South Korea? Really? South Korea is known for having extremely high quality counterfeit handbags.

Try to bring one into Japan, it'll be confiscated and forget about the 'extremely high quality'.

A revolutionary and somewhat radical measure, tobacco vending machines having been around for as long as I can remember: more than 60 years! But all for the good (meaning becoming illegal). Of course one can never completely eradicate smoking by youngsters, that is not the target. The target is to make it as difficult as possible. And now it's all about enforcing the law.

Japan has a thing with vending machines. They are omnipresent and include the cigarette machines. Smith is a little pessimistic about them being phased out. I bet on 10 years!

Kikuchi was quoted as telling police that he was drunk and doesn’t remember anything

A totally meaningless and worthless excuse. The evidence of what he did is there and alcohol does not condone his actions, on the contrary, it aggravates his despicable behavior.

counterfiting is a big part of the chinese tradition thats why they won't sign it

Probably true. The Chinese government may realize that counterfeiting should be eradicated but it will have a huge problem trying to convince the nation. I hear from my acquaintances who visit China regularly that people are surprised when the subject comes up. They don't seem to comprehend the concept of patents and copyright.

this is because a virus can change over time

Uhuh. Whooping cough is a bacterial disease though. But sure, bacteria mutate like viruses. In my youth there were no fancy vaccines that enriched pharmaceutical companies. My siblings and I - and there were four of us - had to fight off the disease by ourselves.

West and Japan started to implode after they were already rich, not during their industrial development...

What do they say about comparing apples to oranges again? Try comparing a totally corrupt [pseudo] communist country economy to free open market economies in democratic nations. Good luck with that.

In addition, rather than increasing income tax, I would say that they should increase sales tax instead. If they raised it by 2.5% to 7.5% it would still be one of the lowest in the developed world and get you a 50% increase in sales tax revenue...

The pros and cons of raising the sales tax is a topic that of course has its proponents and opponents. It has been discussed and commented upon here many times. Some points to consider: 1) a raise across the board is unwise and unfair because the lower income brackets will be disadvantaged. 2) food and daily necessities when targeted by higher taxes force people to buy more junk food, creating a higher burden on health care and/or may be the trigger for people to edge closer to the poverty line 3) Japan having one of the lowest sales taxes in the 'developed world' is a fuzzy, rather meaningless statement as e.g. food prices and cost of distribution vary greatly from country to country and what counts is the price for the consumer, not a mere percentage. 4) (re)instating a luxury tax should be considered for high end, high performance vehicles, like certain SUVs and luxury cars, and large screen audio and tv systems. 5) high speed rail fares could be reduced to create an incentive for more people to travel and help stimulate the economy

I am sure other posters can come up with more and better ideas than the politicians who can't look beyond the length of their noses.

The man-made global warming theory has been discredited ad infinitum. The Earth's climate always goes in cycles, years of warming and years of cooling. Most of North America used to be covered by glaciers but natural warming melted those away. We're simply in another warming cycle.

Leading scientists, including Nobel Prize winners, have been leaving the IPCC in droves in disgust of the politically motivated tactics used by the elite UN organization.

It's clear which side of the fence you are. Not on the side of the 98% of the scientists who have explained what's been happening. The United States still the big nay-sayer? Is it an allergy? How about the difference of opinion between republicans ans democrats? Hmmm, intelligence and greed gap? Ostrich syndrome with the former?

You people have to get a little smarter and learn what is really going on with this stuff.

Do I detect a trace of arrogance? Why don't you amuse 'us' and educate the 'you people'?

In my book attacking, torturing and killing defenseless creatures, whether they are women, children, the weak or animals constitute and act of cowardice. There is nothing heroic about it. But here you can see that tradition and cultural heritage can shape a nation's identity. It does not rhyme with the love and care [Spanish] people bestow on their pet dogs, cats, etc. This irrationality with a medieval tint is now being corrected.

“I will continue my political activity and keep fighting in court,” Ishikawa said, adding that he feared the conviction would affect Ozawa politically.

He's been convicted and so now we'll have another criminal in parliament. 'Feared the conviction would affect Ozawa' - I certainly hope it does.

Ozawa is too big a fish to do time

Big slippery slimy eel is what I had in mind!

Let's face it. China is now 'the new world'. Japan and other advanced nations will hand over their technology to make a few quick bucks today and to go bankrupt in a couple of years.

The target of these traffic safety campaign should not just be the reduction of fatalities in traffic. It should be about making everyone feel safer in the roads. Meaning eliminating the hardcore who ignore the rules. Those who drive too fast, especially on narrow roads without sidewalks where people walk, bike and sundry. Those who don't signal or do so after the fact (standard these days it seems and irritates me tremendously). Drivers who make a right turn just in front of you. The tailgaters. The cell phone freaks who hold them against their ears, or what is left of them, driving, talking, smoking and going into a turn at the same time. The shaver and bottled drink within reach, not mentioning the manga, loud boom-boom and navigation with TV. Kids roaming freely around inside the vehicle and mom wearing seat belt. I guess the list is endless. I've been driving in this wonderful country for more than 40 years and I know fatalities were very high in the 60s and 70s. One way to reduce those numbers was to install a traffic light, out of sync with others, at every intersection, but driving manners haven't improved the tiniest bit. Education does not stretch so far, it seems. Nor does the budget for real traffic safety: increasing the chances to catch offenders, i.e. having more police officers out there in the traffic jungle and not the ones who write out parking tickets or those who hide from view with a radar gun to trap drivers who go a little too fast. In a way I do feel sorry for the police officers who are faced with the overpowering mass of offenders. They'd rather look the other way - I guess - than e.g. trying to book a stupid cyclist, who count in the millions, for whom no rules exist - anymore. Sorry for this rant.

Who on this forum was asserting Mahmoud is telling the truth? Have your heads examined. This man is the great manipulator of truth. The truth applies only to his convenience. A "leader" of a country, a regime, guilty of the same offenses he accuses the United States in particular of. Did he use the word 'arrogant powers'? This guy IS obnoxious. I'm sure he knows it but he also knows many people, like the ones who post here in his favor, fall for it.

Actually I feel kind of sorry for the traffic cops as they have totally lost control over a population of millions of cyclists and scooter riders who ignore just about any traffic rule. The police would have to recruit a similar number of officers to put a stop to the lawlessness. It will never happen. Japan, a developed country, but also still an Asian country.

Their middle classes are mushrooming and urbanizing the rural people with modernized infrastructure.

I don't doubt it. At the same time the country is saddled with a huge population that is left behind. Right, he rural people. The gap between this segment and the 'middle classes' is growing too quickly and the discontent of these grumbling masses will create a huge problem for China in the next decade.
