when??? what??? Were the Beatles responsible for stressing adolescents? Maybe I misread you here, but I am sure they were not. Don't know about you, but I experienced the era as a teenager to the fullest. If anything the Beatles and the myriads of pop groups of the time un-stressed young people and stressed the older generation.
Facebook is an entirely different phenomenon. People get sucked into a virtual world of nothingness called 'friends'. Connecting with (real) friends and family, sharing pictures and exchanging ideas can be done through regular email.
Providing the opportunity to everyone to build and function in a fantasy world with a computer portal has hidden dangers. People unlearn how to deal with real people in real situations. And this risk is all the greater to adolescents who fail experience in the real world. Those who are denied this experience because for example both parents have full time jobs, the family do not interact, everyone leads his separate life in his separate space at different times.
Excuse me, what is the cure?

Under the circumstances panic in Nevada and panic in Osaka seem to be events in two different worlds, of vastly different magnitude.
So Hartwell found some elevated level of radiation. He has no doubt, being infallible, it originated in Japan. Good for him. Nice for his statistics. For the rest irrelevant.

Agreed.

I hope this sets an example to follow.
Not meaning to criticize anyone here, I quote a proverb:
He who gives little gives from his heart; he who gives much gives from his wealth.

Excellent suggestion. If people actually did this the country would be back on its feet quickly. As I am on a pension I can't afford more than 1.25%.

This is almost a miracle. Even when rescuers are beginning to or already have given up hope, there still is life among the rubble.
Slightly OT, but so do I and I make it myself.

Zenny, thank you. But I've been there and there is nothing in the price range suggested in this news item! I guess it should be 130,000 yen.

Yes, they have been around, in very small numbers for very large prices. Having lived in Japan for more than 4 decades I'm aware of that, thank you.
I see used machines selling for 30,000 to 80,000 yen, so if the quoted price of 30,000 for a NEW machine, washer/dryer is correct, that would indicate a revolution. If you can point me to a seller on line I'd appreciate it. I bet you can't.

Finally Japanese makers are embarking on front loaders. The type of washers that have been around in huge numbers in Europe for more than half a century. I can't believe the price listed here however. That must be an error. 30,000 yen for a washer/dryer? No way.

I doubt that. The distribution problem is an excuse for a decision not to show movies that may shock a segment of the population, creating negative publicity.

Tut-tut. Big words. Hugely inflated. Maybe I haven't been in Japan as long as you have - only 40 some years. I can't vouch for Tokyo, really. But my experiences in western Japan are very favorable. Drivers are courteous, they generally know the way. If they didn't they had their radio and now navigation. They ask which route I wish to take if there are different ways. They put the heavy cases in the trunk. They switch on the meter AFTER driving off and switch it off BEFORE stopping the vehicle.
I just thought I had to say something in defense of the taxi driver after reading all these hugely exaggerated, venomous comments.

some people have a sick sense of humor or a twisted sense of freedom.
Posted in: Does freedom of speech include the right to yell "Fire!" in a crowded theater, yell "Shark" at a beach or joke about having a bomb on a plane, for example?
