    @j4pnFTW

    I'm sorry, but how do you know what kind of view of life she has?

    I don't. I was referring to the characters whose lives seem to revolve around "fashion, hairstyle, make-up and personality".

    So the clothing and bags are a promotion for the drama, which is a promotion for the clothing and bags. Very clever.

    opposite in fashion, hairstyle, make-up and personality

    ...but they share a similarly shallow view of life.

    @Hide

    Some people are always looking for easy money instead of working.

    This woman got less than $10,000. For that amount I don't think she can give up working for a living.

    @Serrano

    This reminds me of that woman who sued McD's when she spilled hot coffee on herself in the car.

    Very little to compare. The McDonalds case was not a matter of deceptive advertising. Don't paint all these people with the same brush.

    These Softbank commercials may be the clearest expressions yet of Japan's ambivalence toward multiculturalism, restructured family roles, and identity formation in a postmodern globalized economy.

    Jin Matsubara, the minister in charge of North Korea’s abduction of Japanese citizens, says that resolution of the abduction issue is necessary for improving bilateral relations between the two countries

    Good luck with that.

    It's a shame the Japanese government can't get its priorities right. Somehow the abduction issue is more important than nuclear threat. It's also interesting that they've chosen Jin Matsubara to be in charge of this issue. He is a nationalist known for his vehement belief that the Nanjing Massacre and other atrocities by Japanese soldiers in WWII are fictions, something that will no doubt also be known by the NK side, which will understand the message that Japan is sending. Not a smart negotiating move by the J-govt, but the DPJ figures it will score political points at home.

    I agree that the abduction issue is something that should be dealt with, but not as a precondition for more important talks.

    you always post the same comments about Japanese TV commercials. Lame.

    Because each of these Japanese TV commercial 'news' stories on JT is essentially the same. Lame.

    They want to crucify him because he’s tapped into that average everyday American Tea Party, grass-roots movement that has said enough is enough of the establishment.

    Yes, America needs someone outside the beltway like Newt Gingrich who refused out of principle to work as a lobbyist, settling instead to offer his services as an 'historian' for Freddie Mac for a modest salary of $22,000 a month. Newt's influence in congress was also negligible, which is why everybody should vote for him.

    Wait, I'm confused...

    At first I wondered whether Gatling guns were allowed in Japanese offices, but then I realized it is a very funny joke and I wet myself with laughter.

    I hope more and more companies hire robotic temp workers and make lots of money.

    Actual age, legality or illegality, it doesn't matter. AKB is a product deliberately made to look underage and sexy. Simple as that. So to have such a product continually thrust in everybody's face offends me.

    First choice is avoid them.

    Never turn on the TV, enter a convenience store, or ride a train. Do not read magazines or newspapers. Avoid looking at billboards. By no means step foot in shops that sell or rent music. Or any other establishments that sell products of any sort.

    Plastic, if you assume (falsely) that all male fans of AKB are pedos

    My reasoning is this.

    1) AKB members are designed to look like like HS girls (i.e. underage).

    2) AKB members are dressed to look sexy.

    3) AKB is not musically talented by any stretch of the imagination, at least not in proportion to their massive success. The girls' voices are amalgamated and digitally brushed up by a computer, which more than likely writes their music as well.

    4) ergo, the predominant reason any male would be an AKB fan is because he is turned on by the image of sexy HS girls. Otherwise it would have to be attributable to an utterly infantile taste in music.

    Take your pick.

    the fact that between 30-70% of AKB48's fans are girls

    So that means only the other 30-70% are pedophiles? That's comforting. Fun for the whole family.

    Sure, the sexualization of young girls is a global phenomenon. Japan's media machine just does it more aggressively and with less shame. And it's defended with the 'it's-Japanese-culture-don't-knock-it' card.

    He has the view that America is in decline and that the best course for America is to appease and accommodate the worst actors in the world

    Examples please, Mitt. Distortion and exaggeration are no substitute for clear reasoning, especially when we're dealing with foreign policy. I suspect he's referring to Iran, and Obama's reluctance to drop some bombs. I also suspect that Mitt will have the same policy as Obama if he gets into the White House, but for now he has to try to feed the Nascar voters some red meat. Shameful nonetheless. What appeasement or accommodation was there in the killing of Osama bin Laden, the support of anti-Gaddafi forces in Libya, or Obama's continuation of the senseless trade embargo with Cuba?

    Is there any sense in continuing to post 80,000 troops in Europe? Have Republicans forgotten that the Cold War is over (single-handedly brought down by St. Ronnie)? Have they also forgotten that a bloated military costs money, and that large troop numbers are no longer necessary in the modern world? Doesn't matter to Mitt. If Obama says he'll cut 100,000 personnel, Mitt says he'll add 100,000 and call Obama a weenie.

    I will make sure that our military is so strong that no one in the world would think of testing it

    Oh, military envy. Hate to burst your ego bubble, Mitt, but that's not going to happen no matter who's president. Ours is still bigger than anybody else's, and that's why they admire us and hate us all at the same time.

    JT should just make 'AKB48' a news section in itself. Interesting how it must be stated each time that AKB is popular, as if that weren't already apparent from the daily bombardment that we apostates are subjected to. My observation is that AKB is more popular among advertisers, the media, and production companies than among the general population. I don't know anybody who likes them. Softcore porn propaganda in service of the entertainment complex.

    There is something fishy going on here. According to the Mainichi, just prior to this incident, Shintaro Ishihara quit as a judge for the Akutagawa Prize, calling the current winners a "parade of rubbish". I couldn't find details what made Ishihara so offended. I'd like to know. According to another Mainichi story, the envelopes with black powder were sent by someone claiming to be from Sekihotai, an infamous right wing group responsible for the death of a reporter and threats against two former prime ministers because of changes made to textbooks and their depictions of Japanese troops atrocities in WWII. Did these two writers somehow "misrepresent" Japanese culture or history?

    obama-level fantasy. the term will enter the lexicon of u.s. politics

    Yes, I'm sure the term will be picked up and rehashed by right wing media pundits ad infinitum. It will join other ready-made pejorative cliches like 'drive-by media', 'elites', 'socialist', 'feminazi', 'death panels', 'man-child', and Obama 'hating America'. Are you people proud of yourselves for this type of discourse?
