When the DPJ first gained power, Tanigaki was the one most vociferously calling for the consumption tax to be raised. Now that the idea has become mainstream within the DPJ, he's against it. Obviously a man of principle, if we can say that saying no to everything is an admirable principle.

Well I'm sure the "country" can get over it soon when The Great Pudgy Successor proves to the world the glories of a system that employs nuclear blackmail and amphetamine production to keep its starved masses half alive because it can't manage to run a basic economy. Or perhaps when the whole world comes to respect a system that forces allegiance from birth to a privileged class of tyrants with stylish haircuts and gangster sunglasses. Then the planet will proclaim in tearful vibrato the heavenly majesty of the anointed fat boy.

It wouldn't be nonsense unless he were attempting to reclaim some sort of racial or ethnic privilege that much of middle America bemoans the loss of. Were he to acknowledge the progress northern Europe has made in terms of a life that is far more comfortable to a far wider range of ethnicities and races, Romney would not face criticism from any reasonable American, including those in your so-called hysterical mainstream lefty media.

Well, I'm sure Europe doesn't want to be like the wonderful state of Mississippi either. The fact is, most indexes measuring quality of life, economic dynamism, upward mobility, public safety, and political environment rate many (mostly northern) European countries above the United States. Americans need to swallow their pride a bit and face the fact that they can learn a thing or two from the Europeans. Europe may have overreached in some areas of government intervention, but they are being distorted by Romney as indicative of the failures of such a system in general.
But I guess beating your chest and wrapping yourself in the stars and stripes is a clever election technique.

Hard to fathom the misery and sadness that millions have endured for the sake of this sick and pointless system. Who benefits from this crap? Even the top tier in North Korea could live more comfortably in any given democratic state.
This is an evil ideology that has taken on a fearful life of its own.
I mourn the millions of good people who have lost their hopes, their joys, and their lives because of this silliness. Kim Jong Il is not among them.

In their methodology science and religion are absolutely incompatible. But to the extent that religion attempts to answer the 'why' questions of existence, yes, it explores areas that science does not. But this area is better suited to philosophy, which does not lay down fixed answers to these questions.

No, we won't. To assume that we will is wishful thinking.

@James Tanaka
OK, here are some evolutionary hypotheses that have been extensively put to the test, and survive:
1--from our biological forebears (not from clay)
2--via natural selection (not via hocus pocus)
3--when you die your life is finished or, if you get eaten by a shark, you enter the foodchain (not the afterlife)
Do you think that an ancient book written before anyone had a concept of science (and when people believed that the earth was flat, etc) holds more evidence than careful and methodological attempts to transcend superstition? Wishful thinking is no substitute for honest inquiry.
That being said, the main issue here is the rotten attitude of these so-called evangelists who hold up speakers with pre-recorded monotone dogma. Fear of hell and desire for heaven is not an admirable reason to believe a religion. If there were a God, I'm sure he would be able to see through this self-serving motivation. These people should also be ashamed of themselves for attempting to ensnare others into their miserable condition at a time when people should be feeling a heightened sense of love, selflessness, and kindred spirit. Yes, the materialism and shop-til-you-drop spirit of the Christmas holiday bothers me, but not as much as these BDL creeps.
Good on the monk. I don't share his belief, but he doesn't bother anyone.

Once again the robots from BDL (Bible Distribution League) Japan will be blaring out their message of eternal damnation for those who don't believe what they do. Thanks for the Christmas cheer.

When did I ever mention any of those people as positive role models? Go ahead and keep changing the topic.
My point was about the fetishization of underage girls (or girls who are made to look underage) as commodities. If you and LH10 think that's fine, both of you are sick.

No, some are just concerned about the societal impact of selling young girls as sex objects, and the mentality that believes whatever makes money is good.
You said it right there. Presenting young girls as pre-packaged objects of fetishized desire. And that you have no problem with that shows the deleterious effect of this "business model".
That's right. Don't think too much. Just give yourself over to whatever idiocy happens to be popular. Forget about the cultivation of substantive and thoughtful art or expression. And forget about whether the media machine is right or wrong. They're making money, and the girls are smiling. Hooray for popular!

Being a supporter of the war in Iraq did not make him a neocon, and Hitchens was himself quite adamant on this point.

@unreconstructed
As one who you might call a liberal, I share your sense of the loss of Christopher Hitchens. It is testament to the power of Hitchens' clarity and honesty in writing that serious people on both sides of the political spectrum have found common inspiration in him.

Enough already. Yesterday I had to keep my eyes closed on the Yamanote Line because the entire coach was festooned with AKB ads, everywhere. This has become a cult, zealously defended by its nerdy adherents. Just witness the accumulation of thumbs down for every criticism of this insipid fad.

Frankly, I'd rather see neither, if you're talking about a pop group whose trademark is prancing around in skimpy outfits. Yes, there are plenty of other atrocious examples of teens being presented as sex symbols. That doesn't diminish the sexual perversion that is at the heart of the AKB48 marketing scheme.

15 commercial contracts and a single? Doesn't this girl go to school? I'm sure her contractors and gangster production company have found a way to get around the child labor laws prohibiting individuals under age 18 from working long hours.
