    This girl is famous, so we had better have empathy with her personal life. After all, it is a marketed product.

    Some of the comments on the YouTube video are "Their dance is great!" "Only Nissin Food Holdings can make commercials which make me want to buy the products," "Cool!" and so on.

    Yeah! Cool! I want to follow commercials more and more from now on. I hope that someday all cultural activity will be centered around what is marketed by big and fun corporations!

    Yay for famous, popular, and cool!

    buy a ticket to a show or a ticket to leave Japan.

    i.e. any criticism of J-pop is not allowed because it is a sacred cultural product of the "exotic other"? If I were living in the US and thought Boys II Men were detrimental to society (which I don't), would I be required to shut up or get out? Is this North Korea?

    My criticism deals with a certain element of Japanese commercial culture that I find to be unhealthy for teenagers, socially challenged otaku, and the tenor of mass-marketed entertainment in this country. I am not taking down all of Japanese culture or even J-pop, as you seem to suggest. I have lived here for over 20 years, love many aspects of this country, and want the best for its people, including my family.

    If I am critical, that is my nature. I can dish it out to my own as well, including myself.

    If you disagree with my thoughts about AKB, you are most welcome to express so. My opinion should not make me a persona non grata.

    What's she going to do with the profits? If they're not donated, she's just making money off people's suffering.

    Good to see she had a mini live for school kids. That's nice.

    zichi speaks wisdom

    Seems to me, usually when you read one of these "to be decided next month" stories, it drags on forever until it evaporates. Relocation of Futenma. Signing of the Hague Treaty. Allowance of dual family names. Adapting daylight savings time. It's shorthand for some powerful drag pulling back from the boys upstairs, especially the boys who depend on a well-connected rural constituency.

    Let's see where this one goes. Hard to call.

    where you can see a smile on a kid's face

    by watching a pack of sluttily dressed teenagers prancing around, plus Kumi Koda. Family entertainment indeed. You'd bring your kid there? Your comment is condescending to the Vietnamese, who have a culture of their own which beats the pants off any of this commercial vulgarity.

    @Elbuda

    if it can make more $$$ for Japan sure, and if we can have better relations with the people of Vietnam

    Sorry, the people benefitting are the production companies and the top tier "artists". I understand that Japan has its own music, so don't play the cultural relativity card. Some J-pop is good, some is crap. My point is that Japan could promote friendship and commerce in in more positive ways than spreading slut-pop around Asia.

    Japan is in real trouble if it's government has to rely on the dumbest elements of its pop culture to sell Japan as a brand around the world.

    The ¥18.9 million isn't just for the value of the box. The price also includes a paid advertisement for the fetishization of conspicuous consumption. Leopard skin pill box hat, you fat cats?

    white's wanting to "feel good" for voting for him

    @realdoll--And we all know that any non-white only goes for the presidency out of an elite sense of snobbery, like they own the place, er . . . ah, anger at the white man . . . or, um, vicarious sublimated white guilt by a half black man . . . uh, no, determination to overthrow capitalism to enrich George Soros and other rich capitalists while redistributing wealth through big government intervention, and getting away with all this liberal jive just because he's colored. Whoodathunit realdoll.

    @Lieberman

    Did the president work that out himself or did it just pop up on the old tellyprompter? That's a dumb old cliche that suits you well, Lieberman. What in the world does this mythical "tellyprompter" have to do with Obama making what any normal brain would register as well-reasoned, modest, and constructive comments?

    and @yanee

    What a man! Glimmering in his power! Speaking the truth!

    Well, that's a dizzying example of a rightist's cynicism, when realistic and modest expression is taken as pompous self-glory. What would you have Obama say in this situation? Apologize for the whole mess? The economy would certainly be no better under a Republican, and you know it. Or did Obama just walk into Garden of Eden and spoil it with his lefty agenda?

    As for being "powerless"-- interesting comment from the side that simultaneously derides Obama for ramming his "socialist" agenda down our throats and secretly plotting a fascist/Muslim/communist/liberal humanist/elitist/statist takeover. Make up your minds.

    Why does Islam turn ordinary Americans against their own country?

    Ordinary? You've been ranting about how out of step this guy is with your ideal of white bread America. Your analysis is getting curiouser and curiouser.

    If you want to make a case that radical Islam is an attractive option for disturbed weirdos, I can entertain that possibility. But a dark-skinned man attending a prestigious university, smoking pot, playing in a rock band, and living with his parents hardly qualify as red flags.

    Anyway, they got him, so you can sleep a little easier tonight knowing that Obama's justice department is on the ball. G'night!

    bass4funk: Don't be so quick to stereotype liberals. I consider myself a liberal and don't see a problem with nailing this guy with a drone. And obviously neither does Obama, who ordered the hit and who is (according to descriptions by many on the right) an uber-liberal socialist who goes around the world apologizing for America's actions. Go figure.

    busted for running a red light and cops found 2 bags of weed in his car

    Sounds like a typical American university student. What are you getting at Lieberman? That the authorities should have seen this Muslim guy coming, never let him into college, and jailed him for life for exhibiting terrorist tendencies like smoking pot?

    This guy is an American citizen. Why are you so hung up on him having gone to university? He's a loony zealot who got nabbed for plotting terror. Affirmative action has nothing to do with it.

    Good. They can grow something else, like food or industrial-use hemp. Besides, these tobacco farmers should never have assumed it their god-given right to grow a plant that ends up killing millions.
