against him. Same goes for Tanigaki and the LDP.

It's American politics meets reality TV. Sarah turns people on, in a positive way and a negative way. She will never be president, and she knows it, but she's milking the show for all it's worth. She is definitely made in America, 10% balls and 90% BS, and it sells. At least enough.

Lieberman, the story about Walesa "declining" is an Andrew Breitbart and Fox News spin job. He had scheduling problems. He told AFP that he would like to meet Obama, stating, "He bears hope for Poland, Europe and the world."

Well, at least Harper doesn't, and that isn't surprising. I think there are plenty of balanced and rational people in the world who do support Obama's request. It's a bold move, and a wise one.

@sailwind--I agree with you about the need for the Arab states to officially and sincerely recognize the state of Israel as equals. And I think that needs to come along with Israel's return to the pre 67 borders. Both are necessary. I may be dreaming too much, but it really is crucial. Any step toward compromise is good. The extremists will always try to derail the process, but dedication toward prosperous coexistence must stay alive. I admire Obama's current statement for that. The United States has repeatedly (and rightly) chastised the Arab world for its refusal to recognize Israel. The US needs to show that it is dedicated to peace in the region, and not just subservience to the pro-Israel lobby. The latter hasn't worked, and it will not work.

@ihavegreatlegs--I assume you mean that Israelis need to stick to the illusion that they are somehow endowed with greater rights than anyone else and that anyone who questions that is anti-Israel or anti-Semitic. This is an idiotic and childish bronze-age belief, and though extremist Muslims share a similar irrationality, there will be no peace in the region until the 'faith and land' myth is discarded by both sides. I admire Obama for daring to challenge Israel on this point. Israel has the right to exist, but it should not enjoy privileges beyond any other people or state. Israel has long had opportunities to stop settlements in the West Bank, but has continued in the arrogant assurance that the US would never really penalize them for it.
@RRII--your teleprompter gag is old and stale, and is one of the marks of your obvious commitment to blind bitterness over rational debate

@Romeo--
in other words, Trump made it acceptable/respectable for Republicans to flaunt anti-rational, reductionist, and divisive extremism in the shamelessly cynical hope that there are enough people in America who are dumb enough to jump on that bandwagon. Bachman or Palin may not beat Obama in 2012, but with time America's moral and cognitive strengths will weaken enough to make the future America a very very weird place, perhaps a rich man's Pakistan.

The "domestic definition of child abuse" means that it has taken place if the mother claims so. No need to provide evidence. Same with domestic violence (spouse abuse). This is the trick the J-govt has been playing and will continue to do. Basically they do not want to deal with the legal complications of failed marriages and custody issues (and international marriages), so they promote a simplified and stereotyped vision of marriage where the Japanese mother is by default right. And the foreign husband is by default abusive.

Searching for the dead is a miserable, necessary, and profound act. It reminds us that the real toll is on real humans, people who lost everything--their loved ones, their memories, their futures, the pleasures of being alive and being good. We're not just dealing with economic loss and statistics on paper. I am always quite moved by the retrieval of bodies. Bless the people who are doing it.

Cruelty in some ways is contagious. Mexico has become an example of this. Criminalization of commodities leads to criminal behavior leads to psychotic behavior.

That's one way to look at it, I guess. There's also a strong (and related) sentiment in Japan about marrying off daughters, an understandable sense of loss of losing your daughter (because she's going to another family). Another mark of a oddly conservative society.

I want this man to make amends after he gets his own hands dirty cleaning up this mess. It was his cost-cutting zealotry that in some measure pressured TEPCO execs to dismiss (on at least 4 occasions over the past decade) expert opinion regarding the risk of a major tsunami at Fukushima Daiichi. He was also at the helm as TEPCO kept spent fuel rods on site rather than process them properly, in the interest of profits. This is a man whose pandering to stockholders has cost many many a family their livelihood for many years to come, not to mention the endangerment of millions of people's lives. He should be thoroughly ashamed of himself. Send this man in for cleanup detail, and then he can talk about trying his best.

This whole celebrity 'cheering up Japan' chorus is starting to sound trite. It's mostly just a promotional tool. If my house and livelihood were destroyed by a tsunami, a corny detective drama might (possibly) entertain me, but it sure wouldn't contribute toward my recovery.
