Perhaps the father wasn't working. Perhaps he can never see the children under Japan's ancient sole…

@Wurthington. I am a working mother with 3 young kids. I have never left them alone...oh…
I've got mixed feelings about this report. First - it's just a report of an estimation…

If SMAP can't save us, nothing can! Japan's very moral fiber relies on the polished down-home all-round talent of these pretty boys (and the Dentsu propagandists that keep them fed and polished). Maybe SMAP can inspire the J-flock to offer their train seat for an old man with a cane. Nobody did for the poor old soul I saw today on the Yamanote. The previous AC adds are not working.

This thread is going into meltdown. The figure for a CT scan refers to eating the spinach every day for a year. Obviously this will be very bad economically for the farmers in those areas, but the solution is fairly straightforward. Just don't consume any food grown or raised within the danger zone. If you do consume some, you will not drop dead or develop health problems.
Again, this story is misquoting Edano.

Part of this story is not accurate. I was watching what Edano said. Eating the spinach every day for a full year would be equal to 1/5 of a CT scan. That of course is serious, but it is no cause for panic. Calm down, you people.

Well, they must be. For one reason or another there is some serious disharmony in that area. When cops get killed it's a tragedy that goes deeper than the incident itself.

The communist regime in Cuba would have collapsed decades ago had it not been for the U.S. embargo. Cuba presents far less of a threat to the U.S. than China, and is has a relatively better human rights record than China. The U.S. bullying of Cuba has everything to do with the Cuban-American community, especially in Florida, whining about the wealth they lost when Castro threw them out. I understand their gripe, and I certainly am no supporter of Castro and his regime, but I think it would have been (and would be still) much more constructive to engage Cuba, do business with them, and watch the system disintegrate by itself. These hard-line approaches have accomplished nothing in 50 years.

Inaccurate headline. This article is about a Tokyo ordinance, not about Japan's pornography laws.

The way I see it, if you don't want your child's organs donated to another child after death, don't complain when your own sick child can't get a donated organ. I find most of the Japanese public to be grossly ignorant and selfish about this issue. A decent and prosperous society is one where sharing and helping strangers is a matter of course.

You're failing to include the extremely rare autographed Richard Rodgers songbook that the Obamas gave to the Queen on the same occasion. The Queen's favorite American songwriter, BTW, which I would count as a very special gift indeed. But I guess mentioning that wouldn't fit your thesis, that the Obamas are just bad people in every aspect.

@stranger:
How much of an expert do I have to be in order to assert that it's sick for grown men to fantasize about young girls who are not able to take control of their own sexuality? And don't tell me this is just for men who don't have little sisters and would like to be proper role models.
When would a girl call out for her older brother after running a sprint? Gimme a break.

This photo pretty much sums up the spirit of current Media Japan, and it makes me sick: "it's my business, popular is always good, you can't prove what you think, it doesn't mean what you think it does, it makes some people happy, it's part of Japanese culture, it's not your business." As a father with a daughter, I hope these people sleep real uneasy till they come to their senses and stop the promotion of this pathology. It produces nothing but harm. Please!

@yabits: How can you compare Sofia Coppola to Ozu? I thought the Virgin Suicides was very good because it had something creepy lurking beneath the surface, but every one of her films since then has become less substantive and more pretentious. Lost in Translation has its moments, though none are there when you watch it again. Marie Antoinette is awful in almost every respect. This new one is supposed to be worse, with Sofia stripping the narrative down to nothing. People driving around, doing nothing, talking about nothing. I love minimal filmmaking (like Ozu), but only when it knows what it's going after (and I don't necessarily mean linear plot) and knows when to stop. Ozu was great at choosing seemingly pedestrian moments that still resonate deeply. Sofia seems to want to manufacture moments through simplicity alone, as though the style itself will distinguish itself from the usual Hollywood mainstream fluff. She needs to get over herself in the same way Tarantino does.
Moderator: Readers, please stay on topic. Ozu is not relevant to this discussion.

Something must be getting lost in translation. My Western brain can't process this statement.
