In the beginning nobody could get close enough to know anything. This was a risk management assumption. If he had been right, he'd be a hero. I would rather hear worst case scenario in a crisis versus the Japanese media who were spoon fed denial claims from the Japanese gov't. Because the Japanese got it all wrong too.

If for example a person wanted to bring small children to Fukushima - I would probably not encourage that. However, Tokyo is fine. Just stay away from certain foods that are possibly contaminated, just like in other countries.
Posted in: If someone you know was wondering whether or not to visit Japan in the near future, but was worried about the nuclear crisis, would you encourage them to come?

They are not coming because they want to make a statement IMO. There is enough independent data to show that Tokyo's environment is now fine. Or maybe they are just really naive. Either way, it's the price Japan is paying for the genpatsu disaster.

Unlike Western prisons, in Japan, prisons are not full of gay gang rapists.
Horiemon will be fine. Time will go fast. Once he's out, this whole thing will be behind him. He will help contribute to Japan's long needed change - even if he leaves Japan.

I expect it will not be anything close to the creativity of SNL. Just goof-ball scripted Japanese celebrities who are over-used already.

All his politician critics just want a chance to hold the king position of PM for a while. Of course the PM should be at the G8. he should also show leadership but that is too much to ask for any politician who arrived in their position of power due to family circumstances not their own merit.
Posted in: Prime Minister Naoto Kan continues to be criticized by members of his own party and the opposition, as well as business groups for his lack of leadership during the current crisis. What more could he have done and what should he be doing? For example, should he be out of the country now, attending the G-8 summit?

Yes, Kan should be in Europe now. Yes, Kan should be smiling now.
Country leaders have to handle multiple tasks. That is their job. They also need to show confidence. Kan is a pretty lousy leader but he's the best the Japanese politics can offer. He's no different than the other rich old guys who arrived in their positions of power through circumstance rather than through demonstrating any skill.

If the mess will result in two quarters of failing to meet their numbers, they need to leave. The shareholders and stakeholders expect it.
In TEPCO's case, the figure head's departure might not result in needed reform.

The price Japan is paying for the nuke disaster. The tourism czars sells Japan's beauty but until the health officials disclose regularly HOW they are testing foods for radiation and allow independent oversight, it's a tough sell.
Besides tourists, Japan officials need to figure out how to retain the smart resident foreigners. Many are finalizing their exit strategy.
Posted in: Why do tourists continue to stay away from Japan, despite the fact that there are many places of interest far away from the crisis-affected areas? What should Japanese tourism officials do to promote Japan as a safe destination?
