I have suggested this way back: Every newly built detached or semi-detached house ought to be constructed to last for a minimum of 30 years and be equipped with solar PV panels and proper thermal insulation. In only a decade or two this will make a huge difference.

The dutch have being trying to be wind energy sufficient for 40 odd years and are only at 40% with hundreds of turbines scattered in the countryside and in the ocean.

Your figures are way off. There are close to 2000 wind machines installed, providing about 5% of total electricity produced.

The 6x2 turbines Japan is considering constructing is a very tiny small beginning.

Give me the electromechanical machines of the 1960s! These machines were often found in large, carpeted restaurants. Places where a little quiet was appreciated. The machines were placed at the far end of the room and they did not beep, play noisy tunes, etc. It was a real thrill when you had lined up 5 balls and the machine started counting out your takings. The machine took dimes, not quarters.

It will come crashing in 5-10 years

That's the reason for the rush.

Tanigaki is just full of hot air

The more I hear and see him blowing out this hot air, the more I detest this man. This same man who likes to point out what the 'kokumin no minasama' need, want, while at the same time totally disregarding his and his party's responsibility to make that happen. And also totally disregarding the fact, like many have already pointed out, that it is the LDP who were in power for more than half a century and created the Japan the DPJ inherited. Stating that it is the bureaucrats who 'did it' is a real dumb remark. And by the way, Tanigaki is not only full of hot air, he is also full of himself and full of . . .

I've no doubt this has been said, but the list of people who have made gaffes or irresponsible remarks in or under LDP leadership goes above and beyond that made by the LDP.

    Huh?

VW is obviously not Suzuki's dependent subordinate

Nor is it the other way round.

Williams said to the chair ump."I hate you" Funny that.

She said a lot more than that, but you can find that in other news sources.

Congrats to Sam. Her winning was completely deserved and it is a memorable event for herself and Australian tennis.

all he had to do was invite others to visit and tell him he's wrong, show a little backbone. Instead the LDP probably received a bonus fee from the nuclear industry by now

So true. Have the opposition heroes who know it all tell him to his face what they thought of him instead of talking to cameras. What cowards. How unlike Japanese tradition, Japanese honor, how disappointing. The shame and blame is on the opposition who clearly are more focused on a rift between parties than on rebuilding a troubled nation.

And Russia says: what do we get in return.

And Japan says: there might be something you won't get in return. How about: Trade, Trust, Technology.

Russia may be big and almost bursting at its seams. But history has taught that these nations unable to contain themselves will eventually fail to achieve their aggressive goals.

Hachiro’s remark and apparent joking about radiation were widely seen as insensitive and immediately prompted opposition parties to demand Noda dismiss him.

The only insensitivity I can see is the reaction of the opposition. Oh, yeah, I forgot , they are supposed to oppose and not do anything to govern this nation and help those in need of help. My bad.

This is just above and beyond stupid, and now it's only 8 days and we're back to the same silly circus.

That is a quote. And I said in my post that 'mysteriously' disappeared - which angered me too, that I agreed. The man did not have to resign.

You know the capabilities of the electric vehicle and you know what you need, which makes the choice between an EV, a diesel or a different IC vehicle easy. For the time being stick to fuel efficient IC vehicles if you need to drive long distances daily. Invest in an EV if you mostly drive less than the range of it in urban areas and you care about the environment and the world you leave for the children you created. Continuing to harp on the EVs and what according to you they can or cannot do is meaningless in the light of how technology has advanced since the birth of the first powered vehicle.

The pension system has reached a crunch, not because the people who have paid in so far don't deserve what they were promised, but because the money paid in was mishandled. It doesn't take a genius to realise that when the boomers started hitting retirement age, the demand for pensions would go up; but before that those boomers were paying in huge amounts of money, far more than was needed to pay out pensions for the boomers' parents. But instead of investing the extra or even putting it by for when it would inevitably be needed, the geniuses in charge of national finance used it to build useless, expensive concrete boxes and white elephants.

Exactly. A clear example of the incompetence and indifference of those doing their 9 to 5 jobs in the lower echelons as well as those supervising them in their untouchable heavens or havens.

I detest these dumb polls. They do not represent the Japanese public. And even if they did the public does not get to decide on international treaties. Some tribes have chosen to live the same life styles for thousands of years. Like those who hunt for protein food on islands in the Pacific the same way their ancestors did more than a thousand years ago. They don't use modern weapons, they hunt only in certain seasons, they catch only what they really need. The species are sustained. There is no need for 'scientific research'. They know more about nature and science than the greedy ones. The Japanese public really has no clue about the need to protect the whale.
