There's a much better article about this at stripes.com. JT won't let me post a direct link to it.

I really don't care about English. I wish they would start accepting credit cards.

I guess I'm the only who likes the instant search. It's faster and less clicking. All the other search engines will be copying it soon enough.

When I first saw Exile perform I thought it was a comedy skit. I was the only one in the room laughing.

No wonder the accident rates are high in Japan compared to so many other places.

Which major country has lower traffic accident rates than Japan? I always hear foreigners complain about the lousy driving in Japan so a few months ago I compared the car accident rates with my home country (America). The rates were lower in Japan. That didn't surprise me at all.

Just today I checked out the bicycle accident rates and in 2008 Japan only had one more bicycle fatality than America. Japan probably has at least 10+ times more regular cyclists than America. I would feel safer riding my bicycle in Japan without a helmet than in America with full body armor.

Before you guys believe all the road rules you read here, you should know that the rules differ from prefecture to prefecture. For example, in my prefecture it's OK to ride with earphones on but it's not OK in Tokyo.

The New Skyliner is priced at 2400yen. The JR Narita Express is priced at 3500yen.

Nippori > Narita on New Skyliner = ¥2,400/36 mins.

    "Old" skyliner = ¥1,920/56 mins.

    Keisei Limited = ¥1,000/70 mins.

I'm usually not in a hurry so the extra 34 mins is no problem for me.

It'll get me to the airport 30 mins faster for more than double the current cost. No thanks.

The iPhone 4 reception problem is a problem with the phone itself. It has nothing to do with the carriers. Basically, if you hold the phone with your left hand the signal bars drops from 4 to 1 or even zero. Apple's answer to the problem is to hold the phone in your right hand or buy their case, which is supposed to alleviate the problem. Unbelievable.

U.S. institutions which have forced overseas Americans to close their accounts include Ameriprise, Bank of America, Citibank, E-Trade, Fidelity, INGDirect, JPMorganChase, Morgan Stanley, Smith Barney, T.Rowe Price, Vanguard, Wachovia, Washington Mutual and Wells Fargo.

Has anybody here actually had their bank accounts closed because you live in Japan? It's the first I've heard of this. I'm glad I bank with HSBC.

in the U.S., where people are encouraged to be outgoing, the birthrate is high and the suicide rate low

Some interesting stats between Japan and US:

-Japan's suicide rate among the under-24 year-olds is 40% lower than the US

-the rates are about the same between 25 to 44 year olds

-Japan's rates are about double the US's among the middle-aged and elderly

I'm not sure I like the US's stats better than Japan's.

    SpanishEyez,

I have never heard/read about anyone getting denied a Japanese spouse visa before. Have you seen with your own eyes a copy of your husband's family register (koseki)? Are you listed on there as his wife?

I know a woman who was an illegal alien but married a Japanese man and was granted a spouse visa. I think your case is very unusual.

If you are after a much cheaper alternative to the iPhone in Japan certainly have a look at the HT-03a.

How much did you pay up front for the HT-03a? And how much are you paying monthly for the phone, if any? I'm thinking of switching to Docomo when they get the Sharp Android and I'm trying to get an idea of docomo's costs.
